Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 123: Returning
Chapter 123: Returning
After a few hours of non-stop driving, they finally arrived at the Camel Tower area, exhausted but relieved.
Their journey back had been arduous; it was already evening, and poor visibility made navigation through the flooded area particularly challenging.
At one point, one of the boats was severely damaged by unseen debris hidden beneath the water, causing panic among the group.
Now, everyone was carefully maneuvering their boats, closely following the motorboat as it led the way through the treacherous waters.
"General, we’re almost at our building. Given the situation outside, I suggest you take shelter first and continue your journey in the morning," Ethan suggested, his voice steady but laced with concern.
The General Kaiser considered the offer for a moment, weighing the risks.
"I appreciate your concern, but we need to return as soon as possible. We’ll visit once we settle into the military," he replied firmly.
Ethan nodded, respecting the General’s decision, and chose not to press the matter further.
"Mind if we borrow this motorboat? I’ll return it later," General Kaiser said, his tone casual, though he hoped they would agree; venturing out without it would be difficult.
"Sure, just make sure to bring it back in one piece," Ethan replied.
"Don’t worry, I’ll handle it well. By the way, are you considering seeking refuge in Military A? This disaster isn’t going to end anytime soon. If you’re interested, I’d like to invite you all to join us. We’re currently forming a base."
Ethan was about to decline when Elena interrupted, winking at him to take the lead.
"We’re doing fine for now, Uncle, but if things really go beyond saving, don’t disdain us if we seek your help," she replied.
The military in City A would definitely establish its own base.
In her past life, this base had been highly sought during ongoing disasters. Since they were offering free passage, why not take advantage of the opportunity?
This general would be one of the leaders at the base, and befriending him would undoubtedly bring numerous advantages.
"Sure, it was all thanks to you that I made it out alive," General Kaiser replied with a smile. freewēbnoveℓ.com
Afterward, they finally arrived at the building. Everyone exchanged their goodbyes, and they began to walk upstairs, accompanied by the Benette family, who had chosen to stay for their daughter and would return once the typhoon was finally over.
The marine institute accepted their decision, considering it would be best for the family to take care of each other. So, the military left without them.
"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Benette! Welcome to Building C," Elena greeted them warmly.
"Thank you, Elena, for helping my daughter. Please don’t call me Mrs. Benette; just call me Aunt Meriam."
"Okay, Aunt Meriam. How are things at the research institute?"
Mrs. Benette then shared their experiences, and they chatted happily as they walked up the stairs. The water was still rising, and it had now completely flooded the ninth floor.
"Do you think the building seems quiet?" Lydia asked, having noticed the unusual stillness around them.
"I think so. The residents living in the corridor likely entered the evacuation center," Oslo replied.
"That’s the best outcome. At least no one will try to bother us anymore," Lydia said, thinking that with fewer residents, they would have less to deal with.
Elena almost laughed at their conversation. For now, there were only a few residents left, but after two days, if she were not mistaken, they would return later.
The residents would soon realize that the evacuation they thought would provide them with basic needs had turned into a disastrous nightmare.
With constant brawling for space, sanitation issues, and rampant theft, it was becoming increasingly difficult to live peacefully.
"Who knows, maybe they will return later, considering there are a lot of issues when many people gather at the evacuation center. It might get overwhelmed," Elena commented, warning them about the potential problems that could arise.
"Indeed. Well, let’s just mind our business, and I hope they won’t provoke us and will be smart enough this time," Ethan replied
After a few walks, they stood at the gate, and Elena instructed Xander to turn off the electric power. Once they reached the 27th floor, Elena paused and looked at the group.
"Rest for the meantime. We’ve been out for almost a day; let’s have a proper rest."
Everyone agreed and entered their units. Elena and Ethan then continued walking to Grandpa Caldwell’s unit to update them on their situation.
"Wife, are you tired? Come lean on me for a while," Ethan said, wrapping his arm around her waist and helping her walk slowly.
