Alpha's replacement bride is destined mate-Chapter 36 It Turns Out He Had a Mate
Emily, lying in her hospital bed, drifted off to sleep after a nurse administered a tranquilizer. When she awoke, night had already fallen, and the nurse had brought her dinner, which was now sitting untouched on the table. Emily, however, had no desire to eat.
There was a knock on the door, and Emily sat up, glancing towards it. "Please come in," she called out
The door creaked open, and Marx stepped inside, the faint outline of his neck tattoo visible in the glow of the incandescent lamp. Emily’s eyes flickered with disappointment when she realized it was Marx who had entered.
"Emily, what are you even expecting?" she muttered to herself.
"Luna, I’m sorry to disturb you," Marx said, standing still. "Alpha said he’s tied up with other matters, so he’s asked me to take you back to the hotel first."
"Okay," Emily nodded. "I need to change my clothes. Please give me a few minutes."
"I’ll be right outside," Marx said before exiting the room.
Ten minutes later, Marx drove Emily back to the hotel. As the car cruised through the streets, Emily noticed that both sides of the road were deserted.
"Why isn’t there anyone out there?" Emily asked curiously.
"There was an explosion in the square today," Marx replied, gripping the steering wheel. "The king temporarily imposed a curfew."
At this point, Emily spots two Alpha warriors in guard uniforms escorting a man towards an armored vehicle. A woman is seen crying and running after them, but when she attempts to halt their progress, an Alpha warrior forcefully shoves her to the ground.
"Are they arresting someone?" Emily inquires.
"The royal family suspects that today’s bombing is tied to Western spies," Marx explains. "They’ve been conducting a sweep of the city for spies." He adds, "Alpha couldn’t leave because he was occupied with the spy investigation."
"Is he often involved in this kind of thing?" Emily is intrigued by Klaus’s work. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
"Sometimes," Marx replies simply.
"Marx, may I ask you a question?" Emily gathers her courage and asks.
"Go ahead," he encourages.
"Do you know who Maya is?" Emily ventures.
Marx’s expression stiffens at the mention of Maya’s name, and it takes him a moment to respond. "Maya used to be Alpha’s mate," he finally says.
"His mate..." Emily is stunned. It turns out the woman named Maya was Klaus’s mate. No wonder he still thinks of her in his dreams.
"Is she pretty?" Emily asks hesitantly.
Marx pauses for a moment before nodding. "Yes."
Emily asks gently, "So, what happened between Klaus and Maya?"
"I’m sorry, I can’t reveal much to you," Marx replied cautiously. "Alpha has forbidden anyone from mentioning her name since Maya left."
"She’s gone?" Emily asked. "Where did she go?"
The car came to a stop, and Marx informed Emily, "We’re at the hotel."
Emily sighed, acknowledging that the topic was closed. She exited the car and made her way into the hotel, with Marx following her to her room.
"Luna, I’m on duty tonight," Marx said. "Call me if you need anything."
"Thank you," Emily said, closing the door behind her.
She was curled up on the sofa, exhausted by the day’s events. She longed for someone to talk to, but she had no friends by her side. Here, in this unfamiliar North, it seemed like she had nothing but Klaus.
She hated this feeling, hated being like a fragile blade of grass swaying in the wind, needing to find support just to survive.
She had to admit that Klaus had been kind to her, but she couldn’t be sure if his actions were motivated by the interests of their two countries or something else entirely.
Emily knew well that the bond of a mate ran deep in the marrow of one’s bones. And since he already had a mate, how could he so easily fall in love with her?
Perhaps, after all, he was merely using her as a substitute for another woman. Emily suddenly felt a pang of sadness at the thought. What the hell was wrong with her?
......
Klaus ordered the arrest of a large number of people, and anyone with links to the bombers was taken to prison for questioning. After a series of interrogations, he finally obtained a list of Western spies, and he instructed Meiss to arrest them one by one according to the names on the list.
It was only the following morning that he was able to leave the underground prison in the Royal Office Building. When he returned to the hotel, he happened to cross paths with Marx during a shift change.
"You’re back," Marx said, eyeing the tired Klaus and wondering whether to broach the subject of Maya.
"Hmm," Klaus replied, reaching for the door handle when Marx stopped him.
"It’s Luna," Marx said, lowering his voice. "She asked me something about Maya."
"How does she know about Maya?" Klaus pulled his hand away from the bronze doorknob, his tone low and laced with anger.
"Did you tell her?"
"No, I didn’t," Marx protested, looking somewhat innocent. "I swear I’ve never mentioned anything about Maya in front of Luna. I’m not stupid enough to bring up his ex-Luna to the current Luna. I’m not much of a talker, anyway."
Marx was well aware that the name Maya was a taboo for Klaus, a painful reminder of his past.
"But she kept asking me, so I just told her that Maya used to be your mate."
"Okay, I got it." Klaus said, opening the door and entering the room.
When Klaus entered the drawing room, he saw Emily sleeping on the sofa, completely uncovered. Klaus took off his sunglasses, removed his coat, and approached the couch to lift Emily, who was still asleep.
"You’re back?" Emily opened her eyes.
"Sorry, I’m late." Klaus carried Emily into the bedroom and gently laid her on the bed.
"I’ll go take a shower first." Klaus said casually.
"Wait." Emily stopped him.
Klaus had a hunch that she might say something to him, and he wanted to head straight to the bathroom, but he chose to stay.
"What?" He leaned his back against the wall and looked at Emily with a calm expression.
Emily could see the exhaustion in Klaus’s eyes, but she couldn’t resist asking him, "Have you ever had a mate before?"
"Yes," Klaus replied.
"But you’ve never told me about your mate."
"I don’t think that’s necessary," Klaus spoke impatiently. "Do you have to talk about this now?"
Emily finally broke down in the face of Klaus’s cold demeanor.
"Yes, I think it’s necessary." Emily said excitedly, "I wonder why you say you like me, but you call other women’s names in your dreams."
Klaus frowned, realizing it was because of the dream.
"I’m sorry."
"I don’t need your apologies," Emily said. "I just want to tell you, if you’re still in love with another woman, go ahead and be with her. I’m not a placeholder for anyone."
"Are you jealous?"
"Jealous?" Emily stubbornly denied, "No, I’m not jealous. I just hate being played with."
"You think I’m playing with you?" Klaus angrily said, "That’s enough, Emily. I don’t want to continue this conversation anymore."
Klaus turned to leave, and Emily heard the door slam shut.
There was a long silence in the room, and Emily’s heart ached.
She heard a low whimper, as if from the deepest part of her soul, and it was...her wolf.
