Chapter 69: Annual Sport III

Chapter 69

As the final event for the day was announced by the whistle blow, the children began their march past, each child representing their various house colours from their headbands to the matching flags.

Each house proudly displayed their unique march plus their house queens and kings as they stomped in rhythm, all in sync yet waving with happy smiles on their faces. Teachers overseeing the activities of each house trailed behind them, voices hoarse from shouting and guiding the children.

The crowd clapped as each house displayed their uniqueness, some parents cheering while some were pulling flags of their children’s house. Katherine stood under the tent, her eyes never leaving Jasmine and Hanith who paraded with their house — yellow and blue. Jasmine, of course, being energetic, was among the marching soldiers while Hanith sat on the small carriage as the prince.

So adorable. Katherine had a happy smile that latched onto her face as warmth spread through her body. Her babies looked happy. Even with Hanith’s shyness and quietness, he was enjoying himself under the parasol.

Jasmine and Hanith’s faces were flushed from the sun and a little tan from their running activities in the scorching sun, hair tousled and clothes a bit stained from the races.

When the parade ended, the last activity kicked off immediately—a tug of war—because the sun was already moving to the west, the orange hue making the sky beautiful.

The homeroom teachers of each class were called out for the activity as they shouted with all their might, pulling ropes to each side. The female homeroom teachers and the male homeroom teachers, each team screaming, grunting as the thick rope jerked back and forth like a slime.

Katherine also laughed too hard when one of the male teachers landed flat on his butt and others stepped on him, uncaring of the team member. Laughter enveloped the field when one of the male teachers was pulled over the rope.

They announced the gift for the winners.

"I’m coming," Aaron said, shooting Katherine a smile, and disappeared briefly. Within some minutes, gasps, murmurs, and a few squeals caught her attention, and she whipped her head back to check what was going on.

"SURPRISE!" Aaron yelled in a loud, dramatic voice, revealing a big truck.

Katherine blinked as her head turned toward the sound. Aaron was standing a few meters away from the main field entrance, his arms spread wide like he was about to hug the entire crowd. Behind him, a large truck rolled in, decorated in pastel-colored balloons and ribbons. On the side was a wide banner in glittery bold letters: FREE CANDY – FROM JASMINE AND HANITH’S DAD.

Children shrieked in excitement, abandoning whatever they were doing as they dashed toward the truck. Some parents were shocked, some clapped, and some just laughed in disbelief and ridiculousness.

Katherine’s mouth dropped open, her eyes wide with a twinkle of amusement and mild shock. "Aaron!" she half-yelled, walking toward him hurriedly.

Aaron turned to her with a shrug, completely unbothered. "What? It’s festive." He grinned, watching the kids line up beside the truck with excitement glowing on their faces. "You can’t tell me candy doesn’t make everything better."

Katherine covered her face with one hand and sighed, though a small smile tugged at her lips. "You’re unbelievable." Shaking her head. "But when did you plan this?" she asked, gesturing her hands to the truck.

"Oh, this?" Aaron grinned, rubbing the back of his neck. "Some hours ago."

Before Katherine could say anything, Jasmine came running up to him, her pigtails bouncing, her cheeks already stained with traces of the first batch of candy. "Daddy!" she squealed, her arms wide.

"Come here, kiddo," Aaron said, lifting her into the air and spinning her once before cradling her on his hip. Hanith joined shortly after, gripping Aaron’s shirt with his small fingers, looking up with happiness in his eyes.

Katherine stood a few steps back, watching them—Aaron in the center of it all, kids bubbling beside him, their laughter ringing with happiness and excitement.

Jasmine puffed her cheeks with pride, pointing to Aaron, who was in the middle, circled by children. She raised her head high, "That’s MY daddy! Our daddy brought this!"

She was showing off, Katherine thought, her eyes softening as she saw other kids staring at Jasmine in a new light.

A few minutes later, Mathew arrived on the field. He walked briskly towards the truck, his shirt slightly crumpled, and his expression was a mix of apology and remorse.

"Sorry I’m late," he said, slowing as he approached the Knight family, his eyes moving from the crowd to where Aaron stood, handling children’s candies like Father Christmas.

Katherine’s eyes widened a little seeing Mathew—he even took time out to come cheer for her kids. "Thank you for coming," she said truthfully.

