A Life Once More-Chapter 67: A Night Behind Bars (Strangely not Bad)
Chapter 67 - 67: A Night Behind Bars (Strangely not Bad)
"Come here often?"
"No. Not really."
I was put behind bars relatively quicker than I thought. The station was only a 10-minute drive from that restaurant. The guy to my left seemed to be in a similar situation to myself. He had short green hair, green eyes kind of similar to Ophi's, but his were sharper. As for his build, let's say he's on the fatter side, but not too far gone.
His skin was a similar tan to the big officer from before. His face had that tired-but-friendly look, like someone used to being around chaos but never being the cause of it.
"Hey."
"Hm?"
This dude seemed to be the talking type, which was fine with me. His talkative nature made me feel less awkward about the situation.
"You're Eizkel Rhyse, right?"
"Y-Yeah."
"Haha~, well man, what's an actor like you doing here?"
"Some dude tried getting too close to my mom."
"Seraphina Rhyse? Damn, is he retarded?"
"Ha. No kidding."
'Speaking of, I feel kind of bad for Jack. He's probably waiting at the hotel room.' I had completely forgotten about Mom's one trusted aide. If anything, he would probably be the one to come save me.

"Really?! Sweet! See ya, Eizkel my man!"
"S-See you."
'So his name is Marik. Ezryn, keep that noted.'
[Totally...]
I didn't like that tone but whatever. I slumped down in the cell, staring at the ceiling with incredible boredom. I wasn't cuffed anymore, so it wasn't like I was stuck to one place.
The cell was cold but bearable. The walls looked older than I expected; The lobby looked brand new and redone but these cell walls had small hairline cracks ran through the paint.
[Why not work out?]
Hearing Ezryn's words, I got straight to work. I started with push-ups while conversing with my closest friend.
'How's life been, bro?'
[Can't you try better?]
'I'm just checking on you!'
[Hah~ Well, life's good, just watching my favorite drama although I skip the cringy parts.]
'Seriously? What drama?' I knew he could watch things from my vision, but I don't remember watching any dra—
'Die.'
[Bahahaha~]
Our talk ended just as quick as it started, so I put my focus on my body. I easily pushed past the 80th push-up, the 90th was harder, and getting to 100 was agonizing. My arms felt super weak and I doubted if I could really get the last one.
"99... PHUUUUUU 100!!!!!!"
I plopped right down to the ground. My arms wouldn't allow me to pick myself up and honestly, the ground wasn't so bad. It was cooler than the bench. I waited a few minutes and used the little bit of strength recovered to get ready to do sit-ups, which I did with ease all the way to 100 but like before, the next 20 were hell, and I felt my core hating every single movement.
At least I was sore for a reason and not just sitting in here like a lifeless blob. Small wins.
Falling back down —onto the ground this time— I was back to staring at the ceiling instead of the floor. I didn't know how much time had passed, but I felt that this isolation was quite nice considering the place.
"What are you doing?"
'That voice.'
I looked back as best I could, even lifting my head a bit.
"Hey there, Mom!"
"They said you'll be free in the morning."
"So simple?"
I blinked, wondering if the universe just decided to give me a freebie today.
"Hehe~ Thank your awesome mother!" She flashed a peace sign through the bars, like she was the star of some bizarre prison-themed anime.
"Ahh~ My cool, awesome, sweet, beautiful mom, thank you!" I sang dramatically, throwing both arms toward the ceiling like I was praising a merciful god who just so happened to be my mother.
"G-Okay, never mind. That felt weird even for me," she said, literally shivering from the cringe.
"Haha~"
Her red eyes stared at me through the thick metal bars, glinting under the flickering fluorescent lights that buzzed like lazy bees overhead. I thought everything was handled and she was about to leave, but she stayed right there, arms crossed, foot tapping against the floor.
"But Eiz, for real, what are you doing?" she asked, her voice echoing faintly off the cold, slightly damp concrete walls.
"I just finished doing sit-ups."
"Phew~ I thought you were already losing it."
"Oh! Can you text Kate for me?"
"Already did it~ She called you a heroic dumbass," she chimed, flashing her phone screen at me with a victorious wiggle of her fingers. I saw the messages and Kate's aggravation. I would have an earful to hear but who knows she might let me off!
"Heroic is a bit wrong!"
"But you know that you're a dumbass?" She smiled wryly.
"A strong man knows his flaws." I brought my sore arm up and patted my chest. I put on the best smug smile I could manage learning a thing or two from my lovely girlfriend.
With that, she just shook her head and left me to my lonesome. Well, kind of lonesome but if I told anyone about Ezryn, I'd look crazy.
[I think you are crazy already!]
'Well, think what you want. I can't lie though, this kind of sucks.' After Mom left and I was really left alone, the boredom was killing me. Falling asleep wouldn't help either, I tried but it wouldn't happen. Before I knew it, staring at the ceiling had become what I did for who knows how long. I just stared and thought, stared and thought... did I mention staring and thinking?
[You did.]
Ezryn at least kept my mind warm, which was nice. He didn't let me completely succumb to boredom, but he definitely had his little fun with this. I guess he wanted to get back at me for all the time I spent with Kate. Yeah, that's probably it! He just missed me.
[Now you're really going crazy, jeez.]
