Chapter 230: Chapter 230: No Need to Sleep on the Streets Anymore

Zane had just finished treating his wound when the meal Ansel had ordered arrived.

Everyone else left the CEO’s office.

"Let’s go, have something to eat," Sophia said, holding his hand.

Zane didn’t get up. He reached over and wrapped his arms around her soft waist, trapping her in his embrace. It seemed she had gained some weight.

He carefully held her, pressing his ear to her belly, quietly listening for any movement inside.

"How does it feel?" he asked.

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean how does it feel with him inside you?" Zane gently cupped her waist and kissed her belly repeatedly.

Sophia suddenly felt warm, stroking his hair as her gaze landed on his bare back. She furrowed her brows and hesitated.

"No real sensation; he’s not even two months yet, so what could I possibly feel?" she said.

"I see."

Sophia let him hold her as she gently traced her finger over a whip mark on his shoulder.

The muscles on Zane’s shoulder twitched. He refocused and said, "Let’s go, I’m hungry."

He picked up a shirt from beside him, preparing to put it on.

Sophia took his shirt, "Don’t wear it. Dr. Wallace said to keep it dry. If that wound festers, she’ll have to slaughter a pig for you." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"...You actually believe her?"

Thinking of this, Zane couldn’t help but feel sorry for Miles.

Cecilia Wallace is a good choice. Even though she’s blunt at times, she handles conversations with ease, and her free-spirited nature has earned her many connections, but Miles likes gentle and sweet-natured people.

In every aspect, Cecilia doesn’t fit that mold.

Cecilia only found out about the misunderstanding with Zane earlier from overhearing Ansel. Perhaps Cecilia also misunderstood Miles, thinking he was loyal.

Yet, a misunderstanding is just that; they’re truly not suitable for each other.

Miles has always been proud and dismissive of wealthy but superficial rich girls. As a macho man, Miles probably wants a woman by his side who is frail and needs his protection to feel accomplished.

"This Dr. Wallace..." Sophia began, then paused.

Zane sat next to her, placing some food on her plate. "Miles’ fiancée. But I heard she went to break off the engagement by herself yesterday, so I guess she’s no longer his fiancée."

"Why the breakup?"

"Probably just not suitable," Zane replied.

No wonder Cecilia called her sister-in-law earlier. She probably wanted to avoid any misunderstanding with Sophia. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have directly addressed her by name at their first meeting today.

They ran out of topics, and Sophia quietly ate her meal.

Zane watched her as he ate, fearing that her coming to him today was just a dream.

He felt as though he had been living in this empty CEO office for more than a century. With this woman beside him, it was as if some void was filled.

"Stop staring and eat, the food’s getting cold," Sophia said, slightly embarrassed.

"Alright." Zane smiled but continued to gaze at her.

Silence fell between them again.

"Can I go back home tonight?" he asked.

"..." Sophia looked up, finding a mix of grievance and humility in his eyes.

She put down her chopsticks and said apologetically, "I’m sorry, Zane..."

"Looks like I won’t be sleeping on the streets," he chuckled, patting her head.

Sophia continued to eat.

Even though things seemed fine on the surface, her guilt and heartache for Zane kept flowing like a relentless stream.

She had to do something to make up for her guilt towards him.

She pondered, admiring this man’s perfection.

Zane observed this person who once chatted non-stop during meals now deep in thought. It seemed she still couldn’t get over everything.

She must be feeling terrible inside.

The more nonchalant Zane acted, the more her guilt tormented her.

That afternoon, Sophia rested in his CEO office.

Zane had to attend a banquet with Mayor Lynn that evening, so he worked outside the suite after lulling her to sleep.

In the afternoon, she slept deeply, and Zane didn’t wake her. He left her a message before leaving the company with Harry.

When Sophia woke up, there was a cup of warm milk on the bedside table.

She opened the curtains, and as the sunset poured through the windows, the entire suite lit up brightly. She hadn’t realized she had slept for so long.

Looking out over the city’s evening rush hour, she almost felt the superiority of a CEO standing high above, observing the masses.

But when alone in this vast CEO office, it felt especially desolate.

She could almost imagine Zane standing here with a glass of red wine, indulging in the scene with the moon.

It was all so lonely and desolate.

Then, Hugh Irving called, and they talked for a full fifteen minutes.

When Sophia left the room, she found a metal lighter on his desk, next to an ashtray that had been freshly cleaned. However, the faint scent of tobacco still lingered in the air.

She glanced at it and took the lighter.

"Madam..." Ansel followed her, wanting to ask something but didn’t dare.

"If you want to eat meat, keep that mouth shut," Sophia seemed to be in a bad mood.

Ansel hurriedly closed his mouth.

It was past eleven at night.

Sophia had already dozed off in bed.

She had no energy to wait for Zane to return.

On his way back, Zane heard firetruck sirens midway through the drive. He glanced out and was about to look away when he suddenly instructed the driver to stop.

He watched intently as firefighters worked; it was Tim Sawyer’s studio that had caught fire.

Ever since she left last year, Tim Sawyer’s studio had gained quite the reputation. Ever since the Professor Fumble account went public, her studio had been suppressed. Its fame fluctuated, but it just managed to maintain the status quo, unable to rise further.

Gradually, her respect for ’Professor Fumble’ turned into jealousy.

The once unattainable person had become her arch-nemesis.

The studio, recently renovated, didn’t appear to suffer from an electrical fire, more likely arson.

Zane sneered, "Drive."

Serves her right.

Tim probably offended someone other than him.

"Mr. Sterling, this..." Harry said from the passenger seat, still reviewing documents.

Seeing Zane’s expression, he couldn’t help but suspect Zane might be behind it.

"I’m a good citizen," Zane stated.

"Yes, yes..."

Harry’s response was a bit dubious.

Zane chuckled.

He must have done something to make people around him think he was a villain.

Harry didn’t know, the last time Zane claimed to be a good citizen, Drake Morgan was dismembered.

The time before that, when he said it, Beau Morgan was jailed.

And before that, when he said it, Henry Quinn went bankrupt.

...

This time, it seemed like he might be telling the truth.
