Chapter 192: The List

Evander sat behind his large desk, fingers tapping rhythmically on the smooth surface. Papers were neatly stacked in front of him, and the screen of his laptop glowed faintly. The view from the wide glass windows behind him showed the bustling city skyline, but Evander’s mind was elsewhere.

No matter how much he tried to focus on work, his thoughts kept circling back to Delphinia.

The image of her at hospital yesterday still haunted him. Even though the doctor assured him it was just fatigue, his jaw clenched as he recalled how fragile she looked. He hated seeing her like that. The woman who had always been so strong, so full of quiet determination, now reduced to weakness.

He sighed heavily, leaning back in his chair. He closed his eyes for a brief second, trying to shake off the anxiety. Yet, the knot in his chest refused to loosen.

A knock echoed through the office, breaking the silence.

"Come in."

The door opened, and Hugo stepped inside. The man carried a calm demeanor, but there was something cautious in his eyes. He walked closer, holding a tablet in his hand.

"I don’t want to sound like a tattle-tale, sir... but I think you need to know this."

Evander’s brows knitted together. "What is it?"

Hugo shifted on his feet before speaking. "The other day... you wife contacted me. She asked for a list of our business partners, colleagues... even the employees here."

Evander’s eyes narrowed slightly, but his lips curved faintly. "Then give it to her."

Hugo’s lips parted as if he’d expected a different reaction. "Just like that? Aren’t you even a little suspicious?" His eyes twinkled playfully. "I know you’re head over heels, but—"

Evander cut him off with a sharp look. "She probably needs it to finalize the guest list for the party."

Hugo blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Wait... party? What party?"

"My birthday party."

"You actually agreed to that?"

Evander leaned back, folding his arms across his chest. "My mother and my wife are the ones throwing the party. I simply gave them permission." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Hugo’s mouth fell open before he quickly shut it, shaking his head. "Is the sky about to fall? Since when does Evander Walton like parties?"

Evander smirked faintly. "I don’t. But they both insisted."

Hugo crossed his arms, grinning. "Still... you gave them permission. That means you’re willingly letting people crowd your space for a party in your honor." He paused, dramatic. "I never thought I’d see the day."

Evander chuckled under his breath, a rare sound that made Hugo’s brows lift in surprise.

"I guess I’ll wait for my invitation, then," Hugo said, tapping his fingers against the tablet before turning to leave.

The office door closed softly behind him, leaving Evander alone once more. He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temple. The tension in his chest lightened just a little, but the worry for Delphinia still lingered.

By the time Evander arrived home that evening, the sun was already sinking behind the horizon. The house was quiet, wrapped in a peaceful stillness.

Evander walked into the living room and immediately spotted Delphinia sitting on the couch. She had her legs tucked beneath her, a throw blanket draped over her lap. Her phone was in her hand, eyes narrowed at the screen with deep concentration.

A soft smile touched his lips before he spoke. "You look serious."

Delphinia startled, her head snapping up. She blinked, then let out a small laugh. "I didn’t hear you come in."

Evander walked closer, his hands slipping into his pockets. "Maybe because you’re too busy staring at whatever that is."

Delphinia’s lips curved, a little sheepish. "It’s just the guest list for your birthday party. I’m trying to make sure I don’t miss anyone."

Evander sat on the edge of the couch, close enough that their knees nearly brushed. His sharp eyes glanced at the phone screen. "Please... be modest. Don’t invite too many people."

Delphinia’s brows furrowed playfully. "You don’t want to look like a biased boss, do you? Every employee needs to be invited. Otherwise, people will talk."

Evander sighed, a small smirk tugging at his lips. "I should’ve known you’d use that against me."

Delphinia giggled softly, leaning back into the cushions. Her eyes twinkled, but there was something thoughtful lingering behind them.

The room fell into a comfortable silence—just the faint ticking of the clock filling the air. Evander could tell something was on her mind.

Finally, Delphinia called his name, her voice soft. "Evander..."

He glanced at her. "What is it?"

She hesitated, fingers gripping her phone a little tighter. Her eyes flickered down to the screen, then back to him. There was uncertainty in her gaze, as if she were debating whether to ask.

"Should we... invite Lydia?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and delicate.

Evander’s jaw tensed almost imperceptibly. He leaned back slightly, his dark eyes locked onto hers.

For a moment, he didn’t say anything.

Delphinia’s fingers fidgeted against her phone. "I know things are... complicated between you two. But she’s... she’s still Ashton’s mother. I just thought—"

Evander cut her off gently. "If you want to invite her... do it."

Delphinia blinked, surprised by how easily he agreed.

Evander’s gaze softened. "This party is as much yours as it is mine. I trust your judgment."

Delphinia’s heart swelled, her eyes growing misty. She pressed her lips together, nodding slowly.

"Thank you..."

Evander reached out, brushing a stray strand of hair from her cheek. His touch lingered for a moment longer than necessary.

"Just don’t expect me to entertain her," he muttered dryly.

Delphinia let out a breathy laugh, the tension breaking.

"Noted."

Evander’s lips twitched, but there was still a shadow behind his eyes. He leaned back against the couch, folding his arms. Despite his calm exterior, the thought of Lydia attending made something unsettled stir inside him.

Delphinia went back to her phone, adding Lydia’s name to the list.

But neither of them spoke about how that one name carried far more weight than any other.
