Chapter 64: Boss Room

Myles studied their faces one by one. He can see that determination burned in their eyes but it was lined with unease and worry as well.

His grip tightened around the black sword as he finally asked, "What do you think?"

George, standing near the middle, shifted his weight before answering. "This could be more dangerous. In this place everything feels multiplied whether the EXP or the danger, and I don’t think this door is an exception."

Daniel and Sam exchanged quick glances, then nodded almost in unison.

"I agree," Daniel said.

"He’s right." Sam added nothing more, but her grim nod carried the same feeling of fear.

Ethan, the second youngest of them, pushed his glasses up nervously before blurting out in a tone that cracked slightly, "This... this looks like a boss room."

He used the words any gamer would. But they all understood the meaning immediately.

What lay beyond this door could very well be the strongest creature lurking in this place.

Myles considered those words silently. He believed the same.

That was why he asked for their thoughts instead of rushing forward. If it was only his own fate he would have already stormed in. But this was about all of them. They must have wanted to follow him no matter his decision.

"I think we need to go in. We can’t leave it behind us not knowing what’s inside." Nadine broke the pause, her voice steady despite the tension.

Victor adjusted his grip on the bloodied kitchen knife and nodded toward the door. "I don’t see any other choice either. It’s either that or turning back outside, and we’ve already come this far."

Myles let their words sink in as he gazed at the swirling black smoke that seeped from the door’s edges.

His chest rose and fell with a calm breath, his expression hardening.

"I think we should go in. There’s no other path forward. Either we retreat outside... or we see what waits beyond this door. Since we’re already here, I’d rather face it than waste everything we’ve done."

Silence stretched after his words. Each of them weighed the thought, the danger, and the risk.

But in their hearts, they already knew the answer.

Their lives up to this point had been nothing but danger. And in this world, the only way to grow stronger was to walk toward the danger, not away from it.

One by one, they nodded. A quiet decision settled over them. They decided that they would step through that door.

Seeing their silent agreement, Myles stepped forward and placed his hand on the cold handle.

No notification appeared from the system, only a deep vibration of energy that coursed through his palm.

The door pulsed faintly, resisting for a moment before it was giving way under his strength.

The hinges groaned as the black door swung open and a rush of stagnant air drifted out, heavy with the stench of rot.

Inside, the chamber stretched wide.

The walls were the same grotesque fusion of fleshy tissue and broken subway structure, veins glowing faintly green as if feeding the room itself. But what drew their eyes was at the far end.

A creature knelt with its back to them, its body hunched low in front of a black stone structure that rose like an altar.

The altar shimmered with a dull, unnatural glow, veins of black light crawling across its jagged surface as if it was alive.

The kneeling figure moved.

Green veins ran across its flesh in writhing patterns, pulsing with the same rhythm as the walls. Jagged horns jutted out from its arms, shoulders, and back, each one glowing with that eerie green light.

Slowly, it rose to its feet.

When it turned toward them, the survivors froze.

On its head were five massive horns, longer and sharper than the rest, forming a crown-like shape that radiated energy.

Its hollow eyes glowed with green light and it was already locking onto them with hunger and fury.

Ethan’s voice cracked as he whispered, barely audible, "This... this really is a boss monster’s room."

Myles gritted his teeth, the glow of the black sword pulsing faintly in his grip as he raised it.

"Get ready to fight. I, Nadine, Victor, Ryan, and Kade will attack it first. The rest of you hold back and move only when you see the opening. Everyone got it?" He said. His voice was still sounded steady and sharp as steel.

One after another, voices answered back. "Understood."

"Yes."

Their tones carried fear, but also resolve.

George, Daniel, Ethan, Sam, and Clara exchanged glances. Their faces were pale and their hands trembling as they clutched makeshift weapons.

Fear churned in their stomachs, the sight of the horned monstrosity pressing down on their minds making them feel another feeling of terror.

But there was no choice. If they froze now, they would die.

So immediately they forced their hearts to harden. They gripped their weapons tighter until their knuckles turned white and ready to launch their attacks.

"GROAARRHH!!!"

The boss creature let out a guttural roar that shook the chamber. Its five horns flaring with sickly green light. Veins along its body pulsed faster and surging with energy as it dropped into a crouch.

Then it charged.

The fleshy ground trembled with every step. The air vibrated with raw force as it barreled toward them like an angry giant.

Myles surged forward first, as always, his blade leaving a crimson gleam in the air.

Nadine moving at his left, her makeshift spear gripped tight in her hand. Victor, Ryan, and Kade followed at full sprint with their weapons raised.

The chamber exploded into motion in the next second. Five survivors against the crowned monster as the rest stood behind, bracing themselves for the next clash.

Myles dashed ahead, black sword raised and intending on striking first.

But the towering creature moved with terrifying speed, faster than he anticipated.

Its arms slammed downward like twin hammers.

Myles barely managed to bring his blade up in time and then his blade met with a huge impact that shook through his arms. His knees bent under the crushing weight, the ground beneath his feet cracking from the force.

The monster’s strength was terrifying. Its claws scraped against the edge of his blade, sparks and green energy flaring as the two forces collided.

Myles gritted his teeth. His muscles strained as he fought to keep the sword from buckling.

The creature pressed harder. Its green eyes glowing brighter. It snarled as its jagged horns pulsed with energy.

Myles felt his arms trembling under the sheer power bearing down on him.

He knew he couldn’t hold this for long.
