Chapter 110: A chance to speak

Lara walked out of the prison, exhausted and sadder than she was when she walked in.

Curtis, who had been waiting anxiously further, instantly got out of the car and walked over to open the car door.

With a small, grateful smile, Lara got in. Then she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

Curtis got inside the car too, and as soon as he closed the door beside him, he turned to face her.

His brows were furrowed with concern.

"How are you, love? How do you feel?" he asked. His voice was filled with worry for her, and he wished she hadn’t been too stubborn about not letting him follow her in there.

Ever since Lara got discharged from the hospital, Curtis had been insanely worried about her.

Her memories weren’t back yet, and even though he had explained every single detail of their past to her, he was still worried.

And he had a lot of reasons to be concerned about her.

One, even though Lara had no choice but to believe him, he was still worried that she didn’t entirely believe him.

Another reason why he was worried was because she was his wife, and it was his duty to be worried, especially considering the fact that she had almost died.

He also didn’t like how exhausted she looked as she leaned her head back on the headrest.

Curtis pushed back another wave of deep bone apprehension as he held her gaze.

"Come on, baby. Talk to me. What did you guys talk about? Did she say anything to bother you?" he asked again.

Lara gave her husband a tired smile. "The meeting went well, I guess. She did not say anything out of the ordinary. Her words aligned with everything you told me. I just...I still can’t believe that Mike is dead."

Curtis shrugged. While it had been an unfortunate experience for the man to die at the hand of his wife like that, Curtis wasn’t particularly sad about the death.

Mike had been a very terrible person to his wife. Lara did not deserve everything he did to her, and Curtis believed that he deserved whatever happened to him.

Lara turned sad eyes to him.

"I’m sorry," she whispered. The apology was so out of place and sudden, but Curtis knew what she was apologising for.

Lara was apologising for not remembering, for making him drive her all the way to the prison just because she needed to be sure about his version of everything that happened.

Curtis gave her a small smile as he took her hand in his.

"For what? You have nothing to apologise for, baby," he said softly.

She shook her head but didn’t look away.

"No. I have to apologise. What I did, coming here even when you clearly didn’t want me to, that was wrong of me. Ever since I woke up, you’ve been good to me. Kind and patient," she stated, then paused for a brief moment.

"I should have believed you. I...I should not have come here. Seeing that woman like that, even though I don’t remember her, it shook me up a lot. There was a weird, crazy look in her eyes. It was... terrifying," Lara said as she shuddered.

Curtis leaned down to kiss her on the forehead.

"It’s fine, love. I’ll do anything for you. Anything that will prove to you that I am not lying. I wouldn’t lie to you, Lara. But I need you to know that, I want you to believe that without me having to convince you over and over."

Tears stung the back of Lara’s eyes at those words. He was always so kind to her, and even though Lara had seen proof that he was indeed her husband, even though his actions had been so consistent with his words, she still had trouble believing that he belonged fully, wholeheartedly, to her.

But she said none of these. Instead, she smiled at him and squeezed his hand.

"Let’s go home, Curtis. I miss my babies," she said.

His answering smile was wide and infectious, and as they drove out past the prison gates, Lara decided to let go.

She made a decision in her mind. She wasn’t going to ask questions anymore. She wasn’t going to doubt whatever Curtis told her.

He hadn’t lied to her once, and Lara was starting to believe that he wouldn’t lie to her. Ever.

So she let go of the past, and the farther the car was from the prison, the stronger her resolve grew.

The past was in the past. Tolu and Mike were forever out of her life now, and even though she felt a shred of pity at how Mike had died, she wasn’t going to fixate on it anymore.

Her future was waiting for her. Curtis and her babies were there, patiently holding out a hand to her.

And as Curtis drove past the large gates, as he drove down the driveway leading to their house, a smile bloomed on Lara’s face. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

When Curtis turned off the ignition, she instinctively grabbed his face and stared into his eyes.

Shocked, but deciding to say nothing, Curtis waited for her to speak.

"Thank you, Curtis. For being so patient with me. You have no idea how grateful I am," she stated.

Then, without waiting for a response, she leaned forward and kissed him.

Curtis froze. There hadn’t been any form of intimacy between them since the coma, and while he had been willing to wait for her until she remembered and for as long as she wanted to, he was thrilled at the kiss.

He kissed her back, trying so hard not to push things and make her withdraw. When they eventually broke away from the kiss though, Lara had a flushed and happy look on her face.

"Come on. Let’s go check up on our babies," she said with a smile.

Feeling better than he had been in months, Curtis got out of the car and held a hand to her.

They walked to the door, hand in hand, but as soon as Curtis pushed it open, he froze.

His mother was sitting in the living room, clearly waiting for them.

Anger flared in his veins and his grip on Lara’s hand tightened.

Lisa met his gaze and there was a guarded expression on her face. Before she could say anything though, Curtis spoke.

"Leave. I don’t want to hear anything. Just go. Get out," he snapped.

Lara’s brows furrowed into a frown. Since she remembered nothing, it was hard for her to properly determine the relationship between Citrus and his mother.

But judging from the stiffness in Curtis’s shoulders and the words he just said, it was obvious that they weren’t on good terms.

Lisa took a step closer before she spoke.

"Please give me a chance to speak, Curtis. I am not here to cause a scene. I am here to apologise."
