After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 156: I’m the One Who Refuses to Look Back
Who’s clinging to whom? Azure Vaughn’s skill at turning the tables is impressive.
Seeing Henry Preston protecting Azure like that, my heart felt calm; it was expected.
But I’ve lost interest in playing their game any longer.
I took out my phone, opened tonight’s news, and asked Henry, "Was this your doing?"
After Henry saw the content, his face quickly darkened, and he sharply glanced at Azure.
That look already told me who the instigator was.
Azure looked at Henry innocently, "Mr. Preston, what’s wrong? What happened?"
"It’s nothing," Henry replied indifferently.
"Did Azure send it out?" I felt truly desolate; after ten years plus a rebirth, I realized I never truly understood Henry Preston.
Henry said, "She probably took my phone and accidentally sent it out. I’ll have someone handle it, it won’t disrupt your life." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Before, I wasn’t even allowed to touch his phone, and now Azure can casually play with it, even browse his albums to find those photos, then create a fake account to publicly smear me.
I must be delusional to have thought Henry had feelings for me recently.
"Are you sure it was accidental?" I stared into Henry’s eyes.
"Yes, I’m sure," Henry paused before answering.
Azure opened her mouth to defend herself pitifully, "Miss Hathaway, you’ve misunderstood me. I never meant to harm you. I don’t know why you..."
I couldn’t stand listening any longer, raising my hand to slap her again.
What an actress!
Henry was quicker, catching my raised hand with such force that I couldn’t resist. He looked at me coldly, "Zoe Hathaway, you were the one who refused to look back, and now you’re the one disturbing me and Azure. Enough!"
Seeing this, Azure’s eyes betrayed a slight joy.
Yet she still pretended to console me, "Miss Hathaway, I know I’m just a replacement. He told me about Winter Tate. I know my place, so I wouldn’t do such things; I’m not in the position to."
"Get lost!" I erupted in anger. In my past life, I lost miserably to Azure, and now she’s here acting again. I pulled away from Henry’s hand and pushed Azure aside.
Azure almost fell, but Henry quickly steadied her, and she nestled into his arms, crying.
Seeing his precious daughter being bullied, Walter Vaughn couldn’t stand it. He rushed over and shoved me; his strength was worlds apart from mine. I was almost pushed out of the room, landing on the corridor floor.
"Zoe Hathaway!" Henry’s face changed color, quickly letting go of Azure and stepping over to help me up.
My body didn’t hurt much, but my heart ached so much I couldn’t breathe.
I harshly shook off Henry’s hand, tears uncontrollably streaming down my face.
When I finally stood up, I realized everyone was surrounding me, watching with varied expressions. A few servants in the downstairs living room were craning their necks to see what had happened.
I pulled the financial settlement agreement from my bag, saying to Henry, "Do you think these things are enough to compensate me?"
"If you don’t think it’s enough, I can add more," Henry’s demeanor was no longer as cold as before but tinged with tension and worry.
Hearing his words, Azure’s face subtly changed.
She was already unwilling to give me half; it was as if I were taking her money. If I got more, it would be like a knife to her heart.
I smirked, then forcefully tore the agreement into shreds, scattering the pieces all over the floor.
At that moment, Azure’s lips twitched slightly, a flash of undisguisable joy passing through her face.
She must think I don’t want these properties anymore, that they are all hers now, that all the benefits ultimately belong to her.
"Zoe!" Suddenly, Crystal’s anxious voice came from downstairs, with Leah and Tiana also present, while Silas was supporting Crystal, and they all hurriedly rushed upstairs.
When Crystal and the others arrived, I immediately felt supported. They glared angrily at Henry and Azure, looking as if they wanted to tear them apart.
Jason looked at Silas standing on my side, confused, "Silas, are you choosing a woman over friendship? Are you ignoring right and wrong for your wife? Don’t you know how Zoe bullied Azure?"
Silas glanced at me and answered firmly, "Brother Henry, Jason, this time I believe in Zoe. Azure is just pretending to be innocent; I’ve seen through her."
"What??" Jason was clearly baffled.
