Chapter 184: Riven’s Death

Boom boom boom

Fireballs and tendrils struck the ground and left deep craters. Trees were ripped out, and the ground was torn all around.

Beletrex wasn’t like Luke, he had full control over his power and was able to attack with even more strength.

This was no longer Luke. It was all Beletrex, carrying the emotions and desire of Luke to kill Riven.

Lance, Noel, and Riven dodged the attacks, running away to give space between them.

"How did you kill someone this strong?" Lance asked as they ran.

"He wasn’t this strong before, and I used a special technique. I can’t use that again for now," Riven replied.

As they ran, a tendril shot into the air and came for Riven’s head. He stepped to the side and dodged it before cutting it. He lunged forward as fast as he could, trying to get close to Luke.

But there was no chance. Luke attacked with a barrage of tendrils. Riven blocked as fast as he could, but some ripped through his side. Blood sprayed. He gritted his teeth and pushed through. He looked up for an opening, but what met him was a massive black fireball.

Quickly, he summoned a flame wall, blocking the attack. An explosion happened as the two flames collided, and he was thrown back.

Noel rushed over and grabbed him before he reached the ground. He helped him stay standing. They looked at Luke as he stood there.

The realization that they couldn’t really stand against him now hit them all. From their short exchange, they could already see the difference in strength.

But would they back down? Hell no. Riven didn’t know that, he only knew that Twilight was built to cut, and so he was going to cut.

He gripped the sword tight and looked at Lance and Noel. They both nodded and charged forward. Lance took the lead, running ahead. Luke attacked with tendrils, firing multiple.

Lance swung his sword back as he ran, and then slashed. His sword glowed gold as it cut through the tendrils in a powerful burst of mana.

But some managed to pass and stab into his shoulder and abdomen. Yet he gritted his teeth and kept pushing.

Riven and Noel flanked from the sides, rushing in fast while Lance distracted him. Riven felt this would work,he had the feeling it would work, until he heard Beletrex speak in a twisted, very sinister voice.

"You will all die," he spoke, and like a pulse or a wave, Riven felt something hit his chest. And he wasn’t the only one, as Noel and Lance also felt it.

’What’s wrong? What’s happening? Why can’t I move? What’s wrong with me? Come on legs, move,’ Riven screamed in his mind. He looked around and saw that the two of them could not move as well.

He didn’t understand. Nothing was holding them, yet somehow they couldn’t move.

’Is... is this fear?’ His mind raced. He realized that his body wasn’t tied down, it was only scared, and his mind refused to allow him to move.

Now that Beletrex had stopped them, it walked toward Noel first. Tendrils grabbed him and lifted him off the ground, about to absorb his life.

Riven watched this. He immediately started struggling. He pushed, he pulled, but nothing was working.

’No, no, I’m not letting you take Noel! I will never let you!’ Riven screamed in his mind and gritted his teeth. He pushed as hard as he could, veins bulging, bones popping. Pain shot all around his body as he struggled, but he didn’t stop.

He would rather die than allow Noel to die. Noel was the closest person he had in this world, the only person that knew him and understood him.

Riven’s bones popped and shifted, some dislocated. His eyes were red, but finally, he broke free. His foot stepped forward. He stretched out Twilight.

"Please, help me," he muttered and used Flame Blast. But right before the flame shot out, he heard a voice, calm and sweet.

"I’ll help you." It was the voice of the lady in his sword, and just as she spoke, Flame Blast shot out of his sword, but it was unlike anything he had seen before. It was the size of a full human. Flames burned blue and hot.

Beletrex turned and looked at the attack just before it hit. It slammed into its body and exploded. Riven dashed forward, running as fast as he could despite the pain. He grabbed Noel and turned his back to the explosion. The blast threw him fast and far.

He wrapped his hands around Noel to make sure nothing happened to him. He slammed into the floor and rolled until they came to a stop.

Noel was fine, and he could finally move again. Noel looked at Riven above him, bleeding, face full of bruises and dirt.

"Bro," Noel spoke, his eyes shaking as he saw the state Riven was in.

Riven forced a smile. The explosion from his own attack had damaged him severely, and he was struggling to stay awake.

"I... kept you alive," Riven said and chuckled. "You didn’t die." He said and got to his feet. Noel got up quick and tried to hold Riven, but Riven was already walking toward Beletrex.

Despite the explosion, Beletrex was already healing.

"Riven! Stop! You are injured," Noel yelled.

"I’m taking it down," Riven spoke only those words, but Noel could feel the resolve behind them.

He gritted his teeth and ran up as well. His brother had risked his life for him, so he would do the same and stand for Riven now.

Lance had also gotten up. He stood there, watched as Riven walked past and Noel came running past as well. He gripped his sword, also ready to fight.

Beletrex fully healed after a few seconds and was standing again. Riven got into a stance and lunged forward at top speed.

STAB

Suddenly, Riven heard the sound of a sword penetrating flesh. He turned around, and everything went in slow motion as he saw a blade right through Noel’s chest.

The person holding the sword? It was none other than Lance. He stood there with a wide grin on his face, his eyes hollow and crazed.

"Hahaha hahaha! You really believed I would aid you, Riven? Are you that stupid? I hate you! I hate you with every fiber of my existence.

You took that which belonged to me. You made my life a living hell. So I waited and plotted the right time that I would kill you. You threw the opportunity into my hands.

I don’t care what happens after that monster kills you. All that matters is that you are dead. DEAD!" Lance spat. He twisted the sword and pulled it out.

Riven looked at Noel. He flashed a smile. Blood poured from his mouth as his body collapsed forward.

Riven watched. The whole world turned into slow motion. Even when Lance ran away, he didn’t chase, he didn’t move, he didn’t even run to Noel.

He just stood, watching, as the world lost color before his very eyes. He saw the blood seep out of his brother’s body.

His mind started going static. The image of his mother from Earth, dead on the floor, killed by his father, began overlapping with Noel on the ground. It kept happening over and over. He saw their blood, their faces, and the common factor, him standing there and watching.

His heart beat faster. His blood pumped harder. His head swirled. He didn’t know what to think, nor did he have anything to think about. It was all blank. The only thing there were the two images overlapping, and the horror replaying over and over and over.

Riven was so gone that he didn’t notice Beletrex attacking. Beletrex swung his tendrils so hard, it slammed into Riven, shattering all his ribs, breaking every bone it came in contact with. His eyes popped from their sockets, arms twisted in more ways than one. Blood spilled from his body instantly like a juice box that was stepped on.

His body was hurled through the air. He slammed into multiple trees, his body getting wrecked even more. He slammed into the ground and rolled for several meters until he finally came to a stop.

His mind was active for a few seconds. The pain in his body didn’t even register, he was too damaged to have any feelings of pain.

[Mission failed]

[The host has failed the mission and is about to die]

Those were the last words Riven saw, but even that didn’t register in his mind. He was blank, empty. His brain was active, but he was gone already.

And as the time ticked by, his mind slowly started turning off. Riven slowly closed his eyes for the last time in this world. A tear dropped from his closed eyes, and as it touched the earth, he was gone.

Everything went silent.