"What are you doing? We’re almost at Grandpa’s unit. I can still manage," Elena resisted, but as she felt the warmth of his muscles, she surrendered and leaned against him, grateful for the support.
"I noticed you massaging your back a while ago. Do you feel fine now?" he asked, concern etched on his face.
"Yeah, I don’t know. It never happened to me before," Elena laughed, trying to brush it off. "I guess I’m just a little bit tired."
She shrugged, attributing it to fatigue and the recoil from the machine gun—something her body wasn’t quite used to.
"Next time, don’t carry heavy things. Look at your body; you’re so thin. You should eat more," Ethan insisted.
"But I’ve been eating a lot lately! I should go on a diet," she countered playfully.
"Who said so? You’re only eating a little. Don’t listen to them," he replied, shaking his head.
"Fine. I’ll just focus on intense exercises later. I need to build at least a little muscle; look at my arms—they’re so thin and soft."
"Yeah, so soft. I like it," Ethan replied, gently touching her arm, a smile spreading across his face.
Elena felt that something was off in his words, but she couldn’t quite pinpoint it.
However, upon seeing his loving gaze, which seemed to proclaim a deep affection, she dismissed her thoughts and focused instead on his firm muscles.
Soon, they arrived and knocked on the door.
Butler Aki opened it, revealing a room filled with people chatting and discussing their tasks inside the space.
Grandpa Caldwell was busy boosting his livestock farming, which produced a large quantity of eggs and meat each day, while Grandpa Ford focused on his fruit farming.
He had already planted a variety of fruits, including mangoes, peaches, and grapes, and they were starting to ripen, bringing him joy for all his hard work.
Thankfully, the Southern Inventory had the feature of being static, ensuring that the fruits and meat would never spoil.
"I think around five days from now, the grapes will finally be ready to be harvested," Grandpa Ford said with enthusiasm.
"Woohoo, Gwandpa! Can little Mia also help?"
"Alright, just handle them with care. I’ll teach you tomorrow how to harvest fruits."
"Yay! But I still need to wearn scuba diving. Bwother Oslo will teach us later, right, Bwother Koby?"
"Hmmp, yeah, Grandpa. I want to learn to swim too."
"Then, after you learn scuba diving, just come to me, and I’ll teach you how to harvest fruits."
They nodded with joy and ran off to play with their toys. Watching them, Elena’s heart warmed.
Life in the apocalypse was tough, but as long as they stayed together, cared for one another, and supported each other, she felt a deep sense of contentment.
Elena then interrupted Grandpa Caldwell and Grandpa Ford’s discussion, announcing their presence. "Grandpa, we are back."
"Good to hear you’re finally back! How is everything?" Grandpa Caldwell asked, his eyes lighting up with concern.
"We hoarded a lot of jade and antiques. Plus, we also found Lydia’s parents, and they’re currently resting," Elena replied, sharing the highlights of their journey and the encounter with the mutated beast.
After a brief conversation, Ethan noticed Elena’s tired expression and said, "Grandpa, we’ll head back for now. We’re pretty worn out and need to rest for a while." He wanted to give her a massage to help her relax and ease her fatigue.
"Go ahead," Grandpa Ford agreed, giving them a nod of understanding.
They left and returned to their unit. Ethan then retrieved a basin filled with warm water, wanting to massage Elena’s feet first.
Knowing this, Elena felt happy being pampered.
"Husband, you’re so good to me. Haist, we were supposed to go to the library, but the plan seems to be changing."
"Well, we can go there maybe tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Wife, it’s done. Let’s take a rest for a while," Ethan said, then prepared their bed.
Although the portable houses provided comfort and security, they decided to start sleeping in their unit today to adapt to their new situation.
Elena quickly changed into her sleeping dress, waiting for her husband, but soon fatigue overcame her, and she drifted off to sleep.
When Ethan returned and saw her like this, he moved closer, wrapping his arms around her.
He leaned in, kissing her forehead and then her lips, whispering, "Sleep well, wife."
