After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 92: Abandoned Wife
Harrison Sutton said sheepishly, "But we’re still father and daughter. The ties of blood are something that can never be severed."
"Mr. Sutton, if you have something to say, just say it. There’s no need to play these roundabout games."
"Fine, I’ll be direct. Eliza, you have to save me this time! You have to save the Sutton Group!"
Eliza Sutton frowned. "What’s wrong with the Sutton Group?"
Ever since receiving the bride price from the Lockwood family, the Sutton Group had turned its fortunes around and had been flourishing.
Harrison Sutton’s face was a picture of misery. "The Lockwood Group built a martyrs’ cemetery on their land by Mount Sable!"
Eliza Sutton was stunned for a moment before it dawned on her.
The Lockwood Group’s plot at Mount Sable was right next to the Sutton family’s land. The area was beautiful, with excellent development prospects. Logically, any project built there was guaranteed to be a cash cow.
Now that the Lockwood Group had donated the land and turned it into a martyrs’ cemetery, the high-end community the Sutton Group was building had gone from a hot property to completely deserted overnight.
A strange feeling flickered through Eliza Sutton’s mind.
’I want to believe this was Shane Lockwood’s own doing and has nothing to do with me, but I can’t shake the feeling that it does.’
Eliza scoffed. "How considerate of the Lockwood Group. With a martyrs’ cemetery nearby, everyone can sleep soundly, without having to worry about any nasty things bumping in the night. Congratulations, Mr. Sutton. Your properties just gained another selling point. I’m sure they’ll sell out in no time."
Harrison Sutton’s face twitched. He hadn’t expected Eliza to say that. "Eliza, stop joking around. Even if it’s a martyrs’ cemetery, it’s still a cemetery. Who would want to buy a house next to that!"
"That’s true. Why don’t you just follow Shane Lockwood’s lead and donate your land as well? Letting the martyrs have a place to rest would be an act of immeasurable virtue."
"Eliza Sutton! Do you have any idea what you’re saying?"
"I’m simply advising Mr. Sutton to do a good deed. Even if you’re unwilling, Mr. Sutton, there’s no need to get angry. If word of this got out, people might think you have something against the martyrs."
"Eliza Sutton!" Harrison Sutton was furious. "Must you be so heartless? You’re a daughter of the Sutton family! What good would it do you if the family goes bankrupt?"
"You’re mistaken, Mr. Sutton. The Sutton family flourishing does me no good either. On the contrary, if it goes bankrupt, at least I’ll get some entertainment out of it."
Harrison Sutton swung his hand at Eliza’s face.
Eliza raised a hand and caught his wrist. "Mr. Sutton, you really should kick this habit of slapping people. If I were to press charges for intentional assault, not only would you be unable to escape punishment, but you’d drag the Sutton Group down with you. I imagine the company’s situation would only get worse."
With that, she flung Harrison Sutton’s hand away.
Harrison Sutton staggered back a couple of steps before catching his balance. He pointed a trembling finger at Eliza. "Eliza Sutton! How dare you! Even if you’ve forgotten I’m your father, have you forgotten your mother as well? Aren’t you afraid I’ll dig up her ashes and deny her peace even in death?"
Eliza gave a cold laugh. "Given everything you’ve done, my mother can hardly be resting in peace as it is! As for digging up her ashes..."
She smiled. "It seems Mr. Sutton has been very busy lately. You’re completely unaware that the cemetery has changed owners. I’m the owner now. Instead of thinking about digging up my mother’s ashes, you should probably start thinking about where you’ll be buried when your time comes!"
The Sutton family was not an old, established line, so they couldn’t afford a private family cemetery like the Lockwoods. Spirit Mountain Cemetery, where her mother was buried, was widely rumored to have excellent feng shui.
