Chapter 347: Marine Officer Berton 347

[Donald’s Perspective]

Just a few minutes after my conversation with Christian ended, Berton was brought in by someone.

Berton was an elderly man with all white hair and a very kind and approachable appearance. The moment he saw me, he snapped to his knees with a thud!

In this temporary council chamber, there were only a few Lycans closest to me. Seeing Berton give such a grand salute, everyone’s expression had a hint of surprise and curiosity, while I took the chance to scrutinize this Marine Officer without showing any emotion.

"Your Majesty, I have three very urgent matters to report to you! I know you still harbor resentment about the traitor auction at the Sant Angelo Hotel. The elite of the Lilo Sea shouldn’t have attended the banquet, but could you please listen to my explanation for these events first?"

As Berton spoke, his aged and swollen body began to tremble slightly, appearing deeply sad and remorseful.

I looked at Berton kneeling on the ground and gestured to Christian at my side, signaling him to help the man up from the ground. We, a group of strong Lycans, would seem a bit heartless if we indifferently let an old man kneel there like that.

Berton seemed surprised by my reaction. After a moment of astonishment, he quickly stood up with the help of Christian’s hand, wiping away the sweat and tears on his face while repeatedly expressing his gratitude. "Thank you, Your Majesty, for your understanding of an old man. I truly have no way to repay this kindness, and for that, I am ashamed!"

"Just say what you have to, and skip the nonsense. I will investigate the Sant Angelo Hotel banquet in due course. If not all the officials of the Lilo Sea have perished, the duty of oversight isn’t entirely on the shoulders of one Marine Officer," I said and took another sip from the cup of black tea, hoping to clear my head a bit more.

Upon hearing this, Berton stood frozen, his body stiffening. Christian brought over a chair for him to sit, while I began to silently observe him.

The continuous travel and battle had left me somewhat exhausted, so my expression when facing possibly problematic subordinate officials was not pleasant or friendly. My whole persona was more daunting than usual, which was likely the reason for Berton’s evident fear.

Of course, he also had many issues of his own to account for, which might have contributed to his nervousness.

"By your command, Your Majesty, I will get to the point! My son and daughter attended the Sant Angelo auction yesterday, but that does not reflect my stance or that of the Lilo Sea authority. They were deceived! The children had no idea about the significance of the banquet beforehand... they thought it was just a fun event and had no dealings with the traitor MASTER or Levi!"

"Brand and his sister even saved the Lycan Queen once at the auction, which the Lycan Queen can fully attest to! Moreover, Levi has close ties with the pirates at sea, which is something we have always kept an eye on." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Over the past two years, the Spirit Dragon Pack has become increasingly defiant of the Lilo Sea authority. They’ve been clashing with the Werewolf Gang over territory and maritime business, and the small conflicts have never ceased, which have been a constant headache for us!"

Berton spoke at length, but only a few key points caught my attention. "Explain in detail about the pirates," I asked with a furrowed brow, my fingers unconsciously tapping on the desk.

Swallowing nervously and with great seriousness, Berton replied, "Yes, Your Majesty! These pirates are foreign werewolves marauding in the waters of the Lilo Sea, robbing ships and murdering their crews. Their usual hideout is on Poison Snake Island to the north. Speaking of which, the disappearance of the Empress Dowager, Licia, is closely linked to them as well. I believe Mr. Christian must be well aware of this and has reported it to you, hasn’t he?"

The information in Berton’s words was substantial. Hearing this, I let out a slight sigh without answering his question but continued to inquire, "So you mean to say, the group that abducted the Empress Dowager are assassins as well as pirates at sea? They have connections with the Spirit Dragon Pack, right?"

Berton nodded frantically, as if fearful that any delay might lead me to devour him.

I raised an eyebrow, choosing not to dwell on this matter further, and asked aloud, "And the third matter?"

Seemingly unable to keep up with my train of thought, Berton opened his mouth with a confused look in his eyes.

"His Majesty is asking you about the third matter you wanted to report," Christian said with a furrowed brow, his gaze fixed on Berton, full of scrutiny.

As if struck by a revelation, Berton wiped the sweat from his forehead and hurriedly explained, "Yes, Your Majesty. To make amends, I now offer you a strategy for how to proceed to Poison Snake Island to rescue the Empress Dowager. Additionally, I hope to borrow an assault team from your men to help us defeat these lawless pirates and restore peace to the maritimes of Lilo Sea."

After Berton finished speaking, there was silence in the council chamber, with no one responding to his suggestion, and the atmosphere became somewhat tense and still.
