Chapter 13: Great Victory

"What was the weakness of zombies again? Right, it was their head."

Kev took a deep breath, steadying his nerves. He aimed, and with perfect precision, pulled the trigger.

Bam!

The bullet drilled a hole right through the middle of its head. For a moment, its movements halted, and it collapsed to the ground in a heap.

Seeing this, Kev smiled, "As expected, it worked."

Just then!

Guwaghhh!

A guttural, bone-chilling growl thundered through the room, and like a demon emerging from the depths of hell, the rotting corpse pulled itself up from the ground in an unnatural manner.

Its bones cracked and splintered, and its skin tore apart under the weight of its disturbing movement.

With every agonizing creak of its joints, it seemed less like a living being and more like a puppet bound by a cursed string, its grotesque form driven only by an unrelenting hunger.

Its eyes landed on Kev, swirling with madness and greed.

If looks could affect reality, Kev would have already turned into a seasoned chicken and served to it on a silver platter.

"Holy! It's not dead! The movies lied to me!" Kev cursed under his breath, his heart pounding. "And it looks pissed. Don't tell me it's going to get tougher, like a raid boss entering its second phase."

He jinxed himself hard.

Three steps later, it broke into a full-blown sprint.

Why was a dead thing with a decomposing body and broken bones able to move so fast?

Kev found it immensely unfair. But there was no use complaining. Complaining wouldn't help him survive.

With his life hanging in the balance, he instinctively moved to save himself.

Adrenaline surged through his bloodstream, and his body responded.

He too ran, with a speed that would make a pro athlete jealous.

That's what adrenaline did to a person. It unleashed potential they never knew they had.

A deadly game of chase began.

The corpse ran after Kev, while he ran away from it like his life depended on it. Well, it did. If he got caught by it, he would be eaten alive. There was no doubt about it.

What it would feel like, he didn't even want to think about it.

Kev used the platform to make the corpse run in a circle behind him like a good little dog. At the same time, he kept shooting at it.

Click!

A lap later, his gun clicked.

The magazine was empty.

Kev tossed it aside and pulled out his rifle. It was always faster to switch to your secondary weapon than to reload.

He fired behind him.

Every bullet that came out of its barrel hit the thing trailing behind him. It was barely noticeable, but the corpse started to slow down.

Three laps later, exhaustion began to creep up on Kev. He hadn't started the fight in his best condition, and now he was being forced to run like a dog! He was feeling deadly tired.

Fifteen laps later, he was at his wits end.

"Should I just blast it to smithereens?"

That thought just popped into his mind when he heard a thud.

He was so familiar with this sound, he couldn't possibly mistake it.

It was unmistakably the sound of a body dropping to the ground.

He looked behind him and stopped.

The corpse that had been madly chasing after him had dropped dead.

It lay on the ground lifelessly.

"Is it really over?"

Kev was skeptical.

He took a few things out of his bags and threw them at it from a distance, but it didn't respond in any way.

It seemed like... He had really won against this monstrosity that seemed to have escaped from someone's worst nightmare.

"You can never be too sure."

He took the monocle out of his pocket and wore it before looking at the unmoving corpse that had fallen beside the iron-clad giant's body.

Very quickly, its effect came into play.

"I exhausted it to death."

Kev threw his head back and laughed his ass off.

Such a dangerous thing and it was killed for such a ridiculous reason.

He couldn't believe his eyes.
