Avatar: Mage of All Elements-Chapter 106
Chapter 106 - 106
I had the hardest part ahead of me. Finding those who were good at hiding. For a damned week I'd been climbing around the place where the spirits I needed were, but I hadn't found anything. On my way back to the wolves, I met Biakko.
He was a white fox, and the scrolls said he was a messenger of the gods. I didn't know if it was true, but maybe she knew where the spirits were. Since I had nothing to lose, I approached her.
«Excuse me, do you know where the Shakko live?»
«Human, what do you need them for?» she asked with interest.
«I want to ask them for help», I mumbled politely.
«I doubt they'll help you», she shook her head, «They need help themselves», she muttered sadly, but finally looked at me with interest. I tensed, «And what do you want from them?»
«I can show you, can I?» I asked and after she nodded, I handed her the package of memories.
«A dangerous road you have traveled», she shook her head, «But the Shakko will help you and your men», she stood and walked toward me, «Come, I will take you.»
Shakko are red foxes. They have different abilities, but the main ones are illusions and elements. In the spirit world, they mostly hide from stronger spirits, and in the real world, they play tricks on people.
Soon, we came to a large forest with tall grass. Byakko made a strange sound, and after a moment, fox faces appeared from the grass, and one fox ran up to me.
«She will take you to the head of the pack», she spoke slowly, «You will give her the same memories you gave me. She will help. And I must go.»
And she turned and walked in the opposite direction. I followed her with a glance and looked at the fox.
«So, shall we go?» I asked with a smile. She nodded and ran into the forest, and I ran with her.
We didn't run for long. A hundred meters and another small clearing where there were no trees and no grass. But there were many foxes. Their red color made my eyes water, but I was interested in something else.
If in the forest there were ordinary foxes, almost indistinguishable from their earthly counterparts, in the clearing I could see the opposite. All the foxes had at least two tails, and the closer to the center, the more tails. In the center of the clearing sat the largest fox, about my size, with seven tails.
The vixen who had accompanied me ran up to her and squeaked something, which made the seven-tailed one look at me.
«Human», she said in a velvety voice, «Biakko's messenger?»
«She's the one who brought me here», I said in agreement. I did not know how to deal with them, as they were not seen much.
«Why have you come?» she raised herself a little, and I saw that she was wounded. To be exact, the wound is old now, but it's a great hindrance to her life. As a medical man of many years, I can say with authority.
«To help my people», I said humbly, «And to help you», I added, remembering White Fox's words.
«I have been offered help before», she pointed her head at the scar, «And while there is truth in what you say, help comes in many forms», she muttered with some lingering pain.
«I can prove it if you let me», I looked her firmly in the eyes. A chance I don't want to lose. She, on the other hand, hesitated.
«Okay», she nodded slowly and the foxes parted, clearing the way for me to approach her. I went over and gathered my memories, my wishes, hopes, fears and dreams and gave them to her. It was probably unnecessary, but I just felt like it.
«You've chosen a dangerous path», she shook her head, «The world may reject you, but I see you've taken precautions», she nodded her head in agreement at the last one, «Only you've chosen the wrong path, the one we're not used to. But I like the result», she thought for a moment, «Good. We will help your people. That way we will prevent our own destruction and ensure our own survival. I will go into battle with you.»
«But I was going to ask the wolves to do it», I murmured a little surprised, «That way you wouldn't have to risk it.»
«I'm old now», she shook her head, «Yes, and the wound makes it hard to live», she smiled at me, «And I'm stronger than him, even in my wounded form.»
«But you're going to die», I said in shock.
«There is no shame in dying for something like this», she smiled somehow sad now, «But I have a request. If you survive, take my baby into my soul», she pulled the little fox cub out from under her.
«I promise», I murmured, «But only if I survive and it works.»
«Then let's begin.»
And she howled. It was both terrifying and beautiful. Gradually, all the foxes disappeared from the clearing, until only the seven-tailed one remained. When she stopped howling, I approached her.

«My name is Linya», she jumped into me, and I began to change.
