Chapter 19: Chapter 19 – Taking Action_1

Yesterday, Zhang Yuan was exhausted after four occurrences.

However, on reflection, Li Ming realized his combat prowess might indeed be tiresome for others, thus he acknowledged Zhang Yuan’s actions.

The air in the room was somewhat stifling, with the adjacent bedroom door closed tight. The mere act of the master opening the door could reveal a scene sufficient to induce rage.

“………”

Half an hour later.

Zhang Yuan went to the bathroom. When she finished and emerged, she wore a worried look as she saw Li Ming off.

Li Ming waved his hand in response, leaning against the door and peering through the peephole. The hallway appeared desolate.

After a moment of contemplation, sword in his right hand, Li Ming carefully opened the door.

He cracked it open slightly, then slowly widened the gap, eventually revealing the rather small hallway in full view.

Li Ming breathed a sigh of relief. He quickly put away his sword, gripped his spear with both hands, placed the keys back in his pocket, and carefully advanced forward, dropping into a half crouch.

After advancing only a few steps, he eyed the blind spot in the horizontal corridor ahead, squinting, he took out a marble from his pocket and threw it onto the floor.

“Beep beep beep…”

The marble made a crisp sound as it bounced on the floor, the hallway remained deathly silent.

Li Ming took another deep breath and moved forward to pick up the marble. He took a quick glance around – aside from his shared apartment, the fifth floor held three other units, all with their doors tightly closed. There was nothing in the hallway except a shoe rack.

Gathering his nerves, he paused to think. To ensure that his retreat was safe, he did not hurry downstairs. Instead, he turned his spear upwards, took a deep breath and left the fifth floor, ascending one step at a time.

Behind him, Zhang Yuan hurriedly closed the door and waited for his message.

……

Li Ming resided on the fifth floor of a seven-story building. Consequently, climbing an extra two floors wouldn’t exhaust him much and it would ensure the safe passage through the hallways. Thus, it was a highly necessary task to undertake.

He was highly cautious, spear pointing upwards and taking two steps at a time all while keeping his eyes roving around the place. He proceeded like this until he reached the sixth floor.

He reached the staircase without encountering any unusual movement. He tossed the marble once more into the blind spots that were out of sight. On finding no response, he scouted with his spear in hand: the sixth-floor hallway was utterly deserted.

Breathing shallowly, Li Ming continued his ascent, slowly reaching the seventh-floor staircase. Li Ming’s gaze stiffened as he peered into the far end.

Through the sunlight streaming in from the window, he noticed a long shadow stretching across the floor of the horizontal hallway ahead.

A zombie?

Li Ming narrowed his eyes, throwing his marble onto the floor ahead.

“Click click click…”

“Grrr!!”

An abrupt roar erupted from the shadowy figure at the forefront: it had turned around and immediately charged towards the origin of the sound. Despite its staggering movement, it was surprisingly fast in its approach.

On careful observation, its speed was equivalent to a grown man’s jog.

Li Ming took a deep breath. He firmly gripped his spear, aimed it straight ahead, and held his gaze forward.

As soon as the roaring zombie appeared in the hallway ahead, a roar echoed in Li Ming’s heart. He immediately took two steps forward, the spear in his grasp lunged fiercely upwards, targeting the zombie’s lower jaw.

“Whoosh…”

The spearhead’s power exploded, puncturing the zombie’s lower jaw and piercing through its entire skull.

“Thud…”

The once charging zombie now collapsed as an inert corpse. Li Ming took a deep breath and pulled the spear out, spurting a puddle of white viscous fluid.

“Growl, growl…”

A growl sounded again from ahead, Li Ming’s face changed, and he quickly took two steps back, ready to fight.

No more than three seconds later, another zombie lunged forward like a rabid dog. Its face was fierce, its muscles rotten, and thick black veins protruded from the flesh, revealing utter ugliness.

Still short of breath, Li Ming aimed his spear straight at the target, collectively using the strength of his legs, waist, and arms, he thrust the spear fiercely.

“Hiss…”

Like a stab into worn-out cloth, the spearhead pierced steadily from the lower jaw into the skull, and as it was pulled out, the zombie’s body slumped onto the ground.

