Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Shadow Assassin's Assault, Spirit Killing

The third and final trial began, and chaos erupted immediately.

Most participants scattered in all directions, desperate to avoid being targeted by others.

Fear was in the air, and everyone was on edge.

But one person stood out from the rest.

This man wasn't running away.

Instead, his eyes were locked on Karl.

He had noticed something: that random guy was summoning strange creatures, what he called "spirit monsters."

The man had seen the video of Karl's first trial, so he knew these weren't ordinary monsters, they were spirits.

But even with that knowledge, he didn't care.

'Monsters and human kill at the same time, jackpot,' the man thought with a grin as he dashed toward Karl, daggers gleaming in his hands.

He was no ordinary fighter.

His profession was S-Rank [Shadow Assassin], a class known for its incredible speed and deadly precision.

While it wasn't the rarest profession, it was undeniably powerful.

Karl sensed the man rushing toward him and turned to face him.

But Karl's expression wasn't one of fear or surprise.

Instead, it was a warning.

"Don't attack them!" Karl shouted, his voice firm.

The assassin laughed, dismissing Karl's words as nothing more than a bluff.

"Nice try, dumbass!" he sneered as he closed the distance, his daggers aimed at one of Karl's summons: the [Frenzied Rabbit].

But Karl knew something the assassin didn't.

He had given his summons two strict rules, rules they were bound to follow no matter what.

The first rule was to protect each other if possible, but never to sacrifice themselves for another.

The second rule was more critical: do not kill humans unless attacked first, if a human initiated combat, the spirits were allowed to defend themselves.

And now, the assassin was about to trigger both rules.

He lunged at the [Frenzied Rabbit], his daggers slicing through the air.

But before the blades could connect, a massive, jagged sword intercepted the attack.

Clang!

The daggers were deflected, and the assassin stumbled back, his eyes widening in shock.

Karl sighed, "Damn it."

It was the [Orc King], one of Karl's strongest summons.

The towering creature had positioned itself between the assassin and the [Frenzied Rabbit], shielding its companion.

The Orc King didn't stop there: with a powerful shove, it sent the assassin flying backward.

And then, rule two came into play.

The assassin had attacked first, which meant the Orc King was now free to engage.

"Disgusting things," the assassin spat, regaining his footing and preparing to strike again.

But this time, the Orc King wasn't holding back.

It dodged the assassin's next attack with surprising agility, then swung its massive blade in a wide arc.

The assassin's eyes widened in disbelief.

SLASH!

In an instant, the man's head was severed from his body.

Ding!

[Orc King has slain Kevin Croner.]

A trial announcement followed shortly after.

[99 participants remain.]

Karl's expression shifted to one of mild surprise, but there was no regret in his eyes.

He had warned the man, and the consequences were his own doing.

Still, Karl couldn't help but feel a twinge of disdain.

He hadn't wanted it to come to this, but he wasn't about to change his spirits' rules for someone who had tried to kill him.

Without hesitation, Karl moved forward and grabbed the [Spirit Orb] that had appeared above Kevin's body.

Ding!

[You have taken "Kevin Croner's" Spirit Orb.]

Inside the dark orb, Karl could see the image of two rotating daggers, a clear indication that Kevin's profession was now his to claim.

But there was no time to dwell on it.

The first wave of the trial had already begun.

A scoreboard materialized in the air, displaying the top ten participants.

[1. Sylas Crowell: 15 Points]

[2. Morgan Laval: 12 Points]

[3. Celeste Frost: 12 Points]

[4. Darius Blackthorn: 9 Points]

[5. Eira Stormbane: 9 Points]

[6. Louis Heaven: 6 Points]

[7. Oliver Aldric: 6 Points]

[8. Edric Valtair: 6 Points]

[9. Matthias Evren: 6 Points]

[10. Reynard Kessler: 3 Points]

Karl's name wasn't on the list yet, but he wasn't worried.

The trial had just started, and he knew he could catch up.

"Let's go," Karl ordered his summons, who nodded in unison and followed him.

It didn't take long for Karl to spot the first wave of monsters.

[Lizard Warrior - Level 16]

The creatures were humanoid figures with lizard-like heads and tails, wielding shields and weapons.

'Level 16,' Karl thought with a sigh. 'I can't get any spirit orbs from them.'

But that didn't mean he could ignore them.

Spectral Blade!

Karl summoned his weapon, a blade forged from five spirits, and charged forward without hesitation.

With a single swing, he cut down a [Lizard Warrior], the creature falling lifelessly to the ground.

His summons followed suit, each targeting their own enemies.

The [Armored Goblin Guards] moved in pairs, sticking together as Karl had instructed.

The [Frenzied Rabbit] stayed close to Karl, while the [Orc King] and [Alpha Dire Wolf] fought side by side.

Slash! Slash! Slash!

Notifications began to pop up as Karl and his summons eliminated monster after monster.

[You have slain Lizard Warrior.]

[Your Orc King has slain Lizard Warrior.]

[Your Armored Goblin Guard has slain Lizard Warrior...]

The first wave was relatively easy, with the only enemies being the [Lizard Warriors].

Karl glanced around and noticed that most participants were dominating as well.

After less than five minutes, a notification sounded.

Ding!

[You have eliminated all of the monsters from the First Wave, congratulations!]

[The Second Wave will now start.]

"Phew," Karl sighed, taking a moment to catch his breath.

He had handled the first wave well, even with the distraction at the start.

Surprisingly, no other participants had died during the wave.

Everyone was too focused on their own battles, and there were enough monsters to go around.

Karl checked his rank on the scoreboard.

[8. Karl Bloodborne: 87 Points.]

He was doing well, though he wasn't at the top yet.

Sylas, Celeste, and a few others were fighting for the lead, but Karl was confident.

If he kept this pace, he would have no problem securing a spot at [Starlight Academy].

'Come back,' Karl ordered his summons, and they immediately began to regroup.

The [Orc King] and [Alpha Dire Wolf] returned quickly, but something was wrong: the [Armored Goblin Guards] were missing.

Karl's eyes narrowed as he looked in the direction they had been fighting.

What he saw made his blood boil.

A group of three awakeners were attacking his goblins, slashing at them with their weapons and using their powers to kill them.

Karl was about to intervene, but it was too late.

[You have lost x4 Armored Goblin Guards.]

The notification was like a punch to the gut.

Karl clenched his fists, his anger rising.

He couldn't let this slide.

If he made excuses for these people, saying they didn't know the goblins were summons or that they looked like monsters, his spirits would keep dying, and he would be powerless to stop it.

No. He had to make a stand.

'I'll show you,' Karl thought, his eyes hardening as he took a step forward.

The time for warnings was over.
