Chapter 3 - Classes and Ranks

"What do you mean we can't go back?!" the group said, worry now engraved on their faces.

They still had families, their aged parents, and even their work. These were things that were a part of their lives, and now, in just one fell swoop of falling into the ground, they had lost everything.

"I'm sorry, but the spell that the gods have granted us is only a one-way spell, meaning you can't go back to your original world unless the gods allow it," the king said with a solemn expression. He understood what they must be going through at the moment. He also had a daughter—if she were to just disappear into thin air, he would be extremely worried. Probably an I will not eat till my daughter is back kind of situation.

"Well, I don't think we have any other choice now. We have to agree since they do need our help, and if we can't go back to our original world, then we have to see this place as our new world. We have to come to terms with reality—if this is truly reality," Yuji said with a solemn look on his face as he addressed his co-workers.

"I assume you're right. This is our new world, so we have to accept it whether we like it or not," Mayumi said with a solemn expression, just like Yuji's.

The rest of the gang also agreed, except Kenji, who objected, "What are you guys talking about?! This is not our world; this is not where we came from. But when a bunch of random people summon you to their own world or realm through some 'god's' magic spell, you just go for it? And you say that I'm a fool? Why don't we just go and meet these so-called gods to send us back to our world?!"

Kenji looked at the king with a disappointed expression. "You, who ask for help—if your most powerful wizards or mages can't deal with your demon king, then what makes you think that we, common people with not the slightest bit of magic, can help you? Just because some god tells you? Do you guys not know the meaning of blind faith?" Kenji exclaimed, fury burning in his eyes.

He had been quiet all this while, but no more. What the heck? So, we leave our lives behind to come and help you guys? Why the heck don't you just ask your gods to defeat the demon king for you?

"Hey, Kenji, shut up!" Yuji said as he walked up to him, actual fire in his eyes.

"Who the fuck do you think you are, Kenji? A leader? How dare you speak for all of us?!" Yuji shouted, raising his fist and sending a punch flying toward Kenji.

Pow!

As he was punched, Kenji looked at Yuji with a shocked expression. "Did you just hit me, Yuji?!" Kenji immediately came forth and dealt a blow to Yuji.

But unluckily for Kenji, Yuji was faster and was able to dodge the blow while using the opportunity to land another strike.

As the punch connected, Kenji was sent back two steps, a huge bruise now forming on his face.

"How dare you!" Kenji growled. As he was about to continue the fight, a magic bubble suddenly enclosed his fist, stopping it mid-air.

"Enough!"

The thundering voice of the king reverberated in their ears like a mash of gongs in the same hall.

"What do you think you are doing? Trying to kill yourselves?! We are great men and women, kings of this world, and here you are, daring to fight in our presence? Who the hell do you think you are?!" the king said, fury evident in his eyes.

The two held their heads low, allowing the king to scold them as much as he wanted. They knew they had been wrong to fight in front of him. If he truly wished, he could have them executed at any moment.

"Follow me," the king said as he turned around and began heading somewhere. He was closely followed by the five since they didn't want to upset him again.

"I am taking you to see the Great Sage. There, your classes will be given to you, and your rank will be discovered," the king explained calmly.

"Classes? Ranks? What are you talking about?" Mayumi asked with a curious gaze. She didn't know why, but she wanted to understand this world as best she could. Anything she had no clue about, she was going to ask.

The king took a deep breath as he prepared to answer Mayumi's question. "Classes are the type of role you play in this world. Without a class, you are not a human of this world and therefore cannot use mana. There are many different classes, but the most common are Mages, Warriors, Beast Tamers, Elementals, Crafters, and Boosters. There are a few more, but those will be explained later on your journey," the king explained in a very collected manner.

"Now for ranks. Ranks are divided into nine: F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, and L.

"Your rank is fixed from the moment you are born, and there is no way of changing it under normal circumstances. However, there are a few rare cases. You guys are the summoned heroes, so your ranks have to be high along with your class," the king said with a bright smile.

"Sorry, may I ask another question?" Mayumi asked inquisitively.

"Of course. What is it?" the king asked with curiosity.

"What is the weakest class known to humans so far?" Mayumi asked, her curiosity piqued.

"The weakest class, huh?" The king paused before answering. "Well, that would be the Beast Tamer class."
