A Hospital in Another World?-Chapter 790: Half a Mage Tower? Or a Bed of Gold Coins?
Transform the [Direct Current Defibrillation, Electric Cardioversion] spell into a magic item?
Garrett smiled, a broad, genuine smile. Wasn’t this the same idea as a defibrillator? A simplified version would be an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), usable by non-professionals.
"This is great news!" he replied with a smile.
"Such a device could be placed in public spaces for emergency use. Although the initial cost might be high, and the council’s public finances might not cover it... Hmm..."
He pondered for a moment.
"But it could be first equipped in city halls, high-end hotels, opera houses, and so on? Have those establishments bear the cost?"
"That’s a good idea!" Old Sam’s eyes lit up.
"According to your paper, wealthy people are more likely to have high blood pressure and cholesterol, making them prone to heart issues. Having a magic device for resuscitation could save lives—even as a selling point, the owners would be willing to buy it."
"I think they would too—although, it would be better if it became a trend. That way, the wealthy would be more willing to pay a high price," Garrett nodded seriously.
In a society that loves new and rare items, what might they do?
Garrett knew all too well. X-ray machines in shoe stores, X-ray machines in photo studios, radium toothpaste, radium cosmetics, the [Electronic and Silicon] shoelace company, magnetized water, eating mung beans to cure all diseases...
Comparatively, AEDs could at least save lives!
While AEDs can handle only a few situations, in most cases, patients still need to be taken to a hospital quickly. However, in cases of atrial or ventricular fibrillation, immediate resuscitation within the golden three-minute window is critical!
Of course, using a magic AED as an electric claw is out of the question. If it doesn’t match the conditions for defibrillation/cardioversion, the electric claw won’t activate—this is written into the magical configuration.
"If it can be done, it would be great and could save many lives," Garrett leaned forward, his tone becoming unconsciously eager.
"However, this spell is still not perfect and requires a lot of data support. Even if it becomes widespread, many situations may still not be salvageable. This point needs to be widely publicized to prevent users from blaming the council..."
Muttering to himself...
The popularization of AEDs took a long process, and no one would trouble the hospital if a patient couldn’t be saved.
But a magical device? Ordinary people’s trust in magic might be limitless. If they found it didn’t work, it could damage the council’s reputation...
Moreover, AEDs need to be used with chest compressions. How to promote chest compression training... Perhaps it should start in military camps. The CPR training led by the War God Temple had good results...
Garrett discussed the usage of the magical device enthusiastically with Old Sam, not mentioning the authorization fee. Archmage Carlisle also chimed in, occasionally glancing at Bishop Seiren:
So, what are you here for?
Don’t think we don’t know!
Don’t think Garrett, being young and soft-hearted, eager to promote medical solutions, would let you get the authorization cheaply! We, his senior brothers and sisters, and the Magic Council are all watching!
Bishop Seiren became increasingly anxious under Carlisle’s gaze. His hands, hidden under the table, clenched into fists.
If it weren’t for the table’s edge not having a hanging cloth, the cloth might have been torn to shreds by now.
He genuinely wanted to maintain some dignity and the War God Temple’s face. After the two Archmages left, he would formally make the request to Mage Nordmark—
But if the magical device was already made and distributed, what would be the temple’s role?
When the temple claims it as the War God’s gift, people might just say, "Oh, I’ll just borrow a magical device, it works the same," undermining the War God’s authority.
He coughed loudly, interrupting the mages’ discussion, and bowed respectfully to Garrett:
"Mage Nordmark, I am here on behalf of the War God Temple to make a request. Please visit the temple to teach the bishops about the [Direct Current Defibrillation, Electric Cardioversion] spell and authorize the temple to adapt it into a divine spell."
This... is possible!
Garrett was nodding at the first request. Halfway through, he turned abruptly to Archmage Carlisle—
He almost twisted his neck.
