Awakening: I Became a Legendary Spirit Summoner-Chapter 7 - : Spirit Rules, Spectral Blade Skill
Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Spirit Rules, Spectral Blade Skill
After parting ways with Celeste, Karl spent the next hour relentlessly hunting every monster that crossed his path in the [Living Forest].
His spirits proved invaluable, and his [Spirit Flames] continued to be a game-changer.
What stood out to Karl the most during this spree was the fact that summoning and utilizing his spirits required no mana.
Similarly, [Spirit Flames], for reasons he still didn't fully understand, demanded no mana either.
Mana was used for several applications but also mainly for skills.
The fact it didn't require mana would make it easier in the long run, though.
During this time, Karl discovered a few critical details about his spirits:
First, it was the fact that, as said before, summoning the spirits doesn't drain Karl in any way, shape, or form.
He could still fight alongside them, though it was mostly him just launching [Spirit Flames].
Second, there was a physical limit to how far his spirits could move from him.
To test this, Karl decided to experiment.
"Stay here," he ordered his [Frenzied Rabbit], "I'll head off with the others and see how far you can stay."
Taking the other three spirits with him, Karl jogged deeper into the forest, keeping an eye on the distance.
After a few moments, a notification appeared:
[Current distance limit reached: 100 meters.]
[The "Frenzied Rabbit" has been sent back to the "Summon Cemetery".]
"Got it," Karl muttered, summoning the rabbit back into the world.
If he went too far away from his spirits, aka 100 meters, then they would disappear, that was good to know.
And third, but not least, the most interesting feature of all: the spirits listened to any of Karl's commands, no matter what.
If he asked them to kill someone or something, they would.
If he asked them to kill each other or themselves, they would do it too.
And the most dangerous order of all:
"Hey, you," he said, pointing at the [Frenzied Rabbit] again, "Attack me—"
He barely had time to finish his sentence before the rabbit launched itself at him, claws aimed for his face.
"Holy shit!" Karl exclaimed, ducking just in time to avoid the attack. "Stop!"
The rabbit froze instantly, as if it had been switched off.
Karl let out a breath, "Guess even I'm not safe from my own summons."
These types of spirits didn't have a conscience and weren't sentient, meaning that they just followed orders.
It was imprinted into them since the moment they were summoned that they needed to "follow the orders" of their master.
Even if that meant harming him.
Though that meant that as long as he didn't give such an order, he would be safe.
Karl did wonder in what kind of situation he would need to ask his spirits to attack him, but who knows.
By the end of the hour, Karl had leveled up again, reaching level 3.
[You have reached level 3. You have gained 2 stat points for each of your stats.]
[Your "Spirit Cemetery" and "Summon Cemetery" limit has increased by 5.]
[Spirit Flames (E-Rank) Proficiency – 56%]
He also managed to acquire three new summons:
[Demonized Fox]
[Green Snake]
[Nature Bear].
In addition, Karl experimented with his [Absorb] ability, using it three times during his hunts.
Each attempt succeeded, granting him small but noticeable boosts to his attributes:
[Mana increased by 1.]
[Stamina increased by 2.]
[Strength increased by 2.]
Interestingly, the effects of [Absorb] seemed to be improving, granting more substantial increases than before.
Karl wiped some sweat from his brow and surveyed the battlefield, which was now littered with the fading remnants of fallen monsters.
His summons had proven strong enough to take down level 5 creatures, their teamwork and relentless attacks overwhelming even the most formidable foes.
"Time to see what I got from leveling up," he murmured.
As said before, reaching level 3 was a milestone for any awakener.
It was the point where they would unlock a new skill.
Karl was no different.
Ding!
[You have awakened a new skill – Spectral Blade (E)]
"Oh?" Karl immediately checked the description.
[Spectral Blade (E-Rank)]
[Proficiency – 0%]
[Effect: Consume five spirits from the [Spirit Cemetery] to summon the Spectral Blade. The blade lasts for 10 strikes, each dealing massive physical damage and unleashing a wave of spectral energy to harm nearby enemies.]
"Hm..."
Karl as a [Spirit Summoner] didn't need mana to use skills, instead, it was spirits.
In addition to that information, he also noticed that the description said [Spirit Cemetery] and not [Summon Cemetery].
This meant that he would need actual spirits from orbs, not his summons.
He even tried it out, just in case he was wrong.
"Spectral Blade," he muttered, "I want to use the [Wild Boar], [Demonized Fox], [Green Snake], [Giant Nature Fox] and [Nature Bear]."
Beep!
[These are summons. You need spirits.]
"As I thought."
There would probably be skills that required summons later, but right now, spirits were basically his currency for skills.
Wanting to test out the skill quickly to see how it worked in person, Karl ordered his summons to find nearby monsters and kill them.
The [Frenzied Rabbit] stayed by his side, while the others dispersed into the dense forest.
Before long, kill notifications began to roll in:
[Your Nature Bear has slain a level 5 Venom Snake.]
[Your Giant Nature Fox has slain a level 4 Demonized Squirrel.]
[Your Demonized Fox has slain a level 4 Earth Rabbit.]
Karl smirked as he read the messages, satisfied with his summons' efficiency.
However, just as he was about to collect the spirit orbs left behind, a sharp notification interrupted him.
[Your Wild Boar has been killed.]
"Huh?"
[Summon Cemetery: 7/15]
But before Karl could process the loss, the number dropped.
[Summon Cemetery: 6/15]
A sinking realization hit him: if one of his summons was killed, it meant permanent death.
He had expected that, but maybe deep down he had hoped that it would only result in them disappearing back to the [Summon Cemetery] and re-appear after a while.
Still, the more pressing concern was how the Wild Boar had died.
Plus, with the distance limit, didn't that mean that it happened within 100 meters from him?
Whatever had killed it was either a powerful monster or another awakener.
He moved quickly, collecting the [Spirit Orbs] left behind by his summons' kills.
Orbs had to be gathered manually, no long-distance collection was possible yet.
[Spirit Cemetery: 13/15]
By the time he finished, all the surviving summons had regrouped.
They looked at him expectantly, their silent demeanor reflecting confusion.

Even without speaking, their expressions seemed to ask, 'Where is the Wild Boar?'
"Wild Boar's dead," Karl said bluntly, exhaling a heavy sigh. "It's fine. Let's move on."
The spirits nodded in unison, their collective resolve unaffected.
Now that he had gathered enough spirits, it was time to test his new skill.
This was the first ability he had unlocked as a [Spirit Summoner], and judging by its description, it promised devastating power.
Karl took a deep breath and glanced at his spirits. "Let's see what this Spectral Blade can do."
