After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 126: Eliza Sutton Is Doomed
The smile on Brenda Preston’s face froze.
She had never imagined Shane Lockwood would say such a thing.
’What does this mean?’
’Does this mean Shane Lockwood has accepted Eliza Sutton as Mrs. Lockwood?’
’This is unacceptable!’
’And didn’t Master Lockwood personally announce, in front of everyone, that he would hold a wedding for Eliza Sutton and Shane Lockwood?’
’What does that mean?’
’Is Eliza Sutton going to secure her position as Madam Lockwood?’
’This can’t happen!’
’Absolutely not!’
"Shane... no, President Lockwood, that woman, Eliza Sutton, is utterly deceitful. She’s an expert at putting on a front. You can’t let her fool you!"
Shane Lockwood’s brows knitted together in clear displeasure. "Manager Preston, are you meddling in my personal affairs? On what grounds are you meddling in my personal affairs? Is it the place of a mere manager to overstep her bounds like this?"
"I... President Lockwood, I mean well. I’m just looking out for you."
Shane Lockwood was blunt. "Then you can keep your good intentions and your ’looking out for me.’ Secretary Irvine, issue a formal reprimand for Brenda Preston to be circulated throughout the entire Group."
"Shane!"
Brenda Preston’s face fell. ’If a reprimand was really circulated throughout the entire Group, how could she ever show her face again!’
But Shane Lockwood had already wheeled himself away.
As she tried to follow, she was blocked by Erik Irvine.
"Secretary Irvine, you’re going to stop me too?" Brenda Preston asked, incensed.
"Yes."
"Secretary Irvine, are you unaware of my feelings for Shane? Do you really want the brilliant and wise Shane to spend the rest of his life with an ex-convict like Eliza Sutton?"
"First of all, the Mistress did indeed make a mistake and served time in prison. But from the moment she was released, she was no longer a criminal. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone deserves a chance to reform. Secondly, as you said yourself, President Lockwood is brilliant and wise. He has his own reasons for choosing his life partner. I’m just a humble secretary, so it’s not my place to comment."
Brenda Preston was furious. "Fine! I see now. You’ve been bought off by that vixen Eliza Sutton too! Just you wait! You’ll pay for this!"
Brenda Preston stormed off.
Erik Irvine couldn’t help but shake his head.
’Brenda Preston was so fixated on Eliza Sutton’s time in prison that she failed to notice how exceptional Eliza herself was. And if President Lockwood’s suspicions were correct—if Eliza Sutton was truly who they thought she was—then there was no part of her identity that wasn’t a perfect match for him.’
’And even if she wasn’t that person...’ 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
’The fact that Eliza Sutton had won over the young master already put her leagues ahead of everyone else.’
’As for the crime she was convicted of, anyone with eyes could see what really happened.’
’They were just taking advantage of the fact that Eliza Sutton was young and motherless at the time.’
For some reason, Erik Irvine was suddenly reminded of a video he’d once seen online.
In the video, a little kid asked his grandmother, "Grandma, when I wet my pants, nobody gets mad at me. But when you wet your pants, why does everyone get mad at you?"
His grandmother replied, "Because my mommy isn’t here anymore."
...
Brenda Preston gripped her phone and dialed a number.
RING... RING... RING—
She waited for the call to be answered.
Brenda Preston began to pace anxiously. ’Come on, pick up. Pick up.’
Finally—
"Hello, Brenda. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
A crisp, pleasant voice came through the line.
A smile spread across Brenda Preston’s face. "I called because I miss you, of course. Don’t you miss me too, Pearl?"
"Of course I do! I’ve missed you so, so much, Brenda," Pearl Lockwood said, her voice full of affection.
After they exchanged a few pleasantries, Brenda Preston got straight to the point. "Pearl, about the dress for your coming-of-age ceremony—your mother had previously instructed the design department to create a custom gown for you."
"Is it Reina Miles and Dulcie Vaughn designing my gown again?" In previous years, her gowns had always been designed by those two head designers.
"Dulcie Vaughn is, but Reina Miles isn’t. Reina was kicked out of the Lockwood Group." Brenda Preston then gave her a brief summary of what had happened.
She placed the bulk of the blame on Eliza Sutton.
In Brenda’s telling, Eliza Sutton was a deeply manipulative and ruthless woman who would stop at nothing to get ahead.
Pearl Lockwood frowned. "With a troublemaker like that around, things must be tough for you, Brenda."
"I don’t mind the extra work. I’m more worried about you. To think your coming-of-age gown is going to be designed by a criminal."
Pearl Lockwood: "What? A criminal?"
"Did I forget to mention? This Eliza Sutton just got out after serving five years in prison. Oh, and the only reason she got into the Lockwood Group is thanks to Shane. Back when he was critically ill and in a coma, she was the bride Master Lockwood had him marry for good luck."
"What? A good-luck bride? And an ex-convict? How is a filthy creature like that worthy of entering our Lockwood family, let alone designing my coming-of-age gown!"
Pearl Lockwood had been abroad for the past year, during which the Lockwood family had suffered its recent misfortunes. Furthermore, Shane Lockwood had taken special care to shield her, so she had remained completely untouched by the turmoil.
Her personality still held all the unchecked pride and arrogance of the Lockwood family’s "Little Princess."
Hearing Pearl Lockwood’s furious voice, Brenda Preston couldn’t help but smile. Though she spoke words of appeasement, she was actually just fanning the flames.
As expected, Pearl Lockwood exploded. "Just wait! I’m coming back to put that little bitch in her place! Who the hell does she think she is, daring to act so brazenly in our family’s home!"
Staring at the disconnected call, a smirk played on Brenda Preston’s lips.
’Eliza Sutton is finished!’
「That evening.」
「The Sanatorium.」
When Erik Irvine saw Eliza Sutton get out of a taxi, he immediately hurried over to greet her.
"Doctor, you came. I thought..."
"Thought what?"
"I thought you weren’t coming back."
Eliza Sutton replied, "The Ghost Doctor never breaks her word."
"Yes, of course, of course," Erik Irvine said, lightly slapping his own cheek. "Forgive my narrow-mindedness. Please, Doctor, don’t hold it against me."
As he spoke, Erik Irvine’s gaze was fixed on Eliza Sutton’s face, studying her inch by inch.
Eliza Sutton said, "You’re that curious about what’s under my mask? Should I take it off so you can check if I’ve swapped it for a new face?"
Erik Irvine flinched and quickly shook his head. "I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare." He paused, then added a bit of flattery. "I meant no offense. I’m just in awe that someone so young could possess such incredible skill. It’s truly amazing."
Eliza’s expression remained placid, unmoved by Erik Irvine’s praise.
By the time Eliza Sutton arrived at the treatment room, Shane Lockwood had already changed into loose-fitting clothing.
"You’re here."
His tone was casual, as if greeting a close friend.
If one ignored the probing look in his eyes, that is.
’This man’s scrutiny was more subtle than Erik Irvine’s, but he was far more difficult to handle.’
’Especially now that his energy had returned, handling him wouldn’t be so easy.’
So, Eliza Sutton took out her Golden Needles, disinfected them meticulously, and inserted them into Shane Lockwood’s acupoints. Just like that, those unsettling eyes of his closed.
