Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Eliza Sutton Was Sent Back by the Lockwood Family

"Oh, I forgot to mention. Our Madam Lockwood is none other than Eliza Sutton. Earlier today at the bar, Master Willow was shouting about taking her away."

The color instantly drained from Chairman Willow’s face. He was so frightened he nearly collapsed.

He frantically waved his hands. "A misunderstanding. This is all a misunderstanding. My son would have to have a death wish to harbor any ill intentions toward Madam Lockwood."

Erik Irvine smiled, the very picture of a smiling tiger. "Is Chairman Willow suggesting I’m lying? Or do you believe President Lockwood is deliberately trying to cause trouble for you?"

"Of course not, of course not!" Chairman Willow was frightened out of his wits.

The Willow Family had gained significant momentum in recent years, even being hailed as the foremost of the new-money elite. But compared to a behemoth like the Lockwood Family, they were still leagues behind! 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"Secretary Irvine, this really is a misunderstanding. Please, put in a good word for me with President Lockwood. I swear, tomorrow I’ll bring that unfilial son of mine to kneel and beg for Madam Lockwood’s forgiveness."

Chairman Willow produced a black card and pressed it into Erik Irvine’s hand. "Secretary Irvine, please, speak favorably on my behalf to President Lockwood about this."

Erik Irvine made a show of refusing before finally pocketing the card.

"Chairman Willow is such a reasonable man. Under your leadership, the Willow Family is sure to grow ever more prosperous."

Chairman Willow respectfully saw Erik Irvine out. He then let out a long sigh and collapsed into his chair as if his bones had turned to jelly. Only then did he realize his back was drenched in a cold sweat.

Susan Lancaster’s brow furrowed. "Another one sticking up for that Eliza Sutton. She’s really something else, getting so many men to come to her defense in a single night."

Ivan Willow complained, "Dad, what is wrong with you? How could you be so spineless and agree to apologize? Well, I’m not going. I can’t take that kind of humiliation..."

Hearing this, Chairman Willow’s patience finally snapped. He slapped his son across the face. "Shut up!"

Susan Lancaster immediately lunged forward. Her heart ached seeing the red, swollen mark on her son’s face, and she couldn’t stop herself from screaming at her husband. "What are you doing? Why would you hit him out of nowhere? Look at his face! How is he supposed to be seen in public now!"

"How can he be seen in public? It would be better if he was too ashamed to be seen at all!" Chairman Willow said, panting heavily. "Don’t you understand? The woman he was harassing is Shane Lockwood’s wife!"

Susan Lancaster retorted, "So what if she’s Shane Lockwood’s wife? Everyone knows she’s just an unfavored bride he married for luck! And as for Shane... I’ll admit he used to be impressive, but he’s a cripple now! A cripple! Even if he’s clinging to the president’s seat on the fumes of his former glory, what good can he do? He’ll probably be ousted any day now!"

Chairman Willow was so enraged he couldn’t breathe, nearly fainting on the spot.

"Darling!" Susan Lancaster was a little frightened. "You... you need to calm down! You can’t get angry with your high blood pressure!"

"I’m trying not to be angry, but how can I stay calm when I see you two acting like you have a death wish?"

"Darling, just take your time. Tell me slowly."

Chairman Willow took a deep breath. "Yes, you think Eliza Sutton is just some unfavored bride he married for luck. But no matter how out of favor she is, she is still Madam Lockwood of the Lockwood Family. As long as she holds that title, no one has the right to treat her with disrespect, to say nothing of Ivan harassing her!

"And as for Shane Lockwood... yes, his legs are crippled, but you must understand something: a wounded beast is still a beast. His injury might even make him more dangerous. I do not want the Willow Family to be the first victim he uses to prove his fangs are still sharp!"

Susan Lancaster hesitated. "Is he really that dangerous?"