Archmage Carlisle smirked inwardly. Just what he was waiting for, bringing the temple in would help raise the price—he said seriously:
"The council and the War God Temple have long had good relations. These things can be discussed. So, what compensation does the temple propose?"
You speak for him?
Bishop Seiren protested silently with his eyes. Archmage Carlisle smiled faintly:
"Garrett is young and inexperienced. As his senior brother, I must look out for him—otherwise, our teacher would blame me for not taking care of my junior brother."
Bishop Seiren stiffened. He turned his head inch by inch to look at Garrett, then back to Carlisle:
Young?
Inexperienced?
He’s already twenty—twenty-something for sure, well into adulthood by any standard!
Inexperienced? He already owns an independent high-level mage tower and a hospital!
He’s also overseen Nevis’s public health system!
He founded and managed an infectious disease hospital from scratch!
Young and inexperienced, you dare say that!
Garrett rubbed his neck to relax his muscles, then exchanged a glance with Carlisle and turned to Bishop Seiren:
"The temple’s invitation is an honor for me. However," he smiled apologetically:
"I have no experience in converting magic to divine spells, and I would need the temple’s masters to guide me."
Bishop Seiren sighed in relief. Mage Nordmark was willing to talk, and that was good. As for the compensation...
Without waiting for a question, he sincerely offered:
"You may name your terms. As long as the temple can manage, we will do our best to meet them."
"So generous?"
Old Sam chimed in with a sly smile. He glanced quickly at Garrett, leaned back, and stared at Bishop Seiren:
"Calling a mage’s work the War God’s gift... Tsk tsk, that hush money won’t be cheap..."
"Of course, of course. The War God Temple is very sincere in this matter." Bishop Seiren cursed inwardly but smiled outwardly. Old fox! Weren’t you hinting to Mage Nordmark to ask for a high price!
If not for the fear of affecting cooperation, he’d love to punch that guy’s face. To remind them that every War God’s priest is a powerful warrior!
Then he saw Garrett muttering, looking troubled as if calculating something. Bishop Seiren couldn’t read lips but saw his frown deepen.
A huge number?
Can the temple afford it?
If it required directly contacting the main temple for a large sum, the next few years would be tough for everyone? Promotions, transfers, and resources would be affected?
Bishop Seiren was anxious. Across from him, Garrett nodded apologetically and stood up:
"Excuse me, may I step out for a moment?—Senior Brother?"
Are they going to discuss it privately? Well, the temple is sure to be cut... Bishop Seiren sighed: Can I refuse?
Coming to ask for help!
As long as it’s not beyond the temple’s capacity, I must agree!
The two mages left, leaving Old Sam and Bishop Seiren staring at each other, smiling without warmth. Garrett pulled Archmage Carlisle into another room and, after closing the door, eagerly asked:
"Senior Brother, how much should I ask for?"
"How much do you want?" Archmage Carlisle asked. "Or is there something you want them to buy for you?"
Garrett had little desire for gold coins, as long as he could support his people, he was content. But the things he wanted...
"I... I’d like another mage tower, next to the hospital. I already have a tower spirit, and its debt is paid off. If they can cover the rest, would that be suitable?"
"They can definitely afford it," Archmage Carlisle affirmed without hesitation. The War God Temple could easily build half a basic mage tower.
A basic mage tower starts at 50,000 contribution points, with the tower spirit costing 20,000. The remaining 30,000 points, equivalent to 120,000 gold coins, for buying out this magic wasn’t expensive.
The temple teaching all their bishops this magic spell would be a considerable number!
But was it suitable... Archmage Carlisle thought Garrett could ask for more...
"Just this? Anything else?"
Garrett looked increasingly embarrassed. Archmage Carlisle urged again, and he finally stammered: 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
"I actually... I can save up for a mage tower, but I want to get a gold coin bed for Cirella..."
Cirella had been asleep for over half a year and was about to wake up. When she did, having no bed would be too much of an injustice!
Archmage Carlisle took a silent deep breath.
