Chapter 70: Join us

The next few days, the Bloodfang pack was in chaos.

The party was scheduled to be aligned to the moon... since the moon decided to rise late, it got postponed by a day.

But that did not deter anybody’s spirit. Servants darted between the grand halls, draping more silks and hanging more lanterns. The scent of roasted meat and spiced wine filled the air all throughout the day, even though the party wasn’t until tomorrow.

Wolves laughed, argued, and occasionally brawled over decorations...because nothing said "festive" like a bloody nose before the guests even arrived.

Autumn leaned against the balcony railing, watching the spectacle below with detached amusement.

A line of women...some wolves, some humans, some nymphs and even a few witches...stood near the main courtyard. It seemed like they were rehearsing their posts at the gate. To welcome guests, Autumn presumed.

Their outfits left little to the imagination. Plunging necklines, thigh high slits, and shimmering fabrics that clung like second skins. Their makeup was bold, lips painted dark as wine, eyes lined with darkest kohl.

They were literally offering themselves like desserts on a platter. The thought made Autumn curl her lips.

She turned away. Not her problem. Not her world.

She was only there for a few days... to get back her strength. And then she would be gone. Somewhere far... very far away.

Then came the knock.

Three sharp raps, followed by an overly cheerful, "Autumn! Darling! Open up!"

She sighed. Velor’s wives.

The door burst open before she could answer, and in they swept...Niva, Serra, and Mara...like a hurricane of silk, perfume, and relentless energy. Too much energy actually!

Niva held up a bundle of fabric. "We come bearing gifts!"

Serra twirled. "And wisdom!"

The Bloodfang pack had a reputation...Autumn knew that well. It was not just for being fearsome warriors, but for hosting the kind of parties that made the Moon Goddess avert her gaze.

Those women were not pack warriors or staff welcoming guests. They were playthings, draped in perfume and pearls, presented like trophies to charm Alpha guests into alliances or obedience.

Autumn cringed. Her stomach curled at the thought of being anywhere near that madness.

"Look at her!" Serra gasped. "Still in those drab clothes? Absolutely criminal."

"She is sulking again," Mara pouted. "I told you she would be."

Niva crossed her arms with the elegance of a queen and gave Autumn a once over. "We need to talk."

"About? The sex party? "

"Oops! I know it sounds that way! But here we have a different name for it. They are bloodline bait. Walking incentives. They will dance, flirt, and do... well, things that make Luna’s blush."

Autumn’s eye twitched. "Sounds charming."

Niva grinned. "It is a strategy darling. We don’t do war if we can avert it. We do seduction diplomacy."

Serra added, "Half the alliances Velor ever made were sealed somewhere between the wine table and the guest bedroom."

"I don’t need to know that," Autumn said, rubbing her temples.

Mara leaned forward. "You ever worn thigh chains made of silver and pearls?"

"No!" Came the sharp reply. " Don’t intend to either! "

"We should try it on her!" Serra clapped, completely ignoring her. "Velor likes the fierce ones. But imagine if we..."

"I am not going," Autumn cut in sharply. "I don’t want to meet Alphas. I don’t want to dance. Leave me alone please! I am sorry. I don’t want to spoil your fun but I am not in the..."

" Oh! Did we mention, it was going to be a masquerade party??? "

" Sexy, ain’t it? " Mara, grinned. "And wine!" She wiggled a bottle.

Autumn blinked. "I said I don’t want it."

Niva waved a hand. "Technicalities." She dumped the bundle onto Autumn’s bed...and the dress, deep red and scandalously low cut. "You are coming to the party as long as you are in this pack. Rules..."

"No, I am not."

Niva raised a brow. "Well, excuse us for trying to help. You have been moping on that balcony for a week like a ghost!Don’t play so hard to please...come on, Autumn!"

" You don’t understand what I am going through!" Autumn was on the verge of slamming their thick heads together. She knew they meant good... but she wasn’t in the mental state to accept their gesture.

Serra gasped. "But it is the event of the season! Alphas, Lunas, warriors, even rogues are invited from all across the plane...everyone who is anyone will be there!"

"And everyone who is no one," Mara added helpfully.

Autumn crossed her arms. "Still not interested."

Niva tsked. "You have been sulking in this tower for days. It is unhealthy. For you and for the pups!"

A pause!

"I am not sulking. I am trying to exist." Autumn narrowed her eyes. "I am not moping either. You won’t understand."

"You are brooding," Serra corrected. "That’s the difference right? Brooding is hotter." She winked.

Autumn’s mouth opened and shut. Were they too thick to take a hint or were they doing this to deliberately bully her into submission?!

Mara plopped onto Autumn’s bed, bouncing slightly. "Look, we get it.Tragically beautiful with your sad, chopped off hair..."

Autumn’s glare could have melted steel.

"...but," Mara hurried on, "this party isn’t just drinking and flirting. Well, it’s mostly drinking and flirting. But there is also alliances being made, secrets being spilled, and..."

The three wives exchanged glances!

"...people getting stabbed in dark corners," Niva finished cheerfully.

Autumn raised a brow. "That is your idea of a selling point?"

Serra leaned in, lowering her voice. "Rumor has it Alpha Kieran’s envoys will be here."

A muscle twitched in Autumn’s jaw.

Niva smirked. "Ah. Now she is listening."

Autumn turned back to the balcony, her grip tightening on the railing. "I don’t care about Kieran or his men."

"Really? Your eyes say otherwise!" Mara sang.

Serra draped an arm over Autumn’s shoulders. "Sweetheart, if you don’t show up, you will spend the night wondering what is happening. And we will spend the night worrying about you. And Velor will spend the night drunk and trying to seduce someone inappropriate. It is a lose lose. We don’t want that."

Autumn snorted. "Sounds like a normal night for Velor."

Niva grinned. "Exactly. So why not come? If you hate it, you can leave. But at least you will know."

Autumn exhaled, staring at the dress on the bed. It was ridiculous. Flashy. Nothing like what she would ever wear to a party.

...Which was probably the point.

She glanced at the three women...their eager faces, their ridiculous enthusiasm.