The moment the words left her mouth, she saw her husband about to erupt again and quickly added, "You’re right, you’re absolutely right. First thing in the morning, I’ll go pick out a gift myself. I’ll go with you and offer a sincere apology to Madam Lockwood. I’ll make sure she’s no longer angry."

As she spoke, she shot Ivan Willow a meaningful look.

Ivan Willow was a dutiful son, so no matter how reluctant he was, he nodded in agreement.

"Fine, fine, fine! I’ll apologize. I’ll keep apologizing until that woman is satisfied, how about that?"

...

Just before going to sleep, Eliza Sutton received a call from Saul Reynolds.

"Boss, it’s handled. Ivan Willow won’t be bothering you again. However, I don’t think the identity of ’Benefactor Innis’ is enough to truly intimidate the Willows."

In the eyes of a sly old fox like Chairman Willow, profit is king. Even the debt of saving a life would have to take a backseat.

Eliza Sutton wasn’t surprised in the least. She said dismissively, "As long as that illegitimate son of the Willow Family stops making trouble, it’s fine."

In the Lockwood Family, she was just a bride married for luck. Her only wish was to live out the next two months in peace.

"By the way, Boss, we saw Erik Irvine on our way out. It looked like he was also heading to that Willow playboy’s hospital room."

Eliza Sutton paused, a little surprised. ’I didn’t expect Shane Lockwood to send Erik Irvine to intervene.’

"I see."

Eliza Sutton added, "Do some digging for me. Find out who Ivan Willow met with before this. In other words, who pointed him in my direction."

Saul Reynolds paused for a second before immediately agreeing.

After ending the call, Eliza Sutton tapped a goshawk icon on her phone. She replied to a few messages, and then a text from Saul Reynolds came in.

Before coming after her, Ivan Willow had met with Amelia Sutton.

Amelia Sutton.

Eliza Sutton’s fingertip stroked the two words on the screen. She wasn’t surprised at all.

’My dear stepsister,’ she thought, ’always worried I’m not dying fast enough.’

’But since my stepsister is so *enthusiastic*, so *friendly* toward me, it would be ungrateful not to return the favor.’

"Eliza Sutton!"

A voice called from the room.

Eliza Sutton put her phone away, suppressed the cold glint in her eyes, and schooled her features into their usual placid expression before re-entering the room.

"Mr. Lockwood, did you need something?"

Shane Lockwood frowned, clearly displeased. "Get in bed. Time to sleep."

Eliza Sutton hesitated, reasonably suspecting that Shane Lockwood had... unspeakable intentions.

Shane Lockwood read her expression and grew furious. "Are you doing this on purpose? Trying to make Mrs. Chandler think I kicked you out so my mother will come to your rescue?"

"Absolutely not!" Eliza Sutton said with such sincerity she practically raised a hand to swear an oath.

Shane Lockwood scoffed, making his disbelief clear.

Shane Lockwood said coldly, "Get in this bed and go to sleep!"

The rest of the night passed in silence.

「The next day」

Early in the morning, Harrison Sutton received a message.

Eliza Sutton had provoked the young master of the Willow Family at a bar the previous night, kicking him and causing serious injuries.

Harrison Sutton’s brows furrowed deeply. "What is Eliza thinking? How could she just resort to violence like that?"

Mae Sheffield sneered. "Eliza Sutton has always been reckless. It’s not surprising she would provoke Ivan Willow. Harrison, if you want to protect the Sutton Family, you’d better disown her, and quickly!"

Harrison Sutton said, displeased, "It’s hardly serious enough to disown her. Eliza is now..."

"Yes, she’s Madam Lockwood."

Mae Sheffield cut Harrison Sutton off with a cold laugh. "She is Madam Lockwood, true, but it’s a title in name only. Do you really think the Lockwood Family would offend the Willow Family for her sake?"

Just then, Butler Sheffield came to report. "Sir, Madam, the Lockwoods have sent Eliza Sutton back!"
