A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 87: Building A Coop
Serena stared at the two, Kiro holding a wooden plank while Theo had several more placed everywhere, making her stop in her tracks and wonder just what in the hell they were doing.
Wooden planks they had treated some time ago were scattered everywhere outside the front of the hut and there was a strong scent in the air. She couldn’t quite figure it out, but it was horrible.
"What are you two doing?" Serena finally asked after taking in the scene.
Theo glanced up at her and said, "Oh Serena... Great timing. Could you pass me that wooden plank over there?"
He pointed out a wooden plank near him just as Kiro answered her question and exclaimed, "We’re building a coop.... That way we can have lots of eggs!"
Serena wanted to smack herself at his words. She had gotten so distracted with other things that she had forgotten about their coop project.
However, this was a great chance to make use of that farming book. If she recalled correctly, it did have a section for livestock. Perhaps she could find something for coops.
The original owner’s memory of the family coop was limited and Theo and her were basically experimenting. But the book could reduce that need for experimenting.
"Here." Serena grabbed the wooden plank Theo asked for. "I need to grab something inside quickly and I’ll come back to help."
In reality, she just wanted to go to her subspace to check out the book, but she didn’t want to retreat into her subspace in front of Theo and Kiro, even if time stopped.
It felt too awkward honestly.
"Sure." Theo nodded his head, taking the wooden plank from her. He then turned to Kiro and said, "Hold this plank for me. I want to move this one here."
Serena left the two alone and went inside the hut. As soon as she was out of view, Serena entered her subspace. She found Liz lazing around on the ground in the center of the room.
"Finally!" Liz cried out, jumping up the moment it spotted Serena. "You were gone for so long! I was getting bored here. How have you not leveled up this room yet?"
"Because I’m not made out of coins. I need to save them..." Serena muttered, heading over to her basket holding all her books.
She shifted through them, searching for her farming book. Meanwhile, Liz shifted from its snake form into a small bird, flying over to Serena, curious about what she was up to.
"You do know that leveling up this room comes with benefits." Liz pointed out. "Not just more space."
Serena glanced at the bird before picking up the farming book. "That’s great, Liz, you can explain it all to me later, but right now I need to find a way to build a coop."
"A coop?" Liz landed on her shoulder. "Oh for wild birds! Yes, that book has a page on building coops. Uses an old method too. All wood and it’s recommended you have it near your garden so they can roam around during the day. Sunlight is good for egg laying, so make sure the coop has a window facing the morning sun."
Serena paused her skimming through the farming book to turn to Liz. "I didn’t know you could do that..."
"All information from guide books you buy automatically are stored into my memory." Liz explained. "I can give you information on anything you like granted it’s in the book."
"Well that’s handy." Serena mused aloud, mostly to herself.
It would certainly beat having to go back and forth between her books and current knowledge. She could make use of Liz as some kind of fact-checking system for her.
Which made dealing with the chatterbox system slightly more worth it.
She finally got to the page that Liz was telling her about and read through it. The coop design was simple - it had a section for nesting, perching, food and water bowls and windows for sunlight.
All of it was made of wood and it even gave detailed recommendations on how to care for the birds. She needed straw or long grass for the nesting area, Straw, ash and sand could be used for the flooring.
If she had them roam around the garden, it would reduce the need to clean droppings and they would act as pest and weed control for her. She could then give them vegetable scraps and look for some grain too.
She’d just need to make sure that she got the coop sitting in the right direction and that it was raised to keep small animals like rodents from trying to get into the nesting area.
After going through the design diagram several times to memorize it, Serena put her book back and turned her attention to Liz.
"You got everything down on that page right?" Serena asked.
"Yes." Liz answered.
"Good because you’re going to watch me make this coop and correct me on anything I do incorrectly." Serena explained. "I do believe I have an understanding of it, but you are to double check me please. After all, you did say you were a support system."
"I can’t argue with that." Liz sighed, shifting into a snake again and heading over to its favorite spot - Serena’s upper arm.
Serena shook her head at the blue snake, but said nothing, instead putting her book away. Once she was done, she headed back out of her subspace. She grabbed some water, sipping on a little before she headed out.
Theo glanced over at her as she came out and mused, "That was quick."
"I just needed some water." Serena shrugged it off like it was nothing. "Can I join in? I have an idea for how the coop should look."
"Go ahead." Theo nodded to her. "We were just experimenting right now, so if you have a plan we can go with it."
Serena smiled at his words before she began outlining the plan. They began laying out the floor, making it big enough for several wild birds before moving onto the walls and nesting area.
They made sure to have a window up high and a small door on the other side so the birds could go in and out. Finally they added the perching area and root which could be removed to get to the eggs.
