Ascension of the Eternal Game-Chapter 21: Battle of Eldergrove
Chapter 21 - Battle of Eldergrove
The night sky above Eldergrove blazed with streaks of fire and shadow, the air heavy with the stench of burning wood and the metallic bite of blood. The town, once a quiet haven nestled among ancient trees, was now a battlefield. Shadow creatures—hulking beasts of darkness with claws like obsidian—tore through the streets, their guttural roars mingling with the cries of the townsfolk. Some fought back with pitchforks and rusty swords, their faces etched with desperation, while others fled toward the central square, clutching children and whatever they could carry.
Alex Kain stood atop a barricade of overturned carts, his sword gripped tight, its blade catching the orange glow of nearby torches. His chest heaved, sweat stinging his eyes, but his resolve was iron. He wasn't the hesitant player who'd stumbled into Eryndor months ago; he was a warrior now, forged in fire and shadow, and the people of Eldergrove needed him.
"Lyra, take the eastern flank!" he barked, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Kael, you're with me up front. Elara, Thorne—hold the rear and keep those spells flying!"
Lyra Vex shot him a quick nod, her red hair a wild tangle as she bolted toward the eastern gate, where shadow wolves gnashed at the wooden palisade. Her sword gleamed as she moved, a dance of steel and purpose. Kael Stoneforge grinned beside Alex, twirling his twin daggers with the ease of a man born for battle. Behind them, Elara Moonwhisper and Thorne of the Order of the Eternal Gate took position, their staffs alight with swirling arcane energy.
The shadow army surged forward, a tide of red-eyed malice. Alex tightened his grip, tapping into his Skill Synthesis—the gift that set him apart in this world. He had Lightrend Strike, a slashing burst of light that shredded shadow barriers, but Vira's forces were relentless, and her dark magic loomed large. He needed defense, too.
Inhaling sharply, he focused, blending Lightrend Strike with a skill Elara had taught him: Radiant Shield. Mana pulsed through his veins, hot and electric, knitting the abilities into something new.
Synthesis Successful! New Skill: Radiant Ward
Radiant Ward: Creates a protective barrier of light around allies, deflecting shadow-based attacks and reducing damage. Cost: 40 Mana.
A dome of golden light flared around them, its edges shimmering like molten glass. The shadow creatures slammed into it, their forms crackling and smoking as the barrier held.
"Sweet move, Alex!" Kael shouted, already leaping forward to carve through a dazed beast.
But the respite was brief. From the town's heart, a figure ascended, silver hair streaming like a banner in the wind. Vira Thorn hovered above the square, her laughter sharp and cruel, her hands weaving threads of shadow that birthed more monstrosities below.
"You think your little tricks will save them?" she called, her voice ringing with dark power. "Garrick Voss has plans for this world, and Eldergrove is just the first to fall."
Alex's stomach twisted. Garrick Voss—the name that shadowed every step of their journey, a player like him, but one who craved dominion over the Eternal Gate. If Vira was his blade, this battle was a test.
"We take her out!" Alex yelled. "She's the key!"

Lyra rejoined them, her breath ragged but her eyes sharp. "She's stronger—look at her. The Shadow Wyrm's essence is in her now."
Elara paled, clutching her staff. "That's why the crystal didn't stop her. She's fused with it."
Thorne's gravelly voice cut in. "The Order knows how to break such bonds. There's a ritual, but it needs time."
"Then we give you that time," Alex said, meeting each companion's gaze. "Lyra, Kael, with me. Elara, help Thorne."
They split with practiced precision. Alex, Lyra, and Kael charged toward Vira, weaving through the chaos of snapping jaws and slashing claws. Vira's eyes glinted as she raised her hands, unleashing a barrage of shadow bolts—jagged spears of darkness that screamed through the air.
Alex thrust his sword upward, summoning Radiant Ward. The barrier flared, absorbing the onslaught, but the impact drove him down, his knees grinding into the dirt. Mana drained from him, a cold ache spreading through his limbs. Lyra and Kael pressed the attack, cutting down the shadows that swarmed to Vira's defense.
Vira's gaze fixed on Alex, her lips curling. "Persistent little hero. Garrick will enjoy breaking you."
He forced himself up, jaw tight. "Not today."
He glanced at Lyra, a silent signal passing between them. She darted left, her blade a whirlwind, while he veered right, splitting Vira's attention. Kael melted into the shadows, his rogue training guiding him behind her. His daggers flashed, but a wall of darkness snapped up, hurling him back with a grunt.
"Pathetic," Vira spat, lashing out with a tendril of shadow that cracked like a whip.
Alex seized the opening, swinging with Lightrend Strike. Light blazed from his sword, shattering her barrier in a shower of sparks. Vira stumbled, clutching her side, her snarl feral.
"How?" she hissed.
He didn't waste breath on a reply, pressing forward with Lyra at his side. Her strikes were surgical, each one testing Vira's weakening defenses. But Vira wasn't done. With a shriek, she summoned a vortex of shadow, a maelstrom that roared around her, flinging Alex and Lyra back across the cobblestones.
Her body twisted, growing, scales erupting across her skin as the Shadow Wyrm's power consumed her. She towered over them now, a monstrous hybrid, her claws rending the air, her voice a thunderous growl. "Behold true strength!"
The ground shook as she advanced, buildings crumbling under her fury. Alex's heart sank, doubt clawing at him. They couldn't match this. He looked to Elara and Thorne, where a ring of light pulsed brighter with each chant.
"Keep her busy!" Thorne roared. "Almost there!"
Lyra grabbed Alex's arm, her grip firm. "We've got this. Together."
Kael staggered up, blood streaking his face but his daggers steady. "Time to ground this beast."
Alex nodded, digging deep. He needed more—something to match her. His Skill Synthesis burned within him, and he reached for every skill he'd mastered: Mana-Flame Strike, Radiant Ward, Lightrend Strike. Could he fuse them all?
Mana surged, wild and searing, as he wove them together.
Synthesis Successful! New Skill: Dawnbreaker
Dawnbreaker: A devastating area attack that unleashes a burst of radiant energy, purging shadow and dealing massive damage to dark entities. Cost: 100 Mana.
His sword blazed, light spilling from it like a sunrise. "Get clear!" he shouted.
Lyra and Kael fell back, and Alex drove his blade into the earth. The Dawnbreaker erupted—a radiant shockwave that swept the battlefield, incinerating shadow creatures in its path. Vira reared back, her scales searing, her roar one of agony.
Simultaneously, Elara and Thorne's ritual peaked, a lance of light piercing Vira's chest. Her form fractured, shadows unraveling, and with a final scream, she dissolved into nothingness.
Silence fell, broken only by the crackle of dying fires. Alex collapsed to one knee, his vision swimming, mana exhaustion dragging at him. Lyra was there, her hands steadying him, her breath warm against his ear.
"You did it," she murmured.
"We did," he rasped, managing a faint smile.
But the quiet shattered as a figure stepped from the shadows. Clad in dark armor, his presence was a cold weight. Garrick Voss surveyed the wreckage, his eyes like ice.
"Well done," he said, voice smooth and cutting. "Vira was a useful distraction. But the real game begins now."
Alex struggled up, sword trembling in his grip. "What's your endgame, Voss?"
Garrick's smile was a blade's edge. "The Eternal Gate. And you, Alex Kain, are its key."
A shadow portal yawned behind him, and before Alex could lunge, Garrick stepped through, vanishing with a whisper of malice. "Until next time."
Alex stared at the empty space, his companions gathering around him, their faces grim. The battle was theirs, but the war loomed larger than ever.
