Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 88: Kids? Nope.
Chapter 88: Kids? Nope.
As they paddled the kayak toward the road leading to Building D, Elena noticed that the water was rising to waist level.
She couldn’t help but wonder how intense the downpour must have been to cause such rapid flooding in less than an hour.
’The streets are now flooded; soon, the water will reach neck level.’
They had chosen a three-seater inflatable kayak: Ethan sat in the back, providing strength and steering control; Elena occupied the middle seat, using her strength to help paddle; and Oslo was in the front, guiding the kayak in the right direction while keeping an eye on the path ahead.
After drinking the well water for an extended period, Elena’s strength increased daily—so much so that she was stronger than most men.
While she could navigate this area independently, she knew that relying on teamwork was still the best approach.
"Let’s row to the other side; the current there isn’t that strong," Oslo suggested as he assessed the area.
He spotted a building that blocked the water from rushing toward the street, which would help them maneuver the kayak more easily.
As the rain poured heavily, making it difficult for them to see, Elena quickly retrieved three pairs of waterproof goggles she had brought a while ago from the gear store to help them navigate the poor visibility.
"Use these goggles; otherwise, you won’t be able to see in this situation," Elena said as she handed the goggles to them.
They paddled toward the building, and finally, Ethan soon realized why this side was deeper.
"This area probably has a downward slope, which explains the increased water depth compared to other spots," he noted after carefully observing their surroundings.
Elena nodded in acknowledgment. Thankfully, they had decided to switch to the kayak; otherwise, the RV would have been stuck, unable to move through the rising water.
"Wife, the rainwater is accumulating in the kayak," Ethan pointed out, gripping the paddle tightly as he maneuvered away from the strong current.
"Okay, I’ll focus on getting the water out," Elena replied.
She then retrieved a small bucket and began scooping the water out, determined to keep their kayak as light as possible.
After a few minutes of paddling and stabilizing the kayak against the strong wind and current, they finally emerged from the sloped area and arrived at a location where the water level was only knee-high.
There, they spotted signs of human activity; most people sought refuge in supermarkets and other buildings due to the heavy rain that had caused flooding.
They might be waiting for the rain to stop, but unfortunately, they had no idea that this rain would never cease.
Elena squinted toward the nearby supermarket and noticed that the electricity was still operational.
’It is most likely powered by a generator.’
"This city is still functioning well," she observed. "Look at the people; they don’t seem bothered. They probably think this rain will pass soon."
Ethan raised his brows, thinking that at least these people would have food during the storm.
"Let’s find a secluded area first," he suggested. "We can’t use the kayak anymore; we might hit something hard."
They rowed toward an area where people usually didn’t go, but before they could reach it, some individuals shouted from a nearby building, demanding their kayak.
"Hey! My family is rich, and if you take me to my destination, I’ll pay you a lot of money!" one shouted.
Another called out, "Tsk. Don’t listen to him. My family is in the military. If you take me home, I’ll make sure you get a reward."
Most of the people in the building were anxious to reach their destinations as quickly as possible, but the relentless rain made it impossible for them to pass through the downward slope with their cars, leaving them feeling impatient.
Seeing the rare kayak being paddled by two men and a woman, they viewed it as a valuable means of transport and wanted to take it for themselves.
"Come on, speak up!" one of them yelled.
Elena did not bother to respond and continued searching for a secluded spot. They soon found a locked and deserted store and then dragged the kayak inside.
After carefully checking to ensure no one was inside, they finally relaxed.
"Wife, you’re drenched. Quickly change your clothes; otherwise, you’ll catch a cold," Ethan said with concern.
Hearing this, Oslo chuckled. Where was the cold man he was used to? His chief was now different from what he remembered.
’Haist! Chief, you’ve really changed by the power of love.’
"How about you? Let’s go together," Elena replied.
Ethan smiled at her.
’See, she was seducing me again.’
"You go ahead, wife; I’ll follow later."
Seeing that they would probably stay to monitor the store, Elena then entered the space and changed her clothes.
Afterward, she used her [Telepathy] skill to contact Grandpa Caldwell, who was currently at the warehouse, to enter the space.
Inside, she immediately briefed them about the situation and pulled them toward her location.
"Granddaughter, can we ride the RV now?"
"Yes, Grandpa. This area is at a higher elevation, and although the water has started to accumulate, it will take some time to rise significantly. If we move now, we can reach Camel Tower before it becomes too dangerous."
"Then let’s go."
Elena was about to go outside and retrieve the RV from space when she noticed her husband busy storing something. Out of curiosity, she approached him.
"What are you doing?"
Ethan smiled as he looked at the products he had found; they were all baby items.
"Wife, this store sells infant products. Let’s store them in the space. Who knows, we might need them someday."
Elena simply nodded and wasn’t particularly interested.
’Well, this infant milk could be a good, healthy food source.’
She considered how this infant food might serve as an alternative source of vitamins and didn’t expect to use it on herself soon.
After all, she had no plans to have kids in this apocalypse.
"Let me store it. Since you need to touch each item individually to store them in your [Inventory], it will take a lot of time," Elena suggested.
After they stored the items, she urged her husband to change clothes before they rode the RV to Camel Tower.
"Husband, change your clothes first. You’ve been drenched for a while now."
"Okay, wait for me. I’ll change immediately."
Everyone smiled, enjoying their interaction, especially Grandpa Caldwell, who kept smiling as he watched them.
’Can I have great-grandchildren soon?’
Oslo felt awkward that no one was trying to ask him.
’Haist, I should find a potential partner for myself.’
He then followed Ethan into the space to change clothes.
Unbeknownst to him, his life would change in the coming months, as the potential he prayed for would soon shake up his world.