Yet Li Ming remained alert, keeping his eyes peeled. After two or three seconds, a small zombie crept grotesquely from the ground, causing him to furrow his brow and drive his long spear mercilessly through its head.

“Thud…”

The small zombie’s body fell to the ground, and another one followed suit, falling to the ground before it had even reached Li Ming as he wielded his long spear with calculated precision.

After killing off the fourth zombie, Li Ming, clutching his long spear, waited again. After seeing no movement, he gradually moved forward, spear at the ready.

In a short while, he arrived at a fork in the road. He looked left and right. The resident’s door to the left was tightly shut while the large door to the right was wide open.

The two large and two small zombies on the ground had just run out from that house. Li Ming took a deep breath, picked up a marble from the ground, and forcefully threw it forward.

“Groan…”

A vague zombie groan emanated from the house, but there was no sign of movement. Li Ming frowned intently, looking at the empty house in front of him with his heart pounding in his chest.

After some thought, he gritted his teeth and slowly approached the house with his spear at the ready, until a zombie, sitting in a wheelchair with its body mangled, started to roar upwards madly.

Li Ming furrowed his brow, took a shot to the head, and put it out of its misery.

“Hiss~”

The spearhead was drawn from the zombie’s skull, and the room finally quieted down, save for the sound of the wind passing through the window and door gaps.

Looking towards the door, a whole family had died together. Li Ming let out a sigh of relief, closed the open window in the bedroom, and the space finally fell into complete silence.

He felt somewhat weak, but looking around at the splashed blackish-red blood and some chunks of flesh, he couldn’t sit down to rest. After some thought, he began searching the room for useful supplies.

“You’re dead, but someone has to live. Leaving these things here is a waste, so I’ll take them.”

He murmured as he headed to the kitchen first. Seeing the plentiful food inside, he was quite pleased.

The house was well-stocked with food. Li Ming packed found items like oil, salt, vinegar, rice, flour, fruits, and vegetables into his backpack. He also found two salted fish and a large string of bacon weighing over thirty pounds.

He packed these items into two backpacks. Other items such as the owners’ clothing were of no use. Li Ming also found a car key, a large bag of emergency medicines, and a cleaver.

Before he left, he rummaged through the bedroom and found some gold jewelry. He hesitated for a moment before putting it in his pocket.

Lastly, he took a box of condoms from the bedside table, picked up two buckets of pure water from the living room, and left the place with two backpacks.

Stepping over the zombies strewn across the hallway, he climbed down the stairs from the seventh floor to the fifth and returned home.

As he closed and locked the door, Zhang Yuan inside was startled. She sighed heavily in relief when she saw it was Li Ming who had returned.

“You’re back so soon.”

Zhang Yuan had been waiting in the living room for a while and was about to return to her room. Upon seeing what Li Ming brought back, her eyes lit up, and she hurriedly came to greet him, taking stuff from him and asking curiously while doing so.

“I went upstairs to check and found this whole family had turned into zombies on the seventh floor, so I took care of them and found these things. Put them in my room.”

Li Ming smiled, handed over a string of bacon to Zhang Yuan to carry, and began offloading his own haul into his room, setting down a bucket and a half of pure water before finally unpacking the backpack and sighing in relief.

Zhang Yuan pursed her lips at his revelation and said no more, but the unease in her features deepened, especially when she noticed the dirt on Li Ming’s spearhead.

Li Ming didn’t pay much attention. He finished sorting at home, then put a box of condoms by his bed and gold jewelry in his drawer.

“I’m going to rest for a bit, then go out again.”

After doing all this, Li Ming couldn’t help but sit back down, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He felt a delay in the weakness that washed over him.

He realized it was the aftermath of the challenge and an intense experience far removed from his peaceful life. It made him feel slightly weak and drained.

This is the fear that sets in afterward.

“I’ll fan you.”

Zhang Yuan had also put away the large string of cured meat. Seeing Li Ming’s condition now, she hurried over with a fan to cool him.

Li Ming took a deep breath, leaning back in his chair with half-closed eyes, his hands casually roving over Zhang Yuan’s thigh in front of him, releasing his inner tension and stress.

Zhang Yuan moved a couple of steps closer to him, allowing his touch while continuing to fan him with the fan in her hand.
