A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 111: Almost ruined my life
Lisa was nervous.
Hell, to refer to the maelstrom of feelings that was raging through her as nervous was inadequate.
She was more than nervous. Curtis’s mother was flat out terrified.
Her son stared her down with eyes devoid of any sort of familiar emotion, and the coldness in his gaze broke Lisa’s heart.
He was so aloof, so distant and Lisa knew that the chasm between them had grown wider than she realised.
Curtis, who used to be so close to her, was now incredibly angry and cold towards her like she was no more than a stranger.
Still, she had come here for a reason. And that reason was to apologise, to make things right between the both of them.
Lisa pushed past the lump in her throat before she spoke.
"I am sorry, Curtis. I am so sorry. I...I was wrong. Turns out that I had been wrong all along. I should have... trusted you. I shouldn’t have called your words bluff. I...I apologise, from the bottom of my heart."
The words stuttered out of her mouth, and her heart pounded violently against her chest as she waited for her son to say something, anything.
The damage between them was too much for just a few words of apology to change anything, but Lisa was hoping to start the repair from somewhere.
Curtis, still holding Lara’s hand, walked past the doorway and closed the door behind him. Lisa almost held her breath as he turned to stare at her again, and she suddenly wished that Laura was here with her.
"That... is not an apology," Curtis eventually spat at her, his eyes blazing with months worth of anger and resentment.
Tears threatened to roll down Lisa’s face at the emotions she saw in his eyes.
What had she done, she thought?
How much damage, how much havoc, had she wrecked?
"Curtis... Curtis please. I...I am so sorry. Since that day at the hospital, I haven’t been able to sleep. I can’t even breathe properly. Seeing you on the floor like that, losing all sense of logic and reason...it was too much for me. As I watched you cry, I realised that you have been right all along. You...you truly love that woman. And I am sorry for not seeing it all these while. I am sorry that I was blind to how genuine your feelings for her are. I am so sorry," she explained, and her last statement came out as a whisper.
Curtis’s jaw tightened at her words, but his gaze didn’t relent as he responded.
"No. No, Mother. No. I am not going to let you off just because you say a few words of apology. You almost wrecked my life, mother. You almost took everything from me. I begged you. I fucking pleaded for you to stop. I told you that I love her, that she is the love of my life and the mother of my children. But did you listen? No. No you didn’t. So don’t come here with some bullshit apology. I will not be accepting that," he snapped.
Lisa’s lips trembled with tears.
She took another step forward and tried to speak again. "Curtis..."
The tears in her voice made Curtis explode.
"NO. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT. DON’T YOU DARE CALL MY NAME. YOU HAD HER POISONED, MOTHER. YOU FUCKING THREATENED HER MAID TO FEED HER POISON. MY WIFE ALMOST DIED. AND WHEN I TRIED TO SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT IT, WHEN I CONFRONTED YOU, YOU TOLD ME THAT IT WASN’T A BIG DEAL. LARA ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF YOU AND YOU DIDN’T CARE."
Curtis was yelling now, and his anger simmered so thickly in the air that it was almost visible.
Tears gushed down Lisa’s face at his words, but Lara had gone totally, absolutely still.
Her husband’s words echoed repeatedly in her head, and her jaw was hanging open.
Her mother in law had tried to kill her? Just because she didn’t want her to get married to Curtis?
The words made something dawn on Lara. She, apparently, was the reason why Curtis wasn’t getting along with his family.
He had chosen her over them.
Lara’s heart ached so bad at the realization.
The confrontation between Curtis and his mother however, wasn’t over yet.
Lisa wringed her fingers together as she spoke. "I was wrong. I was so stupid and I was jealous. I was jealous that she was going to take you away from me. I thought she was a home wrecker, that her mission was to turn your backs on us and run away with your money. I now know how utterly stupid I was, my love. Please. Find a place in your heart to forgive me."
She sounded so earnest, and there was enough sincerity in her voice that Lara immediately knew that Lisa meant every word she just said.
But Curtis just snarled in his mother’s face.
"That is such a useless, pathetic excuse. I told you over and over. I pleaded with you. I even went as far as threatening you. Yet the moment I fell into a coma, the fucking moment you knew my wife needed to stay with me, you flew me out of the country. You shut her out. You kidnapped me and left her in the dark, worried as hell. And because of what you did, I almost got to the hospital too late. If I had been one second late, my wife and my kids would have bleeded to death. They would have died. And what would you have said, if that had happened? Sorry? SORRY? CAN YOU SEE THE EXTENT OF YOUR FOLLY NOW? DID YOU SEE HOW YOU ALMOST RUINED MY LIFE?" he barked.
Lisa flinched, the venom in his words making her blood thin.
There was no way, no assurance, that Curtis was going to accept her apology. Now that he was yelling in her face, Lisa belatedly realised that she had gone too far.
And now her son was going to hate her forever.
Curtis took a deep breath and turned away from her. He ran a hand through his hair before he spoke again.
"I don’t want your apology, mother. It is not going to change anything. You are a terrible person, and I despise you. I don’t want to see you again, Mum. Never. Stay the fuck away from me!"
The order slipped into Lisa’s skin and settled into her bones.
Without waiting for a response, Curtis turned around and left, taking Lara with him
Lisa watched as her son turned his back on her, and she was too helpless to do anything.
