After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 63: I’ll Let You Be a Concubine
Eliza Sutton raised her hand and grabbed Brenda Preston’s wrist, her tone cold. "Manager Preston, you’re the head of the design department, born into a wealthy family and highly educated. How can you act like a common shrew, always trying to slap people?"
"You dare to run your mouth like that, and you think I shouldn’t slap you?"
"What nonsense?" Eliza Sutton’s gaze turned glacial. "That you’re lusting after Shane Lockwood? Manager Preston, have you forgotten that he and I are married? Whether he loves me or not, he’s my husband. I am the rightful Mrs. Lockwood. As for you..."
Eliza Sutton’s tone was scornful. "You don’t even qualify to be his mistress!"
Brenda Preston flew into a rage. "Eliza Sutton, you’ve got a lot of nerve, putting on airs as the wife in front of me! Have you forgotten your place?"
With that, she raised her hand to slap Eliza again.
With a flick of her wrist, Eliza sent Brenda stumbling backward until she slammed against the wall.
Eliza lifted her chin slightly, sneering. "You know, Brenda Preston, I really don’t think you’re very bright. If you were, you’d be trying to get on my good side. You can forget about the title of Mrs. Lockwood, but a position as his other woman... that’s not impossible."
Brenda was livid. "You’re telling me to be his mistress! Eliza Sutton, how dare you!"
"I do dare. As Mrs. Lockwood, I’m already being extremely generous. Think it over!"
After speaking, Eliza opened the office door. The moment she saw who was standing outside, she froze.
It was Erik Irvine and, sitting in a wheelchair, Shane Lockwood.
Shane Lockwood’s handsome face was devoid of expression, his eyes boring into Eliza with an oppressive intensity.
Erik Irvine, however, looked thoroughly impressed, stopping just short of giving her a thumbs-up.
The expression on Eliza’s face froze solid. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
’Can someone please tell me why the two men who were just making headlines everywhere are suddenly back?’
"Get over here!"
Eliza didn’t move. When Shane glared at her, she quickly explained, "President Lockwood, you’re the center of attention. If I’m seen with you, it’ll draw all eyes to us, and that wouldn’t be good for me."
Shane Lockwood was at a loss for words.
’This was the first time anyone had ever claimed that being seen with him was a bad thing!’
"Enough..."
Before he could finish, his wheelchair spun around. Eliza pressed a button, and the chair shot forward with a WHOOSH.
Erik jumped in shock and hurried after them. "President Lockwood!"
By the time Erik caught up, Shane had already regained control of the wheelchair.
He risked a peek and saw that President Lockwood’s expression looked like it might crack. His face was as black as thunder, looking like he might erupt at any second.
Erik clamped his mouth shut and slowed his breathing, terrified that even the sound of his inhales would annoy Shane and provoke his titanic fury.
Shane was indeed furious enough to kill someone. No one had ever dared to treat him the way Eliza had. She was the absolute first.
After Shane went into his office, Eliza only showed up over ten minutes later.
"President Lockwood, rest assured. Hardly anyone saw us, so there won’t be any misunderstandings."
"Is that so?" Shane sneered. "If I hadn’t heard you lording your status as Madam Lockwood over Brenda Preston with my own ears, I might have actually believed you."
Eliza glanced at Shane and asked hesitantly, "President Lockwood, are you upset?"
"What do you think?"
Eliza looked bewildered. "But why would you be upset? Brenda Preston is attractive, sure, but her disposition is mediocre. She’s not a suitable match."
"Then who is a suitable match for me? You?"
Eliza quickly waved her hands. "No, no, no, not me."
Realizing her denial had been too eager, almost sounding disdainful, she quickly tried to recover. "I mean, President Lockwood deserves someone better."
Seeing Shane still staring at her, she hesitated for a moment before saying, "Since you like her, President Lockwood, how about I call Brenda Preston and ask her to come take care of you today?"
With that, Eliza took out her phone.
Shane immediately grabbed Eliza’s wrist. A glance showed him that the number she was about to dial was, in fact, Brenda Preston’s.
’She actually wasn’t bluffing.’
This was unexpected. Shane looked at Eliza with new eyes, a sudden question on his lips. "Eliza Sutton, what is it you’re trying to do? What do you really want?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Maybe I’m feeling generous and want to grant your wish."
"Oh." Eliza fell silent for a moment before saying in a distant, hollow voice, "I want the most precious thing in the world."
’Leo, Theo.’
’Her two children.’
’The treasures she would do anything and everything to find.’
Eliza quickly reined in her emotions and smiled. "Mr. Lockwood, you really don’t have to worry about what I’m trying to do. It’s not important. All you have to do is stand your ground and not let me succeed."
Shane didn’t speak, merely watched her.
Eliza spoke again. "Mr. Lockwood, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way. It wouldn’t do for someone to see me here."
With that, Eliza turned and left.
She had just stepped out of the president’s office when Brenda Preston blocked her path.
Brenda’s eyes were red-rimmed, her gaze filled with undisguised hatred for Eliza. "I underestimated you, Eliza Sutton. You’re quite the schemer, very good at seduction. But don’t get cocky. A man like Shane Lockwood is beyond your wildest dreams."
"Oh," Eliza replied nonchalantly. "In that case, I’ll stop dreaming. You go right ahead and dream all you want. Do your best to work your way up from being his other woman to becoming Mrs. Lockwood. Good luck!"
Eliza swore that every word she said was from the heart, but Brenda looked like she was about to explode with rage.
"Eliza Sutton!"
Eliza was speechless.
’Was I wrong to encourage her?’
Brenda suddenly laughed. "Eliza Sutton, Miss Lockwood’s coming-of-age party is happening soon, and Mrs. Lockwood has tasked the design department with creating her gown. We’ll make this your final evaluation. If Miss Lockwood chooses your design, you will become the chief designer of the Lockwood Group’s design department, and no one will ever question you again. If you fail, you are to leave the design department and are forbidden from ever rejoining. So, Eliza Sutton, do you dare to make this wager?"
"I’m not making that bet."
"Are you scared, Eliza Sutton? Are you admitting that you only won first place by using some devious, underhanded trick to produce that design?"
"The matter of the designs is perfectly clear, so there’s no need to keep dragging it up. It’s pointless. I’m not agreeing because I’m not an idiot. If I lose, I have to leave the department. But if you lose, what are the consequences for you? Why should I agree to that? If you want to bet with me, you need to at least put your manager position on the line. That would make things interesting, wouldn’t it?"
"I knew it, Eliza Sutton! You do have ulterior motives!"
Eliza was growing impatient. "Manager Preston, if this is all you have to worry about all day, then please get out of my way. I have to get to work."
Eliza started to walk away as she spoke.
"Fine, I agree," Brenda declared. "Eliza Sutton, this time, I swear I’ll be the one to drive you out of The Lockwood Group for good!"
