Chapter 56: Strange Little Box

A Marzipan.

Tiny figures.

She blinked.

There were seven small marzipan dolls candies—each one shaped exactly like her brothers.

Lucien’s was stoic, with arms crossed and a little sugar sword. Jared’s had a smirk and sugar shades. Callum’s was holding a book. Marcus wore sugar roses on his sleeves. Leo and Lance posed like knights with icing shields. Felix’s had a tiny frosting paintbrush.

Evelisse’s eyes sparkled.

"I love them."

Beneath them was a small scroll and a single flower.

A moon lily.

Rare. Pale blue. Blooming only under moonlight.

She picked up the scroll and unrolled it.

The handwriting was neat. Curled at the ends.

"To the girl who smiles at shadows." free𝑤ebnovel.com

That was it.

No name.

No signature.

Just... that.

Fluffy floated closer, squinting. "This... isn’t from anyone we know."

Snugglewuff growled very softly.

Evelisse glanced between the marzipan, the scroll, and the moon lily.

’That’s a little creepy,’ she thought. ’But also very poetic. Which makes it worse somehow.’

Fluffy narrowed his eyes. "Either someone is watching you... or someone wants you to know they’re watching you."

’...Well. They gave me sweets,’ Evelisse said, licking Lucien’s marzipan head. ’That’s at least slightly polite.’

"Princess," Fluffy said, dead serious, "licking magically suspicious snacks is not a survival tactic."

’I respectfully disagree. You told me to play dumb, and it has worked so far. There has been less death threa—’

"I know princess, but that doesn’t dispute the fact that..."

Evelisse closed her eyes, trying her best to act nonchalant about the situation and force back the fear and tears that were begging to break her strong facade.

’I can’t act up without drawing suspicions, I do not approach anyone until I have substantial evidence that would back my claim. Or else the perpetrators will simply lay low and strike when we’d least expect it. I have to find out who plotted the original Evelisse’s kidnapping and what they really wanted with her. But how can I do that if I DRAW ATTENTION by SEEKING EXTERNAL HELP or WORSE, they are the ACTUAL CULPRIT?!’

Fluffy’s ears lowered, "I’m sorry I put you in this situation even though all I wanted was that you lived a fulfilling fluffy new life. I had no idea this host was in a peculiar twisted situation as of when you were chosen."

Evelisse chuckled at the words and forced a smile to calm her nerves. She was going to get to the bottom of the whole fiasco and lay low as she dreamed.

’I can do this! I had lots of affection points now. I can defend myself if the need arises. I can do this!’

She repeated those words several times in her head till she believed it.

The flower glowed faintly. Only when she touched it absentmindedly.

That was the last straw.

Fluffy zipped up into her curls and shouted, "We should seriously report this, princess!"

’No! Wait! I wanna keep the marzipan! Look at Brother Jared! He’s so smug!"

"We’re taking the whole box and burning it if need be!"

’But the frosting! Brother Lucien!!’

Fluffy floated closer, sniffing the moon lily with narrowed eyes. "We need to tell your mother, she’s shown she could be trustworthy, your affection points have grown exponentially with her unlike the previous times you two have interacted!""

Evelisse froze. ’Tell Mama and Papa?’

"Yes. Immediately. Suspicious unmarked boxes do not get a free pass just because they smell like sugar and nostalgia."

She scrunched her nose. ’But what if it’s not anything scary? What if I tell them, and it turns out to be, like... some weirdly sweet and artsy birthday gift from a distant relative who has a dramatic flair for cryptic notes and fancy flowers?’

"Then we’re safe," Fluffy snapped. "If it’s not, we’re one step closer to death."

Evelisse looked down at the little marzipan brothers again.

She imagined her mother’s frown.

Her father’s concerned pacing.

Lucien looking at her like she just declared war by pastry.

And worse—worse than all of it—what if they took the sweets away and told her she wasn’t allowed to investigate at all?

She held the scroll up like it was under cross-examination.

’...Okay, listen,’ she said quietly. ’I might have joked about licking Lucien’s frosting face. But even I know rule number one of not-dying is: don’t eat weird food from people who don’t sign their creepy poetry.’

Fluffy blinked. "That’s... shockingly reasonable."

’I’m seven, not stupid.’

She sighed and stood up, gently pushing the lid back onto the box.

’I’ll tell them tomorrow,’ she muttered. ’When I have proof. Or at least better words to explain it. If I go to them now with a marzipan conspiracy and a glowing flower, they’ll probably think I fell into Brother Felix’s art supplies and dreamt this whole thing.’

"Or," Fluffy added dryly, "they’ll ground you from dessert until winter."

Evelisse gasped. ’We do not joke about such horrors.’

"So tomorrow?"

She nodded. ’Tomorrow. After I think. Strategize. Possibly interrogate the marzipan in case it talks.’

Snugglewuff yawned like he agreed.

Fluffy eyed her closely. "You promise not to eat them?"

’Scout’s honor,’ she said, placing a solemn hand over her chest. ’Besides... I want to find out who sent them. Not end up hexed into a pudding.’

She tucked the box inside a secret drawer behind her dollhouse, layering some toy blankets on top just in case anyone poked around.

She patted it once. ’Sleep tight, suspicious sugar bros.’

But even as she turned away, her eyes drifted back.

She could imagine the moon lily glowed faintly.

The scroll looking darker.

Like ink that only grew heavier with time.

And just before she left the room—

A strange sound echoed.

Hum.

She looked back.

The box was still.

But the same seashell from her bedroom—the one that had vanished earlier—now sat on her bedside table again.

Untouched.

And humming louder.

Evelisse stared.

’Okay. That’s just rude now.’

Fluffy hissed. "That’s not a coincidence."

Evelisse backed away slowly.

’...Okay, yeah. Tomorrow might need to come faster.’

She clutched Snugglewuff and Fluffy close, and for the first time since the ball...

The aftermath didn’t feel so sparkly.

Just quiet.

And waiting.
