Chapter 27: Episode 27: The Wolf Pack are Near.

The Dragon King’s cave was quiet, save for the soft breathing from the crib.

Roxy stood by the bed, folding a stack of tiny onesies. She moved mechanically, her mind miles away without a single smile on her face. Specifically, her mind was two days in the future, imagining the clash of armies that the System had warned her about.

I shouldn’t have fucking read that book.

She cursed internally, feeling regret. Because she knew that if she had been working on her damn report, she wouldn’t be standing here folding baby clothes for a baby she would soon abandon to have another baby.

But I can’t take Drax along, or a full war might break out, and instead of saving the world, I would be destroying it.

I would be going against the system, which meant immediate death. Death, I haven’t confirmed if I would be erased or return to earth.

"What are you doing?" Zarek’s voice rumbled from the entrance.

Roxy jumped, dropping a onesie. She turned to find Zarek leaning against the stone wall. He looked exhausted but happy, so much so that his face was radiant. More handsome. He had soot on his cheek and drool on his shoulder.

Proof of how much he was settling into his duty as a dad.

"I’m organizing some stuff," Roxy corrected, picking up the cloth.

Zarek pushed off the wall and walked over to her. He wrapped his massive arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. He inhaled her scent deeply, the sound jagged and desperate, which made Roxy shiver.

Heat pooling down her belly.

"You smell of anxiety and milk," Zarek murmured, and Roxy rolled her eyes.

I was a nervous wreck because my mind was unwinding what I could do to avoid this.

[There is no escaping this.]

Shut up, you fucking robot.

She sighed heavily, biting the urge to cry, because she had promised herself she wouldn’t be doing that again. She had broken it once during labor; she wouldn’t want to try a second time.

"It’s called motherhood, Z," Roxy said, leaning back into him for a fleeting moment of comfort. "It’s 90% panic and 10% laundry."

Zarek chuckled, not believing her, the vibration humming against her back. "Drax is sleeping, and the clan is feasting because they are healthy. The cave no longer looks like a cave. There is no need to panic. You have gotten all the comfort you needed."

Roxy closed her eyes, her heart aching.

If only you fucking knew, Z. I wish I could tell you everything.

Suddenly, a sound came from the crib.

Drax, who had been sleeping peacefully, kicked off his small tiger-skin baby blanket. His tiny golden eyes snapped open. He let out a tiny roar as if he was motivated in his sleep, and started wailing.

"Oh my," Roxy whispered, immediately dropping everything and rushing to the crib. Baby Drax immediately shut up seeing his mother, and extended his tiny hands out for her.

Roxy softened immediately and leaned in to pick up the child.

That’s when she noticed Zarek standing there, stiff. She rocked Drax in her arms as the little child nuzzled into her embrace.

"Zarek? Roxy called. "Is everything okay?"

You look like you have seen a ghost.

"The scent of life must have traveled with the wind. "Zarek hissed, raking his hair with his hand. He sounded frustrated. He spun around and faced Roxy with clear determination. "I will protect you and Drax, Roxy. Even if they all come for me, I will burn this continent down to the ground to make sure only you and I, plus our little hatchling, remain."

That should have made me cringe so hard, so why is my heart beating?

[TheMotheroftheWorld claims that you are falling in love.]

Can I even afford to fall in love? Am I even allowed to do anything I want to right now?

[The Dragon King’s Affection for you has increased to 80%]

Roxy scoffed. Her heart was aching so much, but she could only take one painful step forward until she was standing so close to Zarek.

She raised her free hand and snaked it to the back of his head. With a push, she pressed his forehead against hers and whispered, "Thank you, Z."

For not eating me when I took advantage of you, for taking care of me, for treating me like I was something you can’t afford to leave, for protecting me.

A tear slid down her face, and she claimed his lips in a soft, deep kiss. Roxy already taught Zarek how to kiss, so he caught on soon enough. Just when he wanted to take a step further, Roxy tugged his head back.

"Remember, I am standing here with baby Drax, you fricking big lizard." Roxy chuckled as she watched Zarek’s eyes soften.

His large hand cupped her cheeks as he wiped the tears that slid down her face. She leaned into his touch. She wanted to say more, but she couldn’t. She could just watch them, but a fire burned in her heart.

A fire of determination that she was definitely going to reunite this world.

That would be her purpose.

****

Later, when the sun was setting, Roxy shivered.

She was sitting on the bed, nursing a cup of warm tea, when a chill had settled deep in her bones.

Something bad was coming.

What was that?

[Alert: Territory Breach Imminent.]

[The Wolf King has mobilized his pack.]

[Current Status of Wolf Army: Desperation]

They are going to kill themselves!

Roxy gritted her teeth in anger. How can a wolf fight a dragon? Just by breathing fire from its lungs, it could wipe out a whole pack, yet they were diving headfirst because of her.

Why the fuck am I being dragged into the middle of this? What’s next?

Would the tigers assemble to?

[TheStoryWeaver shrugs, saying that you were chosen to save the beast world, of course, every dominant predator would be out to get you.]

I won’t be recommending this experience to anyone.

Zarek walked into the cave, his face twisted into a frown. He must have felt it too. The predator in him knew another predator was coming.

"They are coming," Zarek spat out in a scowl. "I have already assembled the other dragons. I will make sure their skin, flesh, and blood are put to good use today."

Roxy shivered in fear.

"How long?" Roxy asked, setting her tea down. Her hands were shaking.

Because she knew that she wasn’t fucking built for all this shit, she was just a woman who wanted to avoid dramas anymore, yet she had to go through this goddamn survival simulation.

Zarek turned to her. "Tonight."

Roxy sucked in a sharp breath.

I have to fucking leave my child and husband tonight?!

Fuck! No! Fucking no, I am not doing this.

Roxy’s head throbbed; that’s when she saw the system pop up again.

[Penalty: Dragon Clan wiped out.]

How is that fucking possible?!
