Chapter 607: Chapter 244: The Pinnacle of Puppetry Technology_2

"The investigation sure was fast." Xi Mu gestured for the White Dragon King to take a seat. The two clinked their wine glasses and started chatting casually.

Both sides tacitly avoided discussing Evelyn.

However, Evelyn’s expression appeared somewhat uneasy. She held her fruit juice with both hands, lowered her head, and remained silent. With her intelligence, she naturally understood why her father was here.

Yijelika, on the other hand, appeared exceptionally composed. Her long legs crossed beneath her formal dress as she gently swirled the red wine in her glass, her gaze falling on the puppet girl curiously peeking out from behind the railing. A faint smile appeared on her face.

Ever since Ahtal had arrived at the Church of Death’s headquarters, the probing from the Church of Death had never ceased. Yet, it had never interfered with the interaction between Ahtal and Evelyn, demonstrating a remarkable level of patience.

Some time later.

"Ahtal, have you freed yourself from the King of Ash’s restrictions?" The White Dragon King asked the question that mattered most.

The greatest existential crisis in this world right now was Ragnarok. If Ahtal could free himself from the King of Ash’s constraints, then everything would... Hmm, it probably wouldn’t stabilize either. Even without the crisis of Ragnarok, conflicts between gods and demons would erupt shortly thereafter, and this world could still face ruin.

Unless someone could subdue everyone with overwhelming power.

"If I had freed myself from the King of Ash’s restrictions," Xi Mu said in a joking tone, "I would be at the Temple of Omniscience right now."

The White Dragon King chuckled, then finished his red wine in one gulp. Afterward, he stood up and turned to his daughter Evelyn, saying:

"You should go home occasionally and let your brothers and sisters meet your lover." With that, he blended into the sunlight and disappeared—his speed was almost imperceptible.

Such was the power of the Sun God’s companion, able to merge into sunlight and move freely. Theoretically, as long as light shone there, he could instantly transfer to that location.

"When the opportunity arises, I can accompany you for a visit," Xi Mu said to Evelyn with a smile, standing up and propping himself against the table.

"But for now, I need to meet an old friend."

"I’ll go with you," Evelyn said as she stood up, then explained to Ahtal, "I know where they are."

Xi Mu naturally had no objections. After bidding farewell to Yijelika, the two left the castle together to meet the old acquaintances from the Church of Death.

Among the Church of Death’s members, only two retained memories of the future: Shark Girl Kashute and the puppet girl. However, Xi Mu didn’t necessarily need the Church of Death to have retained memories of the future. His own memories were sufficient.

As Xi Mu and Evelyn departed, Yijelika watched the two from afar, resting her chin on one hand. She let out a wistful sigh. If this world was destined to be burned to ashes by Ahtal’s own hands, then everything happening now was merely his way of saying goodbye to the past.

How truly sorrowful.

...

...

Some time later.

Within a room with tightly shut windows and doors.

Luwei folded her arms, lightly propping her chin, and gazed at Ahtal across from her before slowly speaking, "I’ve always had a question."

"What question?" Xi Mu asked, sitting in his chair. Beside him sat Evelyn, poised and graceful, their close proximity suggesting an intimate relationship.

"Why don’t I retain memories of the future?" Luwei voiced her query, which had plagued her mind. In the future, she was renowned as the Church of Death’s strategist, playing a role far more pivotal than the puppet girl or Shark Girl Kashute. Besides, she was personally handpicked by Ahtal to lead the Church of Death.

By all accounts, she should have retained memories of the future.

"You’ll have to ask the Time Witch about that," Xi Mu explained. "Who retains memories of the future and who doesn’t is entirely up to the Time Witch’s subjective decision. If she believes Evelyn’s retention of future memories could influence my choices, she’d preserve Evelyn’s memories. If she deems it irrelevant, she wouldn’t preserve them."

Luwei frowned, then sighed, "I really wish I could retain memories of the future. Otherwise, it feels like a part of me has died. Plus, knowing concrete details about the future would help me make informed decisions."

After the prophecy by the Three Goddesses of Fate, her natural assumption of her role as the Church of Death’s strategist only intensified her desire for information on future events. The more she sought understanding, the more things felt off. Why would even Shark Girl Kashute get to retain memories?

Yet she, the one who determined the future war’s outcomes, retained not even a shred of future memory—she couldn’t help but feel looked down upon by the Time Witch.

"Maybe the Time Witch doesn’t think we have a good relationship," Xi Mu speculated, then quickly added, "Or perhaps the Time Witch asked for your opinion beforehand—whether you wanted to retain memories of the future."

Luwei turned her gaze to the Dragon Clan’s young princess.

Evelyn, clearly understanding the meaning within Luwei’s gaze, shook her head lightly, "The Time Witch didn’t ask me whether I wanted to retain memories of the future."

Luwei snorted softly, "In any case, I’m just a worker in her eyes—without any real value."

"Personally, I think we get along fairly well," Xi Mu said with a smile. "I greatly admire your abilities. If one day we manage to survive Ragnarok, I will still entrust you with important responsibilities."

Luwei: "..."

She didn’t doubt Ahtal’s promise of entrusting her with vital tasks, for the Church of Death, in a sense, was an extension of Ahtal’s influence. Unless there arose an irreconcilable conflict between the Witch of Death and Ahtal, the Church of Death remained Ahtal’s most easily controlled faction. As its strategist, Luwei would naturally remain in a position to be heavily relied upon.
