Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 96: Water keeps rising
Chapter 96: Water keeps rising
Everyone gathered in the living room to discuss their evening plans, particularly who would take the watch tonight. Although the residents still adhered to the law, Elena felt uneasy about the potential dangers lurking around.
Her suspicions centered on the manager; she sensed he had his own agenda. From the moment they arrived, his behavior and responses to the residents’ concerns seemed unusual, as if he were scheming something shady against the residents of Building C.
"Let’s establish a nightly rotation for guarding, excluding the elderly and young children," Elena proposed firmly. "Everyone else needs to participate."
Grandpa Caldwell wanted to disagree; he also wished to volunteer for the night watch, but his weary body compelled him to reluctantly go along with the arrangement.
"That sounds good," Ethan replied.
"Each floor will take turns guarding every night. For instance, tonight it’s the residents of the 26th floor, and tomorrow night it will be the 27th floor’s turn, and so on," he added.
"Since no one currently lives in the 26th-floor units, let’s start with the 27th-floor, where I live. I’ll be the first one to keep watch tonight," Oslo suggested, referring to his unit, 2701.
"You’ll be watching alone? No, I’ll join you later," Uncle Anthony responded.
Elena did not stop them, believing that this would foster teamwork. They needed to learn to work together, as most future tasks would rely on collaboration.
"Alright, then. Tonight, it will be Olso and Uncle Anthony; tomorrow night, Xander and Andrei," Elena proposed, her voice firm yet encouraging.
Everyone agreed, and they concluded their discussion about the guarding arrangements.
Elena then asked about the manager of Building C, believing that knowing your enemies could give you an edge.
"Oslo, Xander, do you have any information about the manager here?" Elena asked.
Oslo raised his brows, but upon realizing that the manager’s attitude had seemed strange last time, he quickly answered everything he knew.
"Well, he’s polite and accommodating. He always monitors our renovations every few days, saying that he needs to ensure we don’t disturb the nearby residents."
"I agree with Oslo that he is indeed polite, but I have also noticed him lurking around some units. He has been particularly active these past few days, especially after the earthquake," Xander added.
Everyone could sense that the manager was hiding something, given how he behaved.
"Let’s stay vigilant around him; I suspect he’s plotting something connected to the recent robbery. He could be one of the suspects—or even the mastermind behind it," Elena warned, quickly sharing her findings.
Everyone nodded, and Elena adjourned the discussion, prompting them to return to their individual tasks. Oslo and Xander then instructed the newly marked individuals to enter the space as they would guide and introduce them.
"Sis Ewe, I want to enter Pawadise. I want to join them. Pwease!" Little Mia pleaded, acting cute.
"Alright, little Mia, you can be their little tour guide," Elena said, patting her head.
"Yay!" Little Mia exclaimed joyfully.
One by one, they left the room and entered the space. Oslo and Xander then began to guide the newly marked individuals within the space.
Inside, they were mesmerized by the beauty of the space. The central Haven community center was now filled with trees and flowers, creating a sense of tranquility and harmony.
Oslo and Xander then introduced the five sectors of the area: the Central Haven, where individuals could gather and rest; the Northern Blacksoil, ideal for herb planting; the Western Fertile Soil, suitable for farming; the Southern Inventory, where goods were stored; and the Eastern Lake, which provided the water source.
"That sector is the Eastern Lake, where our water source is located. Do you see that building? That’s the water refilling station. Ramon, you will be the manager of this sector, as discussed, and Andrei will be responsible for feeding the aquatic animals in the pond," Xander informed them.
"Got it, Xander," Ramon replied positively.
"You can swim in this lake, but I suggest you only do so if you’ve completed your tasks or aren’t busy. As I mentioned earlier, we have a three-hour limit inside. You can spend two hours and thirty minutes on tasks in Paradise, while the remaining thirty minutes should be reserved for emergencies. So, make sure not to use it all. Do you understand?" Oslo added.
"Yes," the people inside agreed in unison.
"Okay, let’s proceed to the Western Fertile Soil sector."
"Bwother Oslo, you forgot something," Little Mia said in her cute voice.
