After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 58: Eliza Sutton Princess-Carries Shane Lockwood
Eliza Sutton couldn’t help but smile.
Shane Lockwood frowned slightly. "What are you smiling about?"
Eliza said sincerely, "I’m smiling at how clever I am."
’Thank goodness.’
’I didn’t fall for Shane Lockwood just because he showed me some occasional kindness. Otherwise, my heart would be breaking right now.’
Eliza’s expression turned serious. "Mr. Lockwood, please rest assured. I will handle this matter properly and ensure it doesn’t implicate the Lockwood Group."
Just as Eliza finished speaking and turned to leave, a shrill voice screamed from behind her.
"Eliza Sutton!"
Eliza instinctively turned and saw a disheveled woman charging at her, clutching a suspicious bottle.
A chill went down Eliza’s spine. She tried to dodge, but it was too late.
The woman had planned this thoroughly, giving Eliza no chance to escape.
As the liquid flew toward her face, Eliza saw a crazed, twisted glee in the woman’s eyes.
Just then, a powerful force pulled her back.
The next second, Eliza was pressed into a warm embrace, her senses filled with the man’s crisp, pleasant, cedar-like scent.
It was followed by a muffled groan.
Erik Irvine shouted, "President Lockwood!"
Eliza quickly pulled away from Shane Lockwood’s arms. She then saw that the back of his shirt had been corroded, and the exposed skin was a mangled, bloody mess.
An indescribable smell hung in the air.
Eliza knew it was the smell of sulfuric acid eating away at flesh.
"Quick, get President Lockwood to the hospital!"
Erik’s voice snapped Eliza back to her senses. She immediately reached for the wheelchair, but Shane grabbed her wrist.
The pain in his back had drained all the color from Shane’s handsome face, contorting his features. His palm, gripping her wrist, was damp with sweat.
Shane frowned. "Idiot! There’s acid on the wheelchair. Do you want to lose your hands?"
Shane’s words finally brought Eliza completely to her senses. She took a deep breath. "I understand."
Shane was about to tell Eliza to stay close, but she pulled her hand free from his grasp.
The next moment, Shane felt his whole body go light as Eliza lifted him into her arms.
Bridal style, no less.
"Eliza Sutton!" A vein throbbed on Shane’s temple, his face darkening. "What are you doing?"
"I know you’re in pain." Eliza’s tone was exceptionally gentle, as if she were coaxing Emmett Lockwood. "Just be good. I’ll get you to the hospital to have your wound treated right away."
Shane: "..."
"Put me down!"
"Okay, okay, I’ll put you down in a bit." Eliza looked at Erik. "Is the car ready?"
"It’s... it’s ready..." Erik answered instinctively.
For some reason, at that moment, Erik felt as if it were Shane Lockwood who had just spoken.
Eliza, unaware of Erik’s thoughts, paused as she passed Reina Miles, who was now pinned to the ground by security, struggling and screaming wildly. Eliza’s gaze was ice-cold.
"You ruined me! It’s all your fault, Eliza Sutton! You’re the one who did this to me! I won’t let this go!" Reina’s voice was sharp and shrill, the hatred in it enough to make one’s hair stand on end.
Reina Miles hated Eliza Sutton to the bone.
At her young age, she had already been the lead designer of the Lockwood Design Department. Everyone looked up to her because of her position, and she was the pride of her family.
According to the original trajectory of her life, she should have continued to live so glamorously and respectably.
But everything was ruined because of Eliza’s appearance.
She was branded a plagiarist, fired by the Lockwood Group, and blacklisted in the industry. She became a pariah. Forget big companies; even small, fledgling studios wouldn’t hire her.
In the end, she could only find work waiting tables.
But just the day before yesterday, even her waitressing job was taken by someone else.
Having reached this point, Reina couldn’t hold it together any longer. Her hatred for Eliza peaked in an instant.
Her mind was consumed by a single thought: ’Ruin Eliza Sutton! I have to ruin Eliza Sutton!’
"You deserve it!"
Eliza said coldly, then walked away with Shane in her arms without a second glance at Reina.
「At the hospital.」
Shane, lying face down on a gurney, was wheeled into the operating room.
Eliza instinctively tried to follow but was stopped by a nurse.
"Family must wait outside."
The doors to the operating room SLAMMED shut.
Eliza stared blankly at the red light that illuminated above the door, taking a long moment to process everything.
’Right, I’m just Eliza Sutton now.’
’The lucky girl from the Sutton family who’d been to prison and then married into the Lockwood family to ward off bad luck.’
"Shane! Shane!"
Mrs. Lockwood cried out as she stumbled toward them.
Usually such an elegant and poised lady, she was now disheveled from running in a panic, her gentle face filled with terror.
"Eliza, how is Shane?"
"Mr. Lockwood had sulfuric acid thrown on his back. He’s seriously injured, but it’s not life-threatening."
Mrs. Lockwood let out a long sigh of relief. The tension that had gripped her snapped, and she could no longer stand, her legs giving way as she collapsed to the floor.
"Mom!"
Startled, Eliza rushed over to help Mrs. Lockwood up. "Are you all right?"
"I’m fine." Mrs. Lockwood managed a small, slightly embarrassed smile. "I was just so scared."
Just moments before, Mrs. Lockwood had been walking with Master Lockwood when she heard about Shane’s accident. Her mind went completely blank. She didn’t even have time to say a word before she rushed out, stumbling all the way.
Eliza said apologetically, "Mr. Lockwood was trying to save me. If you’re going to blame someone, please blame me."
Mrs. Lockwood was very surprised. "Why would I blame you? You are Shane’s wife. It’s only right that he saved you."
"Mom." Eliza hadn’t expected Mrs. Lockwood to say that and stared at her, stunned.
Mrs. Lockwood patted her hand.
「Two hours later.」
Shane Lockwood was wheeled out.
He was still unconscious, the pain leaving his handsome face pale.
His jaw seemed sharper, making the contours of his face look even more defined and striking.
Eliza kept watch by Shane’s bedside, gazing at him in a daze.
’She knew, of course, that Shane Lockwood didn’t like her.’
’Their marriage had begun as a way to ward off misfortune—or more accurately, it was a transaction. He had never even hidden his intention to get rid of her.’
’And yet, he had saved her.’
It was hard for Eliza to describe what she was feeling.
Suddenly, her wrist was seized.
Sometime while she was lost in thought, Shane had opened his eyes. He stared at Eliza sharply. "What do you think you’re doing?"
Only then did Eliza realize she had been reaching out to touch Shane’s face.
She startled herself and quickly stammered, "I... I was swatting a mosquito for you..."
As she spoke, she brought her hand down with a SLAP against his handsome face.
Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open.
Mrs. Lockwood stood in the doorway.
Eliza quickly explained, "Mom, I was just swatting a mosquito for Mr. Lockwood."
’I definitely wasn’t abusing him.’
’Mostly because I wouldn’t dare.’
Mrs. Lockwood hummed in acknowledgment, her expression complicated and utterly indescribable as she looked at the two of them.
