Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Azure Vaughn Asked to Meet Me

I think Uncle is right. Although my parents are open-minded and won’t force me to inherit the company in the future, I can’t be this selfish.

Moreover, Henry Preston and I are unlikely to divorce in the short term. Instead of wasting time struggling over futile emotions, it’s better to start changing myself and choose a different life.

"Uncle, I understand." I replied seriously.

"Your Sherman is managing a branch and needs an assistant. Why don’t you go abroad with me for some time? In the country, you’ll stay entangled with Henry Preston. Going abroad could help you focus on work." Uncle suggested, quite pleased.

Our family business is similar to Uncle’s, just one domestic and one overseas. If I really go to Uncle’s for training, it would be pretty good.

Most importantly, I can stay away from Henry Preston and them for a while, lest things get tangled.

My parents looked at me, and from their eyes, I saw anticipation, though they wouldn’t say it to pressure me.

My mom’s heart isn’t in the best shape now, and my dad is about to retire. It would be unfilial if I don’t take up my responsibility.

"Alright, Uncle, Aunt, I’ll go with you to Xylos after the New Year." I agreed firmly without much thought.

This response made everyone very happy, and we enjoyed a pleasant meal together.

After the meal, Uncle and the others left. They also have their property in City A, regularly cleaned by staff, so they don’t need to stay at our home.

Once they left, my parents surrounded me and asked, "Zoe, are you sure you want to work with your Uncle?"

"Yes, Mom and Dad, I’ve thought it over. Music is indeed very important to me, my greatest passion. But I’ve wasted so many years, and there’s no need to start anew. Anyway, I can still play the piano in my spare time while learning business, right?" I said lightly, holding my parents’ hands.

My dad let out a heavy sigh of relief and squeezed my hand silently, while my mom smiled with relief, "Alright, your dad and I have discussed it. We won’t interfere much with matters between you and Henry Preston. We respect every choice you make."

"Thank you, Mom and Dad!" My eyes welled up, but I refrained from crying and leaned on mom’s shoulder to calm down.

With less than a week to go before the New Year, I didn’t plan to return to my apartment. I decided to stay at home through the New Year and then go abroad with Uncle.

I had just spent two or three leisurely days when Laura Lawson’s call broke my peaceful life.

"Miss Hathaway, can you meet with me to discuss the matter concerning my daughter and Mr. Preston?" Laura Lawson’s voice was uneasy.

It’s her daughter’s fault, so she couldn’t be justified in her stance.

After a moment of silence, I asked, "What do you want to discuss? Azure Vaughn admitted to me that she likes Henry Preston, and he likes her too. Why don’t they just find a way to win both families’ consent and be together?"

"I don’t agree!!" Laura Lawson’s voice rose with agitation, "Unless I die!!"

She witnessed the times when Henry Preston and I were together and even helped with Chinese medicine to boost fertility. Now, Azure Vaughn is being scolded online, which is intolerable for a mother.

This attitude is much more intense than in my previous life, right?

The groundwork I laid down for so long finally yielded results.

"Auntie Lawson, emotions can’t be forced. If they’re in love, what can we do?" I replied softly.

Laura Lawson calmed herself, her voice slightly steadier, "No way, Miss Hathaway. As soon as she was discharged, I locked her at home. I won’t let her out until she’s cut ties with Mr. Preston. I also ask you to talk to him. He’s a married man, with a wife as outstanding as you, Miss Hathaway. There’s no need to keep clinging to my daughter."

So, Azure Vaughn is locked up by Laura Lawson now?

She risked everything with her suicide act, putting Henry Preston on edge, making my mother-in-law see her importance in his life, only to be locked up by her own mother upon discharge.

If I were Azure Vaughn, I’d be spitting blood as well.

Laura Lawson was sincere, and knowing she’s not a bad person, I reluctantly agreed, "Alright, I’ll try to persuade Henry Preston, but whether he’ll listen, I can’t say."

"Thank you, Miss Hathaway." Laura Lawson hung up.

I pondered for a while, then dialed Henry Preston, repeating what Laura Lawson had said.

Then I asked, "What’s your plan? Persevere or give up?"

"Don’t worry about it." Henry Preston detected the sarcasm in my tone and replied coldly.

"Hey, you’re the one who doesn’t want a divorce from me, yet you’re being so impatient?" I snorted, "Henry Preston, you’d better find a way to console your little sweetheart. She’s been locked up, and you keep delaying our divorce. Isn’t she supposed to be furious?"

"Zoe Hathaway, your verbal skills have really improved. You know exactly how to get under my skin, don’t you?" Henry Preston retorted.

Only now do I feel the thrill of being reborn. The initial groundwork is beginning to pay off, so my mind is clear, and my eloquence naturally follows.

"Not at all. I’m just reminding you. After all, Azure Vaughn is young, and her mind isn’t mature. I’m worried she might do something impulsive again." I drawled, "Anyway, whatever. I’m off for my beauty sleep now."

After saying this, I hung up and lay on the sofa, dead tired.

Just as I was about to drift off, the phone rang again. It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered the call lazily, "Who’s this?"

"Miss Hathaway, it’s me." Azure Vaughn’s usually crisp and sweet voice sounded tense and uneasy now. "Can we meet? I’m waiting for you at the ’Serendipity’ café."

"Weren’t you locked up at home?" I asked curiously.

"Come over, and I’ll tell you." Azure Vaughn’s voice was low.

"Alright."

I hung up the call, drove, and headed to the ’Serendipity’ café.

Azure Vaughn was already waiting inside. Behind the counter, a few young men and women occasionally glanced at her, presumably people who had seen the news.

Daring to meet me here showed she had a stronger mental capacity than I imagined.

Seeing me arrive, Azure Vaughn ordered a black coffee for me. Her face, pale and weak, still wore a faint smile. "Miss Hathaway, I remember you always order black coffee without sugar. Do you want a change?"

"No need, thank you." I sat down opposite her and got straight to the point, "What do you want to say?"

Azure Vaughn bit her lip, cradling the coffee cup in her hands. Her fingertips rubbed the cup’s surface, seemingly at a loss for words. After a long while, she softly asked, "Did your divorce case... succeed?"

I’m slightly surprised - she came to ask this question?

Azure Vaughn’s eyes were a bit moist, yet she remained calm in looking at me, "Maybe if you two divorce, my parents wouldn’t oppose so fiercely."
