After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 131: The One You Should Be Worried About Isn’t Me
I didn’t say anything, just waited until it got a little quieter outside, then gently pushed Henry Preston away, "The balcony door won’t close, can you help me try it?"
Henry Preston responded with an "Okay" and then went over to check.
The rain was still heavy, and the wind hadn’t stopped. After Henry Preston checked and closed the balcony door, his clothes were already soaked, and so was his hair.
Once the door was closed, the sound of the wind and rain outside diminished significantly. I went to get a dry towel for Henry Preston, "Thank you, you should wipe your hair."
Henry Preston took the towel and casually wiped his hair. His shirt was mostly wet on the right side, from the shoulder to the back waist. The damp fabric clung to his body, faintly revealing the muscles, which moved as he wiped his hair.
I silently withdrew my gaze, expecting him to leave after he finished wiping his hair.
"Why did you choose to live here alone?" Henry Preston suddenly asked me.
"It’s close to the company, and close to my uncle’s house," I replied simply.
"But this place isn’t very safe, and the facilities aren’t great," Henry Preston seemed dissatisfied with the residence.
I found it strange, "Then why did you move here?"
He was startled for a moment, then smirked, "For the same reason as you, it’s close to the company."
Since we were already chatting, I decided to ask something I wanted to know and sat down on the sofa, "How long is your project cycle here? When do you plan to go back?"
Henry Preston pondered for a moment and answered lightly, "It’s uncertain, but you really hope I return, don’t you? Rest assured, I won’t cling to you like some annoying plaster."
I couldn’t help but respond, "You once compared me to an annoying plaster."
The atmosphere suddenly became awkward, and the air felt tense. I didn’t mean to bring up the past; it just slipped out unconsciously.
Suddenly, Henry Preston’s gaze fell on a small bottle on the coffee table. He reached out to take it, but I quickly grabbed it first.
Suspicion flashed in his eyes, "What medication are you taking?"
It was the folic acid I was currently taking; I forgot to put it away after taking it earlier.
I clutched the small bottle in my palm, feeling a little tense, but pretended to be calm, "Just some vitamins that the hospital prescribed for me because I’m vitamin deficient."
"Let me see." Henry Preston extended his hand, his well-defined fingers looking quite appealing.
"No need, it’s my business, you don’t have to worry." I refused.
Henry Preston didn’t believe me, his brow furrowed into a frown, "Zoe Hathaway, give me the medication."
I got up and headed to the bedroom, "I’m going to sleep now, you should go back too; thanks for tonight’s help."
Henry Preston also got up and followed me. When I was about to close the bedroom door, he reached out to block it, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t close it.
I became a bit annoyed, "Henry Preston, let go!"
"Let me see the medication, it’s clearly not vitamins, I need to know your health situation." Henry Preston is taller than me, looking down with a stern expression.
"What does my health have to do with you? Let go, or don’t blame me for not being polite!" I had no other tricks to deal with Henry Preston, just biting and scratching.
I raised my hand, ready to scratch Henry Preston’s arm.
Henry Preston reacted quickly, pinning my hand, his face darkening, "Trying to scratch me again?"
"..." I gritted my teeth and answered, "Well, don’t use your strength to bully me!"
Hearing this, Henry Preston frowned even more, "How am I bullying you? I’m just concerned about your health."
I coldly replied, "I don’t need your concern, the person you should worry about is Azure."
Mentioning Azure, Henry Preston’s gaze deepened. After looking at me for a few seconds, he laughed self-mockingly, "You’re probably right, sleep tight, I’m heading out." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
He released his hand, and the resistance on the door disappeared immediately. Soon, the sound of the door opening and closing echoed in the living room. I stood at the empty doorway for a moment, sighed tiredly, and went back to bed.
At this moment, my phone vibrated—it was a call from Ivan Underwood. He asked, "Are you scared being home alone?"
"Mm, a little, but it’s okay now." I answered while checking my message notifications, realizing that he had called three or four times before and sent several messages, but I only saw them now.
On Ivan Underwood’s side, it was a bit noisy, unlike over at Henry Preston’s place.
He said, "I had an emergency at the hospital and just got back when it started pouring rain. If you’re scared, I’ll come over now."
"No need, your work is more important. I’m fine now, planning to go back to sleep." I quickly replied.
"Alright, sleep well." Ivan Underwood’s voice was steady.
After hanging up, I tossed and turned until dawn. In my current condition, I really shouldn’t be staying up late, but I couldn’t help thinking about all sorts of things.
I was a bit tired when I went to work the next day, almost forcing myself to stay focused.
Sherman Hathaway found me and said that Fern Tate was being transferred back to the Expansion Department.
"With her back, your workload will be much lighter. Zoe, health is more important than work, you know that, right?" Sherman Hathaway looked at my tired state with deep concern.
He only knows about Azure’s and my relationship, but not about Fern Tate’s and Azure’s relationship, so he agreed to have Fern Tate transferred back, which I can understand.
Besides, I do need someone to share the work, and Fern Tate is the best choice.
"Alright, I understand." I nodded.
In the afternoon, Fern Tate transferred back. She smiled and greeted everyone in the Expansion Department but lost her smile when she saw me.
I didn’t mind; ever since I found out about Fern Tate’s identity, I never thought of becoming friends with her.
Fern Tate’s seat was still next to mine. As she organized her files, she quietly asked me, "Azure has resigned now, are you satisfied?"
"Satisfied." I deliberately showed a smug smile, "Do you believe I have a way to get rid of you too?"
Fern Tate’s face stiffened, seemingly not expecting me to be so blatant. There was a hint of nervousness in her eyes; she seemed concerned that I might actually get rid of her as well. It’s not easy for her to reach her current position.
"Zoe Hathaway, you really act recklessly relying on your family background, no wonder Azure said she wants to break up with Henry Preston and give him back to you." Fern Tate finally regained her composure and replied with resentment.
I turned to look at Fern Tate. On closer inspection, she and Azure did seem to have a few similarities.
I felt no emotions toward this sarcasm, only hearing a hint of jealousy. I laughed, "Yeah, I’m just relying on my family to do whatever I want. If Azure’s family was comparable to mine, she would easily marry into The Preston Family, but unfortunately, she’s too lacking."
Fern Tate’s face flushed alternately between blue and white at my words, as if when I pitied Azure, I was also casting a shadow on her.
Back then, Winter Tate was also not accepted by The Preston Family because of her family background, and that’s quite a harsh reality.
