Back to 1984: Let's Work Hard Together to Raise The Kids!-Chapter 220: Slap in the Face
The look in her eyes seemed to say, "See! You didn’t come to please me, so it’s your own fault you lost the chance to make money!"
Tang Jing and Zhou Miaqing naturally knew Ji Fang did it on purpose, but neither of them cared.
Xu Jiahui had her back to them, so she didn’t see it. Curiously, she asked, "By the way, why did you guys leave so quickly last semester? I moved in on the first day of vacation, but didn’t see a trace of anyone."
Zhou Miaqing laughed, "Because we went to do part-time jobs! Making money is something you have to seize every minute for, there’s no time to waste!"
"Huh? Making money? What kind of part-time jobs were you doing?" Xu Jiahui was really curious.
Ji Fang and Su Wanwan also glanced over, pricking up their ears to listen.
But Zhou Miaqing started joking around, "Actually, it’s not a big deal. Jingjing wanted a part-time job, so Xinyue asked her brother for help. It just so happened that Xinyue has a really capable brother. She contacted him, and he sent us a batch of goods, which we went to sell at a stall."
"Huh? You’re still students, is that okay?" Xu Jiahui didn’t expect her two roommates to be so bold.
Tang Jing smiled shyly and said, "At first, I didn’t think it was possible, not realistic, but Xinyue said selling at a stall was quick money and could quickly solve my predicament. Plus, she had two brothers with us. We thought with two guys along, it shouldn’t be dangerous, so we agreed.
Everything was arranged by Xinyue’s brother, and we just went to sell. The first day we didn’t have startup capital, and no one said anything."
Zhou Miaqing nodded vigorously, "We made over a hundred bucks in just a day, and we sold until New Year’s Eve. Jingjing earned a lot, not only not needing to ask her family for money but even sent some back home, isn’t that impressive!"
Xu Jiahui immediately gave a thumbs up, full of envy, "Next time there’s such a good opportunity, take me with you, I’m not afraid of hard work, just don’t have the connections."
The two laughed happily, "Tell Xinyue when she’s back; her family is super amazing, a real rich family. You wouldn’t know, they have a car worth hundreds of thousands!"
"How do you know that?" Xu Jiahui became even more curious.
Zhou Miaqing was quite smug, "Because Jingjing came home with me for the New Year! We went to visit Xinyue together. Even my parents went along, and Xinyue’s parents were really nice. They live in a villa, have a car and a boat. Her dad even took us out to sea on the boat. Do you think a regular family has those conditions?"
Xu Jiahui shook her head repeatedly.
Ji Fang and Su Wanwan couldn’t listen any longer.
They left angrily, not even finishing their meals, too upset to eat.
Outside the cafeteria, Ji Fang scrutinized Su Wanwan, "You seem to have known Chen Xinyue for a long time. Do you know about her family’s situation?"
Su Wanwan quickly shook her head, "We’re just from the same place. We met on the train back then. I knew her family was wealthy, but exactly how wealthy I’m not sure."
Ji Fang stomped her foot in frustration, feeling both envious of Chen Xinyue’s family background and regretful for impulsively missing out on such a wealthy friend.
Now, with the dorms switched, one of them was upstairs, the other downstairs, and they weren’t even in the same major, so their paths were unlikely to cross in the future.
The more she thought about it, the more unwilling she felt, and she directly gave Su Wanwan the cold shoulder.
Su Wanwan was also unhappy; she had sucked up to Ji Fang because Ji Fang was a local from the capital, with resources and connections. She never imagined Chen Xinyue’s background was so powerful, much stronger than Ji Fang’s family.
Previously, to curry favor with Ji Fang, she had distanced herself from Chen Xinyue and even suggested Ji Fang and Xu Jiahui switch dorms, giving Xu Jiahui the opportunity to get close to Chen Xinyue for nothing.
The more she thought about it, the more annoyed she became.
Zhou Miaqing and Tang Jing exchanged smiles after seeing Ji Fang storm off in anger.
Chen Xinyue didn’t return to the dorm until the night of the Lantern Festival, and when she saw Xu Jiahui, she was quite surprised. After hearing the story behind it, she also expressed her welcome.
She even specifically called her family to mention that Xu Jiahui had become her roommate.
Lin Qin was aware of Chen Xinyue’s situation at school and was relieved to know her daughter had a different roommate.
There was always something to do during school.
With a harmonious dorm life, everyone was happy, and their study efficiency improved significantly.
In March, Tang Jing received a letter from home, written by her younger brother. It was mainly to ask about her life at school on behalf of her parents and to tell her to call the village committee.
Tang Jing immediately went to the canteen’s small shop to make a call.
The first call was to ask the village committee to contact her family, and half an hour later, she called again.
The call quickly connected, and Tang Jing’s mother was particularly excited, "Little Wu, how are you doing over there at school? Is your study going smoothly?"
Tang Jing felt a lump in her throat, her eyes reddening, "Mom, I’m doing well, no need to worry about me. Did you receive the money I sent before?"
"Yes, yes, we got it. You kid, still in school, went to sell at a stall to make money and didn’t keep it as living expenses. Your dad and I grow crops, raise pigs, chickens, and ducks at home. We’re not short of food or drink, no need to rush to send money!" Tang Jing’s mother’s voice was choked with tears.
This time, Tang Jing sent back a thousand yuan. Her parents were surprised and worried, mainly because her elder brother had been out for years and hadn’t sent much money home, with the most being three hundred at a time. They never imagined that their daughter, who had just started college, would send money home.
And such a large amount, but fortunately, there was also a handwritten letter from Tang Jing, carefully explaining where the money came from, which reassured them a bit.
They didn’t dare to use the money and carefully set it aside, intending to save it for Tang Jing and their younger son to use for schooling in the future.
Tang Jing broke into a smile, "Mom, I have some living expenses saved. Also, the summer vacation is long, and I’ve agreed with my roommates to make money again. I’ll try to save up for myself so you and Dad don’t have to worry about me. If I can, I’d like to support my brother going to college too. Tell him to make an effort and focus on his studies; don’t worry about the money."
She was eager to send money home to reassure her brother. Her brother, Tang Yu, was different from the other two brothers—kind, sensible, particularly filial, and smart. Out of so many siblings, only the two of them were good at studying, and they had been close since childhood, sharing a bond that couldn’t be matched by their other siblings.
Her brother had the potential to be a good student, but her parents could only afford to send one child to college, and she didn’t want her brother to drop out because of money.
Tang Jing’s mother covered her mouth to keep herself from crying out loud, "Okay... your dad and I are not capable, can’t help you much, take good care of yourself." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"I know! You and Dad should take care of yourselves too, and remember to tell my brother that there are only three months left until the college entrance exam. He must try hard, I’m waiting for his good news." Tang Jing said before hanging up the phone.
Her mother wiped away her tears as she walked back home.
