Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 117 Explaining Space Water
Laurel’s gaze drifted down to her palms, her thoughts wandering through the possibility of being able to heal a field as big as the one before her.
’Laurel, Laurel, don’t be ahead of yourself, this takes time and you know it... by the way shouldn’t the system give a new mission? Or does it expect us to grow the plants the normal way now?...well that’s impossible, I already used the space water...’ Her gaze wandered to the field again. ’...it should be about time they start growing.’
And just as she had thought the crops started sprouting rapidly. The farmers were startled by the unnatural growth of the crops.
"Commander, what is going on?" The farmer, who had spoken to her earlier that day asked.
Murmurs rippled through the field, and some of the farmers hurried out of the field afraid it must be something as dangerous as the red mist.
"Everyone, calm down." Laurel’s voice echoed through the field through the voice amplifier she had taken from the leader.
The farmers turned to her, stopping in their tracks. Meanwhile, others continued walking out of the field.
"Don’t be afraid, this is the result of the biologically engineered water we mixed with the stream, it helps plants grow faster even in unfavourable conditions.
Don’t be afraid." She said reassuringly, and she heard her stomach grumble again... she hoped she was the only one who heard it.
"If it grows this fast, how is it even edible? Isn’t it like messing with nature? And maybe the food will even lack nutrients or taste." One of the farmers shouted, she appeared to be in her early fifties.
"It doesn’t affect the plant’s nutrients in any way whatsoever, and I understand your worries, but if we were to grow it the normal way, I’m afraid the harvest will be very difficult to get a handful of food," Laurel replied, her gaze drifting between the appalled faces of the farmers.
"With this water, our harvest will be bountiful and we don’t have to go hungry after our supplies are finished. The world is no longer what it used to be, and dire times call for dire measures. Trust me... and trust the process."
Laurel wondered if her words could get them to see in a new light... well, seeing the farmers’ faces, which remained the same, she doubted it.
"How long will it take for them to mature fully?" Another farmer asked.
Laurel lifted four of her fingers up.
"Four months?" A young man said with curious eyes. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
The older woman standing beside him gently hit the back of his head. "Are you stupid? Some of the crops here won’t even take that long to mature. She means four weeks." The woman said with a look of ’I know it all.’
Murmurs rippled through the field again.
"That’s so fast."
"At this rate, the fortress will be overflowing with food."
"Does that mean we get to have more food for our portion?" A man with a chubby body said.
"Oh, shut up, all you care about is food. Look at your stomach, it will burst soon!" The woman who had hit the young man’s head earlier snickered.
"Mama I know it all, don’t talk to my husband like that." Another woman standing by the chubby man said pointing at the other woman.
"You called me that again! Stop it, you...you...porcupined mouth! Look at your husband’s stomach one would think he was pregnant helping you to carry it... since you are unable to."
Pain flashed across the other woman’s face. She nodded, her lips pulling down as if she was holding back the urge to cry. "At least I have a husband, where is yours? I guess they got chased away by that foul mouth of yours!"
Laurel facepalmed herself seeing how the conversation was spiralling down into a fight.
"You..." Before Mama know-it-all could speak, Laurel interjected.
"Everyone stop what you are doing! Stop!" She wanted to say, ’just f**king stop’ badly, but she held back knowing there were elders among the farmers.
"It is not four weeks, I mean... four days." The last part was almost inaudible that the farmers had to strain their ears.
Silence stretched through the field for a moment, as if everyone was busy in their head trying to grasp the meaning of her last words.
"You mean four days! Like four days!" Mama know-it-all yelled in disbelief as she waved four of her fingers in the air.
Laurel nodded her head weakly. "Yes."
Another silence stretched through the field. The farmers glanced at themselves with bewildered expressions.
"Why are you surprised by the magical water?" The lazy hoarse voice made all heads turn towards his direction. "We even have a magical tree that protected us from the disaster outside, and how long did it take it to mature?" The voice paused, as if giving them time to think about it.
"Just a few seconds." He answered lazily, sitting on the ground while leaning his back on the wall of the canteen, where the farmers usually eat their meals. In between his lips was a blade of grass resting lazily as he pulled one leg up in an inclined position and the other straight. Both his heads were behind his head while his eyes remained closed.
"There goes the daydreamer, he actually said something meaningful today." Mama I know it all said with a sneer.
The farmers cast him disdainful glances. Who among them doesn’t know the daydreamer with idle hands as the devil’s workshop? He had refused training claiming he had a passion for farming, but from the day he joined the farming sector, all he did was fold his arms and sleep.
"So does that mean we get more food?" The chubby man asked his wife again with dreamy eyes.
"Oh, shut up." His wife replied with a look of irritation.
Laurel cleared her throat. "With that being said, he is right. Since my work is done here, I’ll take my leave." She said with a smile turning the voice amplifier off.
"Commander... we have more questions..."
Before they could say more, she had already disappeared.
Growl.
Laurel’s stomach grumbled again.