"Silas, the things I said in the hospital room were unintentional. I didn’t mean to say that; I was just feeling unwell at the time and in a bad mood, so..." Azure, knowing that Silas had overheard something, thick-skinnedly explained.
"You don’t need to explain to me, Azure. Heaven is watching human deeds, and the truth will always come out." Silas had thoroughly seen through Azure’s hypocritical facade and directly interrupted her.
Azure bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes. Witnessing this scene, Jason felt even more heartbroken than Henry did and immediately stopped Silas, "Don’t say anymore. She’s still a patient now, and there’s no need for this. There must be some misunderstanding among us!"
Walter and Laura also felt sorry for their daughter and hurriedly went to support her, fearing she’d get too upset and be unable to take it.
Laura solemnly said to me, "Miss Hathaway, please stop deliberately provoking my daughter. It was indeed our mistake to stay here today. We just didn’t have another place at the moment and followed Mr. Forrest’s arrangement. We did not come here to take over your house intentionally. If you’re not satisfied, just ask us to leave; there’s no need to be aggressive."
Driven by a strong desire to protect her daughter, Laura’s speech became hurried. She signaled to Walter with a look, and the two intended to leave with Azure.
But my intention was to settle this tonight; there’s no need to wait until Azure goes to University A. I took out the recording I had prepared in advance, ready to reveal Azure’s true colors to everyone.
Azure seemed to sense something was wrong. She suddenly rushed over and kneeled before me, "Miss Hathaway, I’m sorry, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have harbored fantasies about Mr. Preston, and I shouldn’t have appeared before you. This is all my fault alone; please don’t take it out on my parents. I will vanish as long as you are willing to forgive me!"
As she spoke, she started crying, looking so pitiful and helpless that it was truly a sight to move anyone.
Crystal couldn’t stand it anymore. The hormone changes during her pregnancy had made her temper more irritable. She pointed at Azure, "Alright, alright, stop acting. If you keep it up, I might really hit someone!"
Silas hastily held back Crystal tightly. The other people were also worried that she’d trouble with her belly and all started to persuade and coax her. No matter how furious I was, I had to restrain myself now and first calm Crystal down. I couldn’t let this two-faced person continue to agitate her.
I asked Silas to take Crystal away first, lest something really happen.
But Crystal was like she’d swallowed a bomb at that moment. She wouldn’t leave, no matter how much Silas tried to stop her; he didn’t dare pull her with force either. Meanwhile, Walter and Laura stood protectively in front of Azure, very tense.
"Dad, Dad!" Suddenly, Walter stumbled, clutching his chest with a pained expression. Azure, shocked, quickly supported him.
This father and daughter both had undergone heart surgery, and now, subjected to agitation, Walter ended up worse off.
Laura was also extremely nervous, "Walter, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me! Mr. Preston, please take my husband to the hospital quickly!"
Azure cried as she threw herself in front of Henry, "Mr. Preston, regardless of whether you believe me or not, please put other matters aside for now. A life is at stake. Could we please take my father to the hospital first?"
"Let’s go!" Henry hesitated, glanced at me, but didn’t ask further questions, just stepped forward to help support Walter downstairs. And the recording I had prepared instantly lost its most important audience, losing its meaning.
Jason shot me a glare, then looked at Silas with a resentful gaze, filled with disappointment in his good brother.
Silas did not make a sound, just gently hugged Crystal’s waist, cautiously attentive.
After everyone had left, the villa turned silent. For a moment, no one spoke, and even the servants downstairs seemed to have hidden, not daring to make any noise.
The frustration pent up in my chest had nowhere to go and had to be forcibly suppressed.
"Crystal, you should go back first. I’m okay now." Looking at the mess around me, I felt somewhat exhausted and weakly spoke to Crystal and the others.
"Zoe..." Crystal was not the patient type by nature; she wanted to say something, but Tiana stepped forward to stop her, shaking her head.
In the end, they had to leave, because what I needed the most right now was to be alone for a while.
The servants definitely didn’t dare to come upstairs for the time being, so I was alone on the second floor. I cleaned up the mess on the ground, threw it into the trash can, and then lay on the bed without moving, utterly exhausted.
