Abyss Descension: I Perform Rituals to Evolve In The Apocalyps-Chapter 63: Pyromancer (2)
Cars lay overturned, shop windows gaping open like toothless mouths, and the air hung heavy with the acrid stench of burnt metal and rot. Every shattered doorway seemed to hide whispers of the past—ghosts of lives and hopes swallowed whole by the creeping darkness.
Suddenly, a low, guttural growl shattered the fragile quiet. From the depths of a collapsed building, a figure emerged. It was one of the elemental Revenants — a grotesque fusion of earth and shadow, its body oozing with molten rock, veins glowing bright orange beneath cracked obsidian skin. This creature’s every step scorched the pavement, leaving smoldering footprints behind.
"Get ready!" Kev’s voice was sharp, cold.
Shadows leapt from his fingertips, coiling and stretching, forming sharp blades and whips that sliced through the thickening air.
The molten Revenant swung a fist the size of a boulder toward Lena, who barely dodged as her spear caught the edge of the fiery blow, sparks flying. Sidhu fired a series of quick shots, each bullet striking the creature’s molten hide but seeming only to slow it.
Kev stepped forward, his shadowy blades flashing, slicing through the Revenant’s fiery flesh. But the core—the pulsating nucleus embedded deep within its chest—was protected by an ever-shifting shell of molten rock.
The battle became a brutal dance. The Revenant smashed down with fiery fists, cracking the pavement, sending jets of molten spray in every direction. Kev darted between attacks, the shadows obeying his every command but exacting a toll. His breath grew ragged, sweat cooling on his skin as the whispers in his mind grew louder—demanding more, warning of losing himself to the darkness.
Suddenly, the creature reared back and let out a terrible roar, flames bursting forth in a wave of heat that singed the edges of Kev’s shadow cloak.
He summoned all his will, weaving the darkness into a cage of tendrils that wrapped tightly around the Revenant’s limbs, binding it like a prisoner.
With a cry, Kev plunged a spear of pure shadow into the nucleus exposed beneath the molten armor. The creature convulsed violently, sparks flying as its fiery core shattered and exploded in a shower of glowing embers.
The heat faded, and silence reclaimed the ruins.
Panting and bloodied, Kev sank against a crumbled wall, shadows retreating reluctantly from his trembling hands. Around him, the group caught their breath, their faces etched with exhaustion and relief.
"You pushed too hard," Lena said, her voice gentle but firm.
Kev looked up, meeting her eyes. "If I don’t, we don’t survive."
Agatha knelt beside him, pressing a rag soaked in antiseptic to a shallow cut on his arm. "You’re not a weapon, Kev. You’re one of us."
The group’s quiet solidarity grounded him, but Kev knew the truth—his power was a burden few could understand. Every time he wielded the shadows, he felt pieces of himself slipping away, darkness seeping into his bones.
He shook his head, pushing the thoughts away. "We keep moving. We find shelter. And we figure out how to fi
ght smarter."
They pressed onward, the ruined city stretching like a nightmare dreamscape beneath the gray skies. As dusk began to fall, the shadows deepened, thickening around their feet and creeping up walls like living smoke.
Suddenly, a chilling howl echoed from the distance—a sound like a wolf’s roar twisted through a nightmare filter. It was a warning. The Revenants were hunting.
Kev’s heart hammered as figures appeared in the gloom: four Revenants, each grotesquely elemental and uniquely terrifying. One was wreathed in poisonous green fog, its tendrils reaching and twisting like snakes. Another crackled with violet lightning, its eyes flashing with cruel, electric malice. A third was a whirlwind of sand and shattered bone, its form shifting with unnatural fluidity. The last was a massive, frost-coated beast, its breath freezing the air into glittering shards.
"Form up!" Lena shouted. "No gaps
Sidhu loaded his pistol with trembling hands, Parvi drew her crossbow with lethal precision, and Bell readied his rifle.
Kev’s shadows stirred, swirling into a dark storm around him.
The poison Revenant lunged first, tendrils slashing toward the group. Kev slammed his palms forward, and walls of shadow erupted, blocking the deadly fog before it could reach them. The gas hissed against the darkness, dispersing harmlessly.
The electric Revenant crackled toward Sidhu, lightning arcing wildly. Sidhu dodged and fired, but the creature’s speed was overwhelming.
