An Extra's POV: My Three Fiancees Hate Me-Chapter 78: Error
Chapter 78: Error
Riven ran through the forest. After a few minutes, he spotted Mathias fighting Noel. Mathias was fast with the way he used his magic—he was an earth user, and his casting speed was very quick. He shot out boulders at a very impressive rate.
But Noel was no ordinary candidate. He was faster, cutting down the rocks as they came. Mathias had not noticed it, but Noel was slowly getting faster with his sword. He was gradually building up an opening to attack Mathias and win.
’I have to make the switch at the right moment,’ he thought. He already knew that the blonde boy would be coming this way, so he waited.
"Aren’t you going to help me?" Mathias yelled while still chucking rocks at Noel.
"I can’t now, my opponent has arrived," Riven said. And right at that moment, a spear shot from the sky toward his head. He swatted the spear to the side and retreated backward rather than charge in.
This movement choice confused the blonde boy more, but he didn’t care. He jumped down from the tree and charged in. Grabbing his spear from the ground, he sent in a flurry of attacks as fast as he could.
Riven blocked all the attacks the moment they came. He moved without any sort of pressure on him.
’Hmm, maybe we don’t need to actually switch. I’m sure they can hold for two minutes, right?’ Riven thought. And with that thought alone, he broke into a smile and stopped retreating, suddenly attacking. He used a flame arc.
The blonde boy had not been expecting the sudden attack. He had figured that Riven didn’t use any sort of magic since he hadn’t used it all through.
He spun his spear and generated a wind shield to block the attack. He did it in a panic and didn’t notice when Riven made his way to his back and sent a powerful kick right into his ribs.
He shot through the air and slammed into a tree. He was still conscious, but barely able to move. Mathias saw what happened from the corner of his eye.
’My partner is about to take one of them out. I should play my own part and take this boy out as well.’
"Hey, stop daydreaming in front of me," Noel said. When Mathias looked up, Noel was in the air with his sword coming down, coated in lightning.
Mathias panicked as well, firing boulders in a rushed manner, hurling them as fast as he could. But rather than get hit, Noel ran on them and used them to propel himself.
Mathias tried to attack again, but it was too late. The lightning-coated sword stabbed into the ground and exploded with a massive blast that sent Mathias flying.
Noel pointed his blade at him. "Don’t get up," he said in a calm voice. But Mathias was not about to allow himself to stay down. He placed his palm on the ground, and a spike shot out under Noel.
Noel reacted very quickly and barely dodged the attack. But immediately, he retaliated with a massive bolt of lightning that hit Mathias and took him out instantly.
’Shit, that wasn’t part of the plan,’ Noel thought. He watched as Mathias’s body crumbled into light particles, meaning that he had died in the exam.
Now that he was gone, the only person left was the blonde boy, but he was still knocked down, so Riven turned his attention to Noel.
They had less than thirty seconds left to go in the exam, so they had to make that thirty seconds look good.
Noel charged in and slashed upward, but Riven blocked the attack and pushed his sword back. They followed up with some clean attacking and blocking that went on for more than ten seconds.
No progress was really made, but they made it look like they were really fighting—and that was what they wanted.
When only ten seconds were left, the blonde boy finally got up on his feet while the two were still fighting. Out of nowhere, he charged in with his spear and stabbed Riven in the side.
It wasn’t a killing blow, but it was enough to cause Riven a world of pain. The blonde boy had done this in the hopes that his partner would actually finish it off, but when he looked at Noel, he realized that he had been a fool.
Because rather than push forward, Noel was retreating. To those outside, it looked like he was retreating to take a proper stance to attack and finish it off, but to the blonde boy who saw it in real time and up close, he knew what had happened.
’You two are working together,’ the realization formed in his mind—and then the clock finally ran out. A loud buzz sounded to announce the end of the match, and the forest vanished. They were back in the arena—and so was Mathias, who had been killed.
Their strips suddenly lit up—Noel and Riven’s strips glowed green, meaning they had both passed, while the blonde boy and Mathias had red lights.
Mathias stood in the arena. He stared at his strip for seconds. He had no expression on his face, no tears in his eyes—just a blank look.
He began walking out of the arena without looking up. He kept his head down and walked out, leaving the arena.
Riven watched this and couldn’t help but feel guilty. In the normal story, he should have never been here, and Mathias should have gotten in.
’Sigh,’ Riven let out a sigh.
Suddenly, Riven got a head-splitting headache. His mind buzzed with so much pain that he almost fell to his knees right in the arena.
He grabbed his head and ran out of the arena under the confused gaze of everyone. He ran out as fast as he could, the pain continuing to grow more and more.
And then, his system screen came up—blaring error signs started showing.
