A mage in the making: Unlocking my mage system-Chapter 42: Kill the beast!
Over the course of the years since the discovery of beasts, several creatures had been given specialized names pertaining to their size, feats, and capabilities. It was the best way to identify and describe a beast, ranking them based on their strength. Students of each academy were given lessons on several types of beasts, giving them the necessary knowledge they needed in order to identify a beast, know its strengths and weaknesses, and figure out the best way to eliminate it.
Kaiden was a talented student, always topping her class with high grades. She spent most of her time practicing her magic and learning new ways of combat. Throughout her stay in FAM, she had picked up a thing or two about beasts, learning about different types and species, gaining insight of their pros and cons.
When she saw Chuck’s flaming sword lodged inside the gigantic beast, it clicked on her mind as a realization dawned on her. Taking a few steps back, she stared at the beast, her heartbeat worsened as heavy beads of sweat formed on her temple.
"Guys I think we need to back up a little, we won’t be able to kill the beast no matter how powerful our attacks are," Kaiden said, her voice slightly cracking the more she spoke.
"And what the hell do you mean by that?" Chuck yelled as he ran across the muddy ground, towards the beast.
He sprinted, heading for the beast, the heat from the large wings behind him disintegrated the nearby leaves around. The immortal colossus lunged towards him with speed raising its claw directly above Chuck. It swung down, aiming to split in half. Chuck flew sideways, evading the incoming claw. He flew upwards, heading towards the beast’s head. When he was in a close enough range, he stretched his hands forwards reaching for his flaming sword.
The sword burned brightly as it roasted the innards of the beast. Black blood sprayed out like a fountain. Chuck grabbed onto the sword, pulling it out forcefully, releasing even more guts outwards. He slowly landed to the ground safely, ensuring to keep a safe distance between the beast and himself.
"This beast is called the immortal colossus. It uses the mana energy around it to enhance its biological composition, making it immune to all kinds of physical attacks," Kaiden yelled, trying her best to explain it.
"If this beast is immune to physical attacks, then how the fuck are we supposed to kill it?" Lance said as he headed backwards alongside Erik.
"You have to eliminate the source of its life. You have to destroy its crystal," Kaiden replied.
The whole group paused for a second, trying to process what Kaiden had just said. They felt a feeling of unease creep over their minds the more they thought about it. Killing a beast by directly destroying its core crystal wasn’t an easy feat. There were certain problems attached to it.
A beast’s core crystal was mostly guarded by hard and protective membranes, shielding it from common harm, and if one didn’t know the exact part of the beast’s body that the crystal was situated at, it was going to make the task almost impossible. But thanks to Chuck and his gift of the god eyes, finding the location of the crystal was going to be a walk in the park.
"Relax guys," Chuck said as he shut his eye lids, "let’s worry about how we’re gonna destroy the crystal... after I find its location."
Chuck’s view changed once more, he could see the flow of energy inside the beast’s body as it moved towards their position. He could see the strings of energies converging to a single point in the back of its body; he traced the flow of energy until he saw the midpoint. Chuck could see an orb of violent energy as it swirled with power, he managed to pinpoint the exact location of the crystal.
"Guys, you’re not gonna like this. It seems like the crystal is located at the mid section of the shell," Chuck said in a distressed tone.
"Ohh this is just great," Erik said as his brows furrowed, "I swear to God, Kaiden, if we die here, I’m gonna fucking kill you!"
"We don’t have time for pointless bickering, not now. Kaiden, do we necessarily have to destroy the beast’s crystal?" Chuck said, still keeping a close gaze at the advancing gargantuan, "it’ll kind of be pointless to kill it in the first place, without the crystal, there won’t be anything to benefit from it."
"You have a point," Kaiden said as she began to gather electric currents up her arm, "we can also extract the crystal from the beast, killing it in the process, but it seems almost impossible to do."
"Then let’s get to it."
Chuck ran forward, holding the hilt of his blade with both hands. When the beast was right before him, he shot up in the air, nearby grasses were set ablaze as Chuck’s wings flapped close to them. He propelled himself upwards, flying directly above the beast. The gargantuan colossus paid no attention to him as it kept its forward motion, aiming to annihilate the four figures before it.
Chuck saw this as an opportunity as he crashed down, heading directly towards the shell of the beast — he used his god eyes enabling him to know the exact spot to hit. Chuck thrusted his sword forward, pointing it at the location of the crystal. His figure crashed down like a shooting star, illuminating the dimly lit forestation. He seemed like a torrent of fire raining down, clearly about to cause absolute destruction.
With one last flap of his wings, Chuck’s body spun violently in a rotational motion. This gave him more velocity, making his body cut through the air, heading for the rocky shell of the beast.
"Let’s keep this thing distracted enough for Chuck to drill through its shell," Lance said as he gathered an attack of his.
Not caring about the state of the forest, Lance released several barrages of fire balls towards the beast. The blazing balls of fire traveled with speed heading towards the beast from several directions. They made a rough impact, raising dust into the air, clouds of smoke erupted from the beast as its innards burned violently.
Another wave of attack was about to impact the beast as Chuck readied himself. He tightened his grip around the flaming sword, his being spun downwards with an unimaginable speed. Before the beast could recover from Lance’s attack, it felt a searing and piercing pain behind its body. Chuck’s sword made a clean impact with the rocky shell, breaking it apart bits by bits. His body spun violently, increasing the depth of the sword in the beast’s shell.
The beast growled loudly in agony as the flaming sword burnt through its shell, melting its way through its body.
"Arrrghhhh."
Chuck grunted as he felt the strain on his palms, the hardness of the shell made the penetration unimaginably difficult.
"Maybe I can try something else."

The strings of energy swirling around the shell started getting pulled to another direction. The waves of energy on the shell of the beast seeped out, entering into Chuck’s being through every hole and opening there was. Chuck’s sword pierced through the shell more easily as the energies surrounding the shell quickly got absorbed into his body. He felt the raging surge of power course through his being, his strength increasing as his sword went though the shell even more easily.
The others watched in awe as they could see the visible waves of pulsating energy seeping into Chuck’s body. Chuck ripped though the shell, went past the tough membranes until he finally hit a hard section that completely resisted the force of his sword.
Without any second thought, Chuck dismissed the infernal craft, getting rid of the sword. He stretched his hands forward, latching onto the beast tightly. The more energy that Chuck absorbed from the beast, the weaker the shell got. He dipped his hand inside the opening made by his sword, he felt a shooting pain on his arm as the melted shell made contact with it.
"Shit!"
Chuck grunted in pain as he beared the pain. He reached out until he could feel a hard stone-like structure on his palms. A curve formed on his lips as he grabbed onto the hard stone. Chuck pulled it out with all the strength he could muster, ripping the crystal out of the beast’s shell forcefully.
The beast staggered slowly before it, limply collapsed onto the muddy section of the ground, dying instantly. Chuck climbed down carefully with the crystal on his palms. The crystal glowed brightly, humming with energy. Chuck could immediately tell that it glowed brighter than the regular beast crystal he harvested.

Series of messages appeared before Chuck, but his attention was shifted somewhere else as he noticed something before him.
There were several boulder looking stones several metres away — the boulders looked exactly like the shell of the beast he had just defeated. This realization made Chuck’s heart skip a beat as he took a few steps backwards.
"Guys, I think we need to leave... NOW!"
