Inside the sphere, Garan was holding out against two elementalists with higher levels than him. By this time, only Vara and Feller remained standing. The rest easily became collateral damage in the battle of elites early on.
Inside the circle, stepping on the ground was like a freezing death sentence, particularly to non-elementalists. And, even for the elementalists, stepping carelessly into Garan’s field consumed energy.
So at first, Vara was focused on creating platforms for himself (which the others took advantage of) while the enemy was focused on dealing with the dozen or so people before him.
This could also work to weaken him. Vara wasn’t fond of a challenge. He enjoyed lording over an enemy who was helpless, and he had no qualms with dealing with a weakened enemy.
The mana upkeep for this large sphere must’ve been immense! He didn’t know how he created it—he theorized it must’ve been some sort of unknown City-level tool—but Vara didn’t believe he was invincible!
Theoretically speaking, he must be tired, running out of mana and spirit, with limited defenses! At the very least, they knew the protection charms he had on him had already been broken by the earlier mobbing!
However, he wouldn’t have expected those useless bastards to be so useless against him! He let them use his metallic platforms that had sprung from the cold soil, expecting them to cause damage.
However, the bastard summoned ice spikes too, and he harvested a few within the first few minutes! One had to know many of these people had similar levels to him!
Fortunately, they had the advantage of numbers. Even counting the ice spikes, a few people did manage to get past through the field created by the spikes, raising their good weapons directly at Garan.
However, even if the weapon got in direct contact with Garan’s skin, that part of his body would suddenly be enveloped by sturdy ice, shielding him. At the worse case, if the weapon’s quality was below others’, it would even start to freeze as well, making it difficult to pull out.
In those cases, while the person tried to pull his weapon—even if it was just a second—the distraction was enough for their fall. A blink later, Garan’s hand appeared in front of his face, and ice spikes emerged from his palm.
SQUELCH!
"AHHH!"
The man could only gasp as the spike went straight through his eyes and through his brain. He flopped down helplessly to the ground, lifeless, a second later.
All these were superior techniques that would consume a lot of mana. The more Vara saw, the more confused he was. Surely, he didn’t have unlimited mana? That was impossible. So there must be a catch.
This went on for several more minutes, with more and more of them succumbing. Vara would also slash away and so would Feller, both of whom were trying to find weak points, but ended up with none.
While their teammates lost their lives, Vara and Feller gained more and more wounds on their bodies and their pride.
They were dealing with a person several levels lower than they were—and they couldn’t take him down even after teaming up!
Unconsciously, their attacks became more and more frantic, and it was obvious.
To be honest, Garan himself wasn’t certain what was happening. He was not entirely himself at the moment.
If he were to describe it, it was akin to being controlled by emotion, lulled by the power he suddenly had access to. It was a bit disconcerting, to be honest, but his concern right now was to get rid of these people.
Vara and Feller were unaware of his thoughts. It was only the two of them now.
They just thought Garan needed to die a horrible death for their anger to calm.
They cursed and went around the spikes, only for more and more of them to appear. They were fast and sharp and when they tried to punch the spikes down, they realized that it was much harder than it looked.
The two of them were both elementalist powerhouses, and they had also been in similar high-level fights before. Generally speaking, because such spikes were separated from the controller, they had a lot less resistance from attacks from other elementalists—especially one with higher levels than the controller!
However, it was not the case now. Even if they used their elements against the spikes—Vara with his metal, Feller with his fire—the spikes would more or less recover even if they were a bit chipped or smaller.
If this were a normal fight against people at their level and a typical level 29 ice user, those spikes would’ve long been obliterated!
Were the qualitative differences of their elements so wide?!
However, instead of being unsettled and terrified—that was something they would not admit to—they felt more greedy instead.
They assumed there was a tool that would improve the quality of the element in his hand. They had heard of its existence in cities, and they knew people from cities were here, so it wasn’t too far-fetched to think such a tool entered Alterra somehow!
They didn’t know what those City folk was planning exactly, but they were planning to take advantage!
And whatever tool he was using—they wanted it!
However, as they tried to barrage him with elemental attacks, they started to become more and more aware of the distance between them. As they lost mana, it didn’t seem like their enemy was sustaining damage at all!
"Damn you!" Feller yelled as he surrounded himself with fire. Using his most powerful flamethrower skill, the [Hell’s Inferno] which had a form similar to a flamethrower, but unleashed at much higher temperatures.
He spewed Garan with his ability. Feller had been recovering from his earlier fight so he was controlling the use of his element after seeing that its effect was limited against this man’s ice.
Fortunately, Feller had now recovered enough mana to use a high level skill, and he wanted to show this bastard who was stronger, so he did not hold back!
Similarly, Vara narrowed his eyes and decided to join in, He continued to stab him with metal spikes as he was enveloped by the flames.
Although they couldn’t see what was happening, he believed the flame would prevent him from defending from his attacks like he had been doing before this.
The image of Garan skewered through by several of his metallic spikes and being burned to a crisp appeared in Vara’s mind, bringing a disturbing grin on his face.
Their eyes never left the spot Garan stood as he was enveloped by the flame. Feller continued to unleash the skill until he ran out of mana to sustain the technique.
Sadly, he did not have unlimited mana and had to put away the fire.
"That should be enough—" he said, gasping, while Vara stabbed a few more sharp spikes for good measure.
However, when the flames and smoke died down, the two men’s blood turned cold.
Even after all that... Garan was still unscathed!
What kind of monster was this?
