After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 125: Do You Want Me to Carry You?
After Eliza Sutton saw Mrs. Lockwood out, she found Minnie waiting outside her door.
"Mistress," Minnie greeted, her attitude even more respectful than before. "President Lockwood is waiting at the gate to take you to the office."
Eliza paused for a moment. "I understand."
Ten minutes later, Eliza took an electric cart to the main gate of the estate, where a black Bugatti Veyron was already waiting.
The window was down, and Shane Lockwood was leaning against it, his arm resting on the frame as he held a phone to his ear.
He was speaking fluent French, and from a distance, she could only faintly make out a few words.
Wisely, Eliza didn’t approach.
Suddenly, Shane’s gaze shifted to her. He quickly ended the call and looked at her. "What are you doing just standing there?"
Eliza said, "I saw you were on a call and didn’t want to interrupt."
Shane looked at Eliza. "I just got a call. My uncle and his family—all three of them—were found dangling from an overpass. I had Erik Irvine look into who did it, but he came up with nothing. So, Eliza... who do you think taught the second branch a lesson?"
Eliza heard it—Shane had called her by her first name, Eliza.
The name felt far too intimate, especially between her and Shane. It just didn’t feel right.
She was lost in thought for a moment. When she looked up, Shane’s gaze was fixed on her, his eyes full of scrutiny.
’He was testing her again.’
Eliza put on a surprised expression. "Someone taught the second branch a lesson? I don’t know who did it, but they did a fantastic job."
Her voice was laced with undisguised glee.
"You hate the second branch that much?"
"Shouldn’t I?" Eliza said. "From the very first night I married into this family to ward off bad luck, Fabian has had improper intentions toward me. He kept harassing me even after you woke up. You’re intelligent and magnanimous; you know he’s up to no good and won’t be provoked by him. But not everyone is like you. If anyone had seen him, my reputation would be completely destroyed. I’d have no place left in all of Seabourne. When Fabian has gone out of his way to harm me like this, of course I’m happy to see him suffer."
"Fair enough." Shane nodded, then added after a moment, "You didn’t seem surprised to see me yesterday."
Eliza looked baffled. "What was there to be surprised about? That you’re still alive?" She let out a small laugh. "If it’s about that, then no, I really wasn’t surprised. You’re Yama Lockwood, after all. The King of Hell isn’t so easily killed, is he?"
Suddenly, a bottle of water was offered to her. Eliza took it, thanking him instinctively. "Thank you."
"Don’t mention it," Shane said. "It must have been difficult, thinking up such a long-winded excuse to brush me off. You’ve worked hard. Have a drink, wet your throat."
"PFFT."
Eliza choked. With Shane calling her out so bluntly, it was getting very difficult to play dumb.
"But I really do have to thank you for what you did for Emmett."
"Don’t mention it. But truth be told, Emmett would have been fine even without my help." Eliza truly believed this.
’Since Shane was alive and knew the second branch harbored ill intentions, there was no way he would have overlooked Emmett’s safety.’
’She had just been too panicked at the time to think of that.’
"So, how do you know Sid Lane?" Shane continued. "And don’t tell me you just ran into him. Sid Lane is cold and aloof. His favorite pastime is staying out of other people’s business. He would never have gone out of his way to help you save Emmett."
"..."
’So that’s what this is about,’ Eliza thought. ’Shane didn’t want to drive to the office with me because it was on his way, nor did he have a sudden change of heart about me after yesterday. This was all just a pretext to get me in this car and interrogate me.’
’She’d lost count of how many times he had tested her just since she’d gotten in the car.’
’She was being as vigilant as possible, and she had still almost fallen for his traps several times.’
’This was just impossible.’
’Eliza’s resolve hardened. Divorce. She had to get a divorce.’
So Eliza said, "Perhaps it’s because I saved Sid Lane’s life once, just like I saved Master Willow. I never expected that a moment of kindness would lead to such a great blessing. It just goes to show that good deeds are rewarded. Don’t you agree, Mr. Lockwood?"
"I suppose so." Shane didn’t press her any further.
Soon, the car stopped in front of The Lockwood Group building.
Eliza stared in disbelief. "President Lockwood, you’re not really going to make me walk in from here, are you?"
"You want me to carry you in?"
"No." Eliza took a deep breath. "If I get out of your car right here, I’ll be drowned in gossip by noon. President Lockwood, do you want to be hearing rumors about the two of us everywhere you go?"
"No," Shane said. "But we are husband and wife. Once that’s public, there won’t be any gossip."
"..."
’She’d rather have the gossip!’
Eliza took another deep breath. "Mr. Lockwood, you said you wanted to thank me earlier, didn’t you? Does that offer still stand?"
"It does not." Shane met her gaze, his lips curling into a smirk. "The offer has expired."
"..."
’This infuriating man!’
Perhaps sensing Eliza’s simmering rage, Shane finally showed a sliver of mercy. "Drive to the underground parking garage."
「In the underground parking garage.」
Brenda Preston, who had been waiting for quite some time, saw Shane’s car approaching from a distance. She hastily reapplied her lipstick, grabbed her purse, and quickly pushed her own car door open.
"Shane..."
Brenda Preston broke into a sweet smile upon seeing Shane. She was just about to approach him when she saw Eliza Sutton step out of the car.
The smile on Brenda Preston’s face instantly froze.
She stared at Shane in disbelief.
’Wasn’t Shane supposed to hate that bride of his, the one he married for luck? Why would he let her ride in the same car?’
’It had to be Eliza’s doing!’
’That little slut is always seducing men!’
At that moment, Brenda Preston wanted nothing more than to tear Eliza to shreds.
Eliza shivered. She felt completely wronged but knew she couldn’t explain. She couldn’t just say that Shane had invited her into the car, then deliberately distracted her to prevent her from getting out sooner.
’To Brenda, how would that sound any different from bragging?’
Eliza suddenly felt a certain phrase perfectly captured her mood.
’My heart aches, but my lips are sealed.’
Eliza quickly said, "Mr. Lockwood, I’ll let you get to your work. I’m heading back to the design department."
With that, she scurried away.
Brenda Preston took a deep breath, forcing an incredibly sweet smile back onto her face. "Shane, good morning."
Shane’s brow furrowed into a deep line. "Manager Preston, if I’m not mistaken, I’ve reminded you before that this is a place of business. Please address me as President Lockwood." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Brenda bit her lip, indignant. "But Eliza Sutton didn’t call you President Lockwood just now! She called you Mr. Lockwood!"
’What an act! She just knows how to shamelessly seduce men like some kind of vixen!’
Shane looked at Brenda’s resentful expression, feeling a bit exasperated. "Eliza may just be a junior designer in the design department," he said, "but she is also my legally wedded wife. Never mind ’Mr. Lockwood’—if she were to call me ’honey,’ I would have to answer to it."
