A Mate For The Last Lycan-Chapter 54: THE KING BECAME CAUTIOUS
Chapter 54: THE KING BECAME CAUTIOUS
"Rhett and Declan fortified the River Creek pack." Dacre sat down behind the desk, on Khaos' chair. He hated when someone touched his things and the king did it casually, as he inspected every object on the table.
"Rhett must have been the one who led the warriors."
"Yes, I expected the same." Dacre looked around the room, as if he could suddenly find someone there, but aside from him and his royal beta, also Khaos and his gamma, there was no one there. "Where is that woman? Where did you put her?"
The way he said it was a bit weird, as if Zuri was some kind of decoration that needed to be put on display for whoever came here.
"Have your people found Silas?" Khaos ignored his last comment.
Silas was Alpha Roland's firstborn, the title of alpha would be passed down to him if Alpha Roland had not yet appointed a specific son of his to succeed him.
"Yes, my people will bring him to the palace first thing tomorrow morning," Dacre said. He actually didn't like it when Khaos instructed him like this. He had been holding so much resentment toward him because of how capable he was. He would become a threat to himself one day. "He was found in one of the brothels near the Three Deadly Ways."
With him going against his word about Zuri only proved that he was right all along.
However, knowing how clever Khaos was and how cunning he could be, he needed to be careful. Even though Khaos appeared to not care about the throne, with Xaden out of the picture, he would be the next in line once Dacre died.
People might think it was Dacre's advisors, who had helped him throughout the whole crisis when he became the king, when in truth, it was Khaos' suggestions and ideas that pulled them out of that pit.
The year the previous king died, the Great Lunar kingdom and the Wolfdale kingdom tried to attack them at the same time, trying to tear the kingdom apart. Determined to make the Celeste kingdom just history. But with Khaos' help, Dacre managed to formulate a strategy to ward off the attack and establish a cooperative relationship with the Wolfdale kingdom through marriage.
Khaos was the mastermind behind Dacre's political move and the king was well aware of his crucial role. It was also Khaos' suggestion to send himself away for two years to Three Deadly Ways, also...
It was his suggestion to use Faye to mess with Zuri's pregnancy.
This man was terrifying and if he eyed the throne, he would definitely get it. In this case, Dacre had to have his own plans to protect himself from Khaos and also suppress his influence.
"Let Silas lead the River Creek pack."
"He is a fool," Dacre scoffed. He rolled his eyes. "That man only knew how to fuck women and spend the pack's fortune at gambling tables."
"That's perfect." Khaos walked toward his table and picked up something from the surface, it was a strand of black hair. "We need someone who can be controlled."
It took a moment for Dacre to understand and his eyes lit up with understanding. "You are right. After Roland tried to backstab me with my own brother, we really don't need someone capable of causing such a fuss anymore."
Rhett and Declan were too bold and smart for their own good, but Silas was so stupid. He was a coward and the perfect candidate to be controlled.
"Talk to him later and send the royal warriors with him to take back the pack from his brothers."
Dacre's eyes flashed with annoyance. He waved his hand to dismiss Caiden and Leonard, his royal beta, from the room.
The two of them left and once it was only the king and the alpha, Dacre stood up and approached Khaos, his eyes filled with malice.
"You will not dictate what I should do. I don't want you giving me orders in front of other people, understand?" Dacre raised his brows, challenging Khaos to disagree with him. "Or, I can make you join our dear little brother in the gallows tomorrow." novelbuddy.cσ๓
The sense of victory he felt from successfully thwarting the coup made him feel invincible.
Yet, Khaos simply smirked and answered him calmly, as if this didn't bother him at all. "Understood." He was unfazed and this annoyed Dacre, but he kept it to himself.
In his mind, he started to formulate his own plan on how to get rid of Khaos from his court. But first, he needed to find someone as capable as Khaos to advise him.
Dacre had given Khaos too much power without him realizing it, to the point that it could endanger himself and his position.
"There is no need to make that woman stand trial tomorrow to clear her name. She doesn't need to announce her involvement in this matter. After all, her brother, Silas, will lead the royal warriors to take the River Creek pack back from his brothers under my order. That's a clear enough declaration that Alpha Roland had acted on his own."
Dacre picked a book from a shelf and then flipped through the pages casually.
"I changed my mind, if you really want her, you can keep her." Dacre thought, having Zuri as Khaos' mate would ruin his reputation, it would be the first step for him to keep him in check. "I will arrange your union together, but before that, I want to talk to her first. I want to see her."
"It's already very late, she is sleeping."
"That's not a request."
Khaos smiled at him. "Understood. You can wait comfortably."
After saying that, he left the room. It was three hours before sunrise and they eventually
needed to leave for the capital city.
Therefore, when Khaos entered his bedroom and found Zuri fast asleep, instead of waking her
up, he too climbed into the bed and slept next to her.
On the pillow, Shadow was sleeping between them.