"Oh, Little Mia, tell your brother what he forgot," Oslo replied teasingly.
"We have Dolphie here swimming awound. You haven’t introduced them!"
"I almost forgot about that. Thank you, tour guide Mia!"
"Hmmp," Little Mia replied, adopting her cute tour guide attitude.
There, they saw a pair of dolphins jumping and swimming around the lake. Little Koby was excited and wanted to look closer, but he held back, seeing that everyone was about to leave. He decided to tell his brother Xander later to let him have a good look.
Everyone was busy touring the space, marveling at the sights around them. Meanwhile, Elena and Ethan decided to return to their unit to rest.
They said goodbye to Grandpa Caldwell and asked Butler Aki to inform anyone who inquired that they had already gone home.
"Wife, the bed is ready. Let’s sleep now," Ethan said, gesturing toward the neatly made bed.
"Okay, husband," Elena replied with a smile, changing into her comfortable sleeping dress.
Exhausted from the day’s activities, they quickly fell asleep in each other’s arms. The warmth of their embrace brought comfort, allowing them to drift into a peaceful slumber.
Elena was sleeping peacefully when an alarm suddenly sounded throughout the building. Startled, she quickly woke up, trying to determine the cause of the alarm.
"Wife, sleep a little longer. I’ll go check the situation."
"No, let’s check together."
They could hear the typhoon intensifying outside, accompanied by howling winds, as they quickly put on their jackets to combat the chilly night.
As they opened the door, they noticed others gathering around Grandpa Caldwell’s unit.
Fortunately, the electricity had returned, illuminating the corridor and making it easier to see.
"What happened?" Grandpa Ford asked.
"No idea, Grandpa. Let’s go inside first; it’s chilly out here," Ethan replied. novelbuddy.cσ๓
They hurried into the unit, and Elena quickly checked the group chat.
She saw that the messages were about the rising water level gradually flooding the lobby. The guard on duty had sounded the alarm to alert everyone of the situation.
Residents on the lower floors were in a state of panic, bewildered by the water entering their building. This area was one of the highest elevations, making flooding seem unlikely. They struggled to comprehend how the heavy rainfall could result in such an unexpected crisis.
Well, they had underestimated the severity of this typhoon, and now they were desperately trying to reach the manager for a solution. When they couldn’t get in touch with him, they attempted to call the emergency hotline, but all they received was a busy tone.
Unit 0101: "Manager, the water is now in the lobby. Do we have a solution for this?"
Unit 0102: "Yes, if this rain continues for a few more hours, I’m afraid the first floor will also be flooded."
Unit 0202: "Manager, where are you? Now is the time for you to provide us with a solid answer! Has anyone tried to contact the emergency hotline? It doesn’t seem to be working."
The residents on the lower floors were doing their best to get the manager’s attention while also trying to contact the emergency hotline, but there was no response from either. Frustration mounted as the group chat buzzed with complaints and curses.
Elena peered out at the raging typhoon outside, but the evening darkness obscured her view completely. Still, she could sense the storm’s intensity increasing, the howling winds and pounding rain making it clear that the situation was worsening.
She then checked social media, where posts about their alarming situation made it clear that things had become critical. People were now pleading for help from the government, as their homes were already flooded.
"The water is now in the lobby," Elena informed them, her voice steady and calm despite the rising panic around the residents. "If this continues, chaos will soon engulf the building."
She wanted to convey the situation’s urgency without inciting fear, urging everyone to prepare for what might come next.
Just like in her past life, the people initially banded together to help one another. However, as the realization set in that the typhoon would not relent and the water continued to rise floor by floor, their morale began to deteriorate.
With the government halting assistance, desperation took hold. Eyes that once reflected compassion grew sinister as individuals began to assess each other’s worth. Everyday, conflicts erupted, and when food became scarce, the unthinkable occurred—killing for survival became a grim reality.
Everyone understood and chose not to ask further questions. They knew that the chaotic days ahead begun.
"The water has stopped," Grandma Ford told them, attempting to clean her hands on the faucet, but no water flowed.
This news would undoubtedly lead to more chaos.