"I didn’t think Father would delay me like that," Mathew muttered.

"I understand," Katherine responded, understanding Mathew’s situation with his father.

Mathew exhaled a laugh, shaking his head. "He just kept talking and talking." Then he paused when someone else stepped into view behind him.

"Good evening, Ms. Prescott," came a gentle voice.

Katherine tilted her head, her brows lifted as she caught sight of Amelia. The girl wore a simple floral knee-length dress and held a small gift bag in her hands. Her cheeks tinted as she stood beside Mathew.

"Ohh..." Katherine’s eyes widened slightly, her lips curving playfully. "Woah, I wasn’t expecting this—" she teased, wiggling her brows as she bit her lower lip, her gaze darting between them.

Mathew groaned, already knowing Katherine was thinking out of the box. "Kathy—no."

Katherine crossed her arms, leaning slightly with a mischievous grin. "Brought her along, did you?" then whispered so that only the two of them could hear, "I didn’t know both of you had reached that stage."

"I saw her on the way," Mathew said, already resigned to the teasing. "She was heading to the neighborhood, and I asked her to join."

"Oh, just casually invited her, huh?" Katherine’s tone was light, eyes twinkling.

"Yes, Kathy," he responded. "Don’t do this," Mathew said.

"I ain’t doing anything," Katherine grinned, yet the mischievousness in her eyes.

Mathew shook his head, but even he smiled. "You’re impossible."

"Uncle Mathew!" Jasmine called out, breaking the moment. She rushed to him, her hands and mouth sticky with pink fluff.

Mathew crouched down, scooping her up with ease. "My favorite human," he said as Jasmine laughed loudly, candy stuck in her hair. He handed her the little package he brought along and gave Hanith a head rub. "Look at you two—little champions."

"We won!" Jasmine beamed, showing him the tiny medal she got from the sack race. "I ran faster than everybody!"

"I’m so proud," Mathew said, then stretched his palm out. "That’s my girl." He high-fived her, grinning genuinely.

The interaction was warm, filled with easy familiarity, and Aaron, who was among the children, watched with a clenched jaw as he left for the truck workers to do the rest.

His Katherine is getting scooped in by that blondie.

Mathew, without missing a beat, saw Aaron who was glaring at him and coming closer. Mathew had a provoking smirk on his face. "You always overdo things, ehn," he said, nodding toward the still-growing line at the candy truck.

Aaron tilted his head lazily, eyes narrowed in mock challenge. "For them?" He pointed to Jasmine and Hanith, who were now gleefully licking candy. "Always." He returned the smirk.

Katherine walked up beside Aaron, nudging his side with her elbow. "You’re ridiculous," she muttered, still smiling. "Absolutely ridiculous."

He didn’t respond. Instead, he threaded his fingers through hers, his touch gentle yet grounding. Then, without a word, he leaned over and kissed the top of her head, his lips lingering. When he pulled back, his eyes flickered over to Mathew’s displeased expression and shot Mathew a triumphant smirk.

Mathew’s face twitched slightly, his hands curled to his side as he swallowed the words at the tip of his tongue.

The event began winding down with the sun rolling back to its horizon. Children slumped on their parents’ laps, faces and hands coated with stains as teachers started cleaning up, voices hoarse, eyes and bodies screaming exhaustion and for rest.

Aaron carried both Jasmine and Hanith to the back seat where the two kids slumped, heads met together, their breath steady in a rhythm, knocked out from tiredness.

Katherine moved to the shotgun as Aaron went to the driver’s seat.

The car ride was quiet except for the soft hum of the engine and occasional sounds from the city outside. Katherine shifted a little, turning her body to face Aaron slightly. She grabbed his free hand while the other was on the steering wheel.

"Thank you for today," she whispered, her voice low and soft, a yawn escaping her mouth.

Aaron glanced over at her and grinned widely, bringing their joined hands to his lips and placing a gentle kiss on the back of her hand.

"There’s no need for thank you between us, babe," he said quietly. "I only did what’s expected of me."

Katherine blinked slowly, the corner of her lips lifting as her gaze dropped to their hands, her thumb subconsciously brushing his knuckle, heart fluttering quietly in her chest.