Kev stepped between them, summoning shadow whips that cracked and lashed out. The lightning struck the darkness and fizzled, redirected harmlessly.
The sand Revenant swirled like a cyclone, debris whipping in a deadly dance. Parvi fired bolt after bolt, striking vital points, but the creature’s shifting form absorbed many hits.
Kev wove shadows into chains, snaring snaring the swirling bones and pulling the creature off balance.
The frost Revenant advanced slowly, eyes glowing cold and merciless. It raised a giant claw, sending shards of ice flying like deadly daggers.
Kev summoned a shield of swirling shadows, absorbing the icy shards as the others closed in.
With a silent command, Kev’s shadows wrapped tighter around the elemental beasts, binding and constricting. He focused on the electric Revenant’s nucleus, weaving darkness through the electric arcs, dampening their power.
With a sudden, brutal strike, Kev plunged a shadow dagger deep into the core. The creature convulsed, sparks exploding in a blinding flash before it collapsed.
The poison Revenant shrieked as Kev’s shadow blades tore through its foggy form, slicing open its nucleus. The creature dissolved into poisonous mist.
The sand Revenant fought fiercely, but Kev’s chains tightened, and with a surge of power, he shattered its core into dust.
Finally, the frost Revenant snarled, swinging its massive claw, but Kev met it with a spear of pure darkness that pierced straight through the icy heart.
The creature cracked and shattered like brittle glass, the frost melting into nothingness.
Breathing hard, Kev sank to his knees, the shadows around him flickering in exhaustion.
Lena knelt beside him, her voice soft but urgent. "Kev, you can’t keep doing this alone."
He shook his head, voice hoarse. "If I don’t, we all die."
Agatha’s hand found his shoulder, steady and sure. "We’re here. We fight together."
For the first time, Kev allowed himself a flicker of hope—a fragile light in the endless dark.
The battle was far from over, but as the sun’s weak light struggled through the clouds, Kev knew this: no matter the darkness waiting ahead, they would face it—together.
The cold wind swept through the empty streets, carrying with it the faint smell of smoke and decay. Kev led the group with a steady gait, though each step felt heavier than the last. The ruined city around them was a labyrinth of broken buildings, crumbled walls, and half-collapsed overpasses. Beneath the ashen sky, every shadow seemed alive, twitching with a restless hunger.
Lena, spear in hand, moved at Kev’s left flank, her eyes constantly scanning every nook and alleyway. Agatha was just behind, a bow strung and ready, her keen gaze piercing the dusk. Sidhu kept close with his pistol, fingers twitching as if itching to fire, while Parvi adjusted her crossbow strap, her breath steady but eyes sharp. Doctor Bell carried the group’s supplies
and medkit, his weary face showing the strain of days without real rest.
Kev felt the familiar weight of shadows pressing at his mind — dark, whispering tendrils, eager to slip inside, to claim him. His fingers twitched, and the shadows coiled like living things around his arms, responding to his silent call. He could feel the power humming, waiting, always hungry for release.
But tonight was different. The darkness felt heavier, more demanding, as if it knew something was coming.
The group passed beneath a shattered highway overpass, the sky darkening with the setting sun. The distant echo of a howl cut through the silence — a warning, primal and chilling. Lena’s spear snapped upward in a defensive arc. "Revenants," she said grimly. "They hunt in packs now."
"Where?" Agatha’s voice was barely above a whisper, but her eyes scanned the broken street ahead.
Kev’s shadow senses tingled. The dark tendrils beneath his skin coiled tighter as he focused, reaching out beyond sight. "Ahead, in the ruins near the old library."
They moved cautiously forward. The ruined library loomed, its stone pillars cracked and half-buried in rubble. The entrance yawned open like a black wound.
Suddenly, four figures burst from the shadows.
The first Revenant was a grotesque monstrosity wreathed in crackling lightning. Purple arcs of electricity danced along its twisted limbs, sparking as they lashed the air. Its eyes glowed with malicious violet fire.
Beside it, a poisonous Revenant slithered forward, tendrils of thick green mist curling and writhing, hissing with venomous intent.
The third was a whirlwind of dust and bone shards, spinning like a cyclone of death. Its shifting form gave no solid shape, its movements erratic and terrifying.
The last was a towering frost Revenant, its skin glistening with ice, breath freezing the very air. It moved slowly but with relentless purpose.
