Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 77 The End of the World?
The tension in the hall rose again, this time more suffocating than it was before.
"That is the patriarch of the Wayne family, even if Mrs. Wayne is strict, there is no way she can turn his request down." A man in the crowd whispered to his friend.
"If she can’t refuse him, doesn’t that make her incompetent as a leader?" The friend asked with a frown.
"If she doesn’t refuse she loses her authority as a leader, and if she doesn’t, she would be known for disobeying the patriarch and not fulfilling filial piety." Another chipped in.
"Doesn’t that mean she has no way out of this?" The first man said, his gaze returning to Grandpa Wayne and Jade.
Grandpa Wayne glanced at Jade who was sobbing, and clinging to his feet. His sharp gaze flicked to his granddaughter-in-law.
He inhaled sharply. ’If I choose to beg for Jade, I’ll break everything Laurel and Alexander had tried so hard to build... and if I turn a blind eye, I’ll be nothing more than an animal who eats their young. The world outside is dangerous...’
His thoughts were cut off when Jade’s hands tightened around his foot.
"Grandpa, I’m a Wayne, you can’t throw me out. Don’t throw me out." This time, Jade’s lips trembled with fear. Grandpa hadn’t spoken, and that hesitation meant she could be abandoned.
Felicia’s face was marred with fear, her hands fidgeting. She stepped forward. "Laur... Mrs. Wayne, please have mercy on Jade. She is still very young, and she has made a serious mistake. If you send her out, she won’t be able to defend herself beyond these walls.
...For the sake of our family bond... please forgive her."
She glanced at Alexander, her eyes begging him to step forward.
Ling Xuan’s eyes darkened slightly. "As I said before, it doesn’t matter which family you come from, and I will not be biased." Her words were like a sharp sword cutting through their egos. "Take her out now." She waved her hand.
Vera, who had remained indifferent all this while, suddenly felt the weight of Ling Xuan’s decision. ’There is no way she is serious right?’
"Brother, you should say something." Vera turned to Alexander with an accusing gaze.
Alexander stepped forward, standing beside Ling Xuan. His face was stoic, but his eyes held a faint trace of disappointment.
"Mrs. Wayne is the commander in the fortress. You can’t act impulsively just because you believe you are a Wayne or an important figure.
If it were outside the wall, your reputation could grant you benefits and entitlements. But inside the wall, you all will follow her commands and rules.
The world is breaking, and millions of people are already dying, we don’t have the time for debates. If you can’t follow the rules, then you should leave.
And once you leave the fortress, you can never return back." He said, his cold eyes meeting Jade’s horrified ones.
"Laurel!" Jade cried more despitely... "let me stay... I’ll do anything you want me to... I can patrol the walls... or anything you want, cook... farm... anything!" The thought of living in the chaotic world was like a horror movie to her.
And if she should leave, wouldn’t that cut off her right to the remaining Waynes’ wealth? No, no way she was leaving empty-handed.
The guards hesitated for a brief second, before grabbing her again and dragging her outside the hall.
The hall fell into a deep silence, the silence was so thick that the sound of a pin dropping would have echoed through the hall.
"Ling Xuan... she would die if she stepped out of the fortress." Laurel’s voice echoed in her head. "...She was the first to die among the Wayne family in my past life... Ling Xuan, don’t send her out. She won’t survive."
"Then it is her fate." Ling Xuan replied inwardly, her voice devoid of emotion.
"You can give her hard punishment... and you can’t rule the fortress like a military rule..." Laurel’s words paused midway. She let out a sigh. "I know we have to be strict, but we don’t have to be too strict."
"There is no more discussion about this." Ling Xian replied curtly.
"Ling Xuan! We need to have this discussion, she is family. And we know whenever she opens her mouth it is like a waste bin, however, that is all to her." Laurel said, her heart racing from the tension.
"No."
They were so lost in their argument that they failed to register how quiet everything was.
"The rain has stopped." One of the soldiers standing close to the door said with excitement.
Most of the people were more than delighted to hear the news. That means they don’t need to walk around in heavy protective suits. It also meant the children could play outside.
Some of them rushed outside to experience the dry weather, shouting in excitement.
"What?!" Laurel’s voice tore loudly through Ling Xuan’s skull.
"Why are you shouting?" Ling Xuan clicked her tongue in displeasure.
"Ling Xuan, take everyone to the basement now!" Laurel said already pacing anxiously in the system’s space.
"Why?" Ling Xuan said, already signalling her men to come closer. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"The only time the rain stopped was only for a short moment before the meteor shower... but, it shouldn’t happen now, we still have two weeks before the end of the world," Laurel said, biting her nails anxiously.
Ling Xuan’s eyes narrowed. "Sound the alarm!" She ordered her men.
She turned to Captain Rowan. "Together with your squad, evacuate the primary people to the base in districts A and C."
If what Laurel said was true, then, there was no time for assumptions, and it was better the people were safe, than put in danger.
The people who were busy jubilating became worried when the soldiers ran out of the hall with serious expressions... As if the end of the world was... here.
Then a loud blaring sound echoed throughout the fortress.
"Everyone, come with me!" Captain Rowan shouted, as he cleared the path for the people. Their priority was the vulnerable. Even when he wanted to question the order, he knew there was no time to waste judging from her tone.
"What is going on?" One of the women with blonde hair asked, her blue eyes glancing frantically at the crowd who were descending in panic.
"This is no time for questions, just follow the orders." Enzo barked at them, as he waved for some of them to follow him.
The moment the people followed the soldiers out into the streets, their eyes widened in horror, as the sky suddenly turned blood red.
One of the children stopped in his tracks, staring at the bloodied sky as he fidgeted with the dinosaur toy in his hand.
The people ran past him, their bodies colliding with his.
