Chapter 131: Decision Made

The sound of fingers rapidly tapping against a keyboard filled the office, blending seamlessly with the occasional shuffle of papers and the low hum of the city beyond the tall glass windows. The scent of freshly brewed coffee lingered in the air, but its warmth did little to ease the tension that had settled deep in Evander’s shoulders.

Hugo leaned against the desk, arms crossed, watching his boss with an expression that wavered between amusement and disbelief. "I can’t believe you actually told Lydia she could meet Ashton." His eyes narrowing slightly. "Who are you, and what have you done with the Evander Walton I know?"

Evander exhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose before leaning back in his chair. His expression remained unreadable, but the subtle twitch of his jaw betrayed his internal conflict. "I can’t believe it either." He let out a tired chuckle, shaking his head. "But after hearing what Delphinia had to say... I think it’s the best decision."

Hugo’s brows shot up, a teasing smirk curving his lips. "Ah, of course. Delphinia said something, and suddenly, Evander Walton—the man who never budges—changes his mind." He tapped his chin in mock contemplation. "You know, I never thought I’d see the day when someone could wrap you around their finger."

Evander shot him a dry look, but the corner of his mouth twitched in response. "It’s not like that."

"Oh, really?" Hugo drawled, stepping closer and pulling up a chair across from him. "Let’s see... You, the same man who once said you’d never let Lydia anywhere near Ashton, suddenly reconsidered just because Delphinia gave you her opinion?" He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You do realize what that means, right?"

Evander sighed, rubbing his temple. "It means she made a good point, that’s all."

Hugo laughed. "It means she has a hold on you, my friend." His expression softened slightly. "And honestly? I think that’s a good thing."

Evander studied him for a moment, a flicker of curiosity in his gaze. "Why do you say that?"

"Because you’ve changed." Hugo gestured vaguely. "You’re still the same Evander—ruthless when necessary, sharp as ever, but... you’re different. More human. Less like the cold, untouchable man you used to be." He tilted his head. "Delphinia brought that change."

Evander leaned back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling as he let Hugo’s words sink in. It was true, wasn’t it? Before Delphinia, he made decisions based purely on logic and control, never letting emotions cloud his judgment. But now... things were different. He considered more than just the consequences—he considered how those decisions affected the people around him.

Hugo chuckled, breaking the silence. "You know, I used to wonder if you’d ever let anyone in. Hell, I bet even Julian had his doubts." He shook his head, smiling. "But then Delphinia came along, and suddenly, you’re letting her influence your decisions. That’s big, Evander."

Evander hummed, neither confirming nor denying it. Instead, he let his mind drift to Delphinia—her unwavering patience, her quiet strength, the way she could disarm him with just a few words. It wasn’t that she forced him to change; it was that she made him want to.

Hugo studied him for a beat before leaning back with a satisfied smirk. "So, what exactly did she say that made you change your mind?"

Evander sighed, rolling his shoulders as if the weight of the decision still sat heavy on him. "She made me realize that keeping Lydia away forever wouldn’t be fair to Ashton." He paused, his gaze darkening slightly. "I still don’t trust Lydia. I never will. But Ashton... he deserves to have a choice. If he wants to meet her, I shouldn’t be the one to stop him."

Hugo nodded slowly, tapping a finger against his knee. "That’s surprisingly... reasonable of you."

"Don’t get used to it."

They both chuckled, the tension in the room easing slightly. But then Evander exhaled sharply, rubbing his forehead. "I just hope this isn’t a mistake."

Hugo studied him for a moment before shaking his head. "I don’t think it is."

Evander raised a brow, and Hugo continued, "You’re not doing this for Lydia. You’re doing it for Ashton. And that’s the difference." He crossed his arms. "Besides, if Lydia tries anything, you’ll handle it."

Evander smirked faintly. "That’s a given."

Hugo stood up, stretching. "Well, I, for one, think Delphinia is a miracle worker. Maybe I should start taking notes."

Evander rolled his eyes. "Get out of my office."

Hugo laughed as he headed for the door, but before he stepped out, he glanced back with a knowing look. "For what it’s worth, Evander... I think Delphinia’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you."

Evander didn’t respond right away. Instead, he let the words settle in his chest, something warm blooming there before he could push it away.

Evander sat back in his chair, exhaling slowly as Hugo’s words lingered in his mind. Delphinia’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you.

He didn’t argue. How could he?

A small, almost reluctant smile tugged at his lips as his thoughts drifted to her. To the way her eyes lit up when she talked about something she loved. To the way she tilted her head when she was curious. To the way she had seamlessly woven herself into his life, turning everything he thought he knew upside down—and somehow making it better.

His life had been steady before her. Predictable. But it had also been... dull. Like he was just going through the motions without realizing what he was missing.

Then Delphinia came along, and suddenly, everything felt brighter.

More alive.

More real.

Evander chuckled softly, shaking his head. Who would have thought? Him—someone who never believed in fate or miracles—now sitting here, unable to deny how much Delphinia had changed him.

He only sighed again, rubbing the bridge of his nose one last time before whispering under his breath, "I hope I didn’t make the wrong decision."