So, Harrison Sutton had spent a great deal of money to buy a plot in Spirit Mountain Cemetery to serve as the Sutton family’s foundation. He had once publicly declared that after he and Mae Sheffield passed away, they would both be buried in that auspicious plot to bless the Sutton family for a century to come.
She had wanted to get her hands on Spirit Mountain Cemetery ever since she was released from prison.
She didn’t want to be threatened by Harrison Sutton over her mother’s grave anymore, but unfortunately, the cemetery’s owner refused to sell. Just when she thought she’d have to find another way, Shane Lockwood delivered the contract into her hands.
She knew this was Shane Lockwood’s way of thanking her for saving Emmett.
Even though she had only saved Emmett because of her own two unfortunate children, she wasn’t about to stubbornly refuse his gesture.
The color drained from Harrison Sutton’s face. "I already bought that plot! So what if you own the cemetery now? Are you going to break the contract?"
"Yes. I can."
"Eliza Sutton!"
"Harrison Sutton."
Eliza called him by his full name, the smile fading from her face to be replaced by a sharp, severe look. "When are you going to get it through your head? I’m no longer the same Eliza Sutton you can push around and manipulate as you please!"
A jolt of fear shot through Harrison Sutton, and he stumbled back, collapsing onto the sofa.
Eliza chuckled. "Do be careful, Mr. Sutton. If you hurt yourself, I’d have to cover your medical expenses."
"Eliza Sutton, don’t get cocky! I was the one who got you into the Lockwood family, and I can just as easily drag you out! When you’re an abandoned wife, we’ll see who you can turn to for help!"
Eliza regarded Harrison Sutton’s resentful expression without a word.
Harrison Sutton thought he had scared her. "Eliza Sutton, you still have a chance to change your mind."
"I finally understand why the once-flourishing Sutton Group went downhill day after day after my mother died. It’s because you were the one at the helm."
’Foolish, selfish, greedy, pig-headed.’
That was why a man like him would never understand that the Eliza Sutton of today no longer needed to rely on anyone.
"Eliza Sutton!"
"Show him out!" Eliza Sutton called out.
Minnie immediately came over. "Mr. Sutton, this way, please."
"Even if I’ve wronged you in the past, I’m still your father! Why are you doing this to me?" Harrison Sutton yelled as Minnie escorted him out.
Eliza Sutton sat on the sofa, a melancholy look on her face.
Though she had finally torn away all pretenses with Harrison Sutton, he was still her father.
"Mama." Suddenly, a small hand wiped her cheek. "Don’t cry."
Eliza Sutton snapped back to reality. Seeing the glistening wetness on Emmett Lockwood’s little hand, she realized she had been crying.
Eliza Sutton gave an apologetic smile. "Emmett, I’m sorry you had to see that."
"As long as I’m with you, Mama, everything is perfect." Emmett Lockwood hugged Eliza. "I’m here, Mama. I’ll always protect you."
"Okay." Eliza’s heart melted completely. She hugged Emmett for a moment, then suddenly said, "Emmett, let’s go have some fun."
"We can go play another day, Mama," Emmett said with great consideration, not wanting her to feel troubled in the slightest.
"Silly boy. I’d be the fool if I changed my plans because of someone so insignificant. Come on, Emmett!" Eliza picked Emmett up and walked briskly out the door.
Emmett subconsciously wrapped his arms around Eliza’s neck. ’It was a different kind of warmth from his father’s, but warmth all the same.’
’This is so nice.’
’He had found his mama.’
Emmett Lockwood started to laugh, the sound clear and crisp. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
Mrs. Zimmerman sighed with emotion. "I’ve never seen the Young Master so happy."
"Is Emmett very happy with Eliza Sutton?" Shane Lockwood asked, wheeling himself out.
"Eldest Young Master." Mrs. Zimmerman immediately lowered her head.
Shane Lockwood said, "You haven’t answered my question."
Mrs. Zimmerman replied, "Yes. The Young Master is very happy."
Shane Lockwood withdrew his gaze and left without another word.
