Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 78: That Little Bastard Is Catching Up
After much deliberation, Dong Qihua decided to eat at home. If he didn’t, his mom would ask why, and he’d have to find another excuse.
A single lie is easy to tell, but it takes countless others to cover it up.
And once that lie is exposed, the liar loses all credibility.
Adhering to such a simple principle required a surprising amount of courage and persistence.
He couldn’t keep it up, which was why Dong Qihua would rather stay home for dinner than lie to his mother.
No one would keep tabs on him after dinner. That way, he wouldn’t cause any unnecessary trouble for his friend.
Dong Qihua didn’t have any other hobbies. At twenty-three, he still hadn’t considered getting married.
His one and only hobby was sampling all kinds of delicacies. He believed that eating good food was the most blissful thing in the world.
Savoring the taste sensations from different foods brought him a deep, genuine joy.
Thus, Dong Qihua had recently become obsessed with Su’s mother’s cooking. He and his dad would sneak over at noon to scrounge a meal.
Of course, they would also bring gifts of equal value to cover the cost of the food. After all, nobody’s money grew on trees.
The father-son duo didn’t dare go over for dinner, though. His dad had warned that if his mother, his second aunt, and his female cousins found out about the good food at the Su family’s house...
...there would be huge trouble. His second aunt, in particular, loved taking advantage of small things and was incredibly narrow-minded.
If his second aunt were to find out his relatives at the Su family home were eating meat every day.
Then his second aunt would definitely go over to leech off of them. When that happened, his friend would surely tear him to pieces.
People are often like that. The closer you are to someone, the more you resent it when they’re doing better than you.
’It’s fine if you’re doing well, but you can’t be doing better than me. If you’re worse off than I am, then I might spare a little something to help you out.’
’But if you’re doing better than me, those with some decency will just be secretly jealous and resentful. The shameless ones will go straight to leeching off you.’
His second aunt was even more of a character. If someone was doing well, she would absolutely go try to leech off them.
If someone was doing poorly, not only would she refuse to help in the slightest, she would even go and kick them while they were down.
The only people in the world his second aunt didn’t dare to mess with were rich strangers.
When she encountered rich strangers, his second aunt would just worship and fawn over them, never daring to ask for anything.
But when it came to rich relatives, she would go leech off them, wishing she could rake all their wealth into her own pockets.
If any relative didn’t let her bask in their glory, she would declare them to be an unforgivably evil person.
Dong Qihua still remembered from his childhood that when his paternal aunt’s family had been wealthy, his second aunt had been so incredibly chummy with them.
Later, when his paternal aunt’s family fell on hard times, his second aunt immediately turned her back on them, pretending she didn’t know them.
Take this time, for instance. His step-grandmother had sent his paternal aunt’s family to the Su family, and his second aunt had never once asked after them.
*Sigh!* ’I wonder if my friend and Jiaojiao are back yet.’ Dong Qihua chewed his food, unable to taste a thing.
The very Gu Jiaojiao Dong Qihua was thinking about was at that moment driving her car, having already entered Qing City.
There were very few pedestrians or cars on the road, so Gu Jiaojiao was driving fast, not even slowing down upon entering the city.
In those days, cars had no music, only the radio, and Gu Jiaojiao didn’t like listening to it.
At Mr. Gu’s request, no one in the car was talking, and Gu Jiaojiao was very unaccustomed to driving in this atmosphere.
So she drove at a breakneck pace. Up ahead, a military jeep was hogging the middle of the road. It was moving a bit slowly—at least, that’s what Gu Jiaojiao thought.
In reality, the jeep was going much faster than a typical car. Inside sat Sheng Shijing and a few of his comrades-in-arms.
The one driving was Sheng Shijing’s childhood friend, Zhang Weishan. "Shi Jing, take a look. Isn’t that the Song family’s car behind us?"
"HONK... HONK..."
Gu Jiaojiao honked a few times.
The jeep ahead slowed down even more, as if the driver had hit the brakes, but it didn’t stop or pull over to let her pass.
"It really is the Song family’s car. Driving that fast, are they in a hurry to get themselves killed?" another young man cursed.
When Gu Jiaojiao saw the car ahead wasn’t yielding or accelerating, her mood instantly soured.
Not wanting to waste any more time with them, she stomped on the gas and shot past.
The car body lurched sharply to the left, its nose almost hitting the other vehicle’s tail—but it missed by a hair’s breadth, just as she’d intentionally controlled it.
She quickly spun the steering wheel to correct her course, and the car continued smoothly onward.
"Jiaojiao, that was so dangerous! You were just an inch away from hitting that car."
Mr. Gu said with concern. A moment ago, he’d been so frightened his heart had nearly leaped out of his throat.
"Dad, just relax and hold on tight. Jiaojiao knows what she’s doing. She was just intentionally scaring them for not yielding the road."
"That’s right! Shu Ci gets me. Dad, don’t worry. Hold on tight... those little bastards are catching up, hehe~"
"HONK HONK HONK... HONK... HONK HONK HONK..."
The car behind caught up, horn blaring. A hothead was leaning out of the passenger-side window, yelling at them.
"Whoa! It’s a chick driving! You got a death wish, lady?"
Song Zijie, having taken the medicine Gu Jiaojiao gave him, was in high spirits. "You call yourselves men and you can’t even catch my sister-in-law? What’re you still yapping about?"
"Well, well, the Song family kid is feeling cocky today. Who’s this ’sister-in-law’ of yours? Besides, aren’t you the eldest son in the Song family? Where’d a sister-in-law come from?"
Zhang Weishan asked, still driving.
"Keep it up, Zhang Weishan! My sister-in-law will leave you in the dust in minutes! I have a new sworn big brother, Su Shuochi, so my sister-in-law is, naturally, his new wife."
Sheng Shijing, who had been sitting in the back row in a bad mood with his eyes closed to rest, heard the words "Su Shuochi’s wife."
He shot upright with a jolt, craning his neck to see if the driver was his adoptive sister.
SCREECH—
Without giving them a second look, Gu Jiaojiao slammed the accelerator to the floor, leaving them far behind in her dust.
The jeep behind gave chase, trying to force Gu Jiaojiao’s car to slow down or stop.
"Zhang Weishan, stop. Let me drive." Sheng Shijing had seen her clearly. The driver was his adoptive sister, Gu Jiaojiao.
She had possessed one of the world’s most beautiful faces since she was a child, with her high-bridged nose, small cherry-like lips, and willow-leaf eyebrows.
Sheng Shijing would never mistake her, not even in profile. But that triumphant glance she’d just thrown back...
...her eyes had sparkled like obsidian, possessing a depth and charm he had never seen in them before.
That elegant aura, and especially that self-confidence—it was all completely new to him.
’Does marriage really change a person this much?’
"Sheng Shijing, hurry and catch up to that chick! I’m gonna give her a serious tongue-lashing!"
"Is that the best you can do? If you’re so capable, why didn’t you just catch up and chew her out yourself?" Sheng Shijing’s mood worsened.
"Boss, if I could have caught up to that chick, I wouldn’t have been yelling from inside the car."
Though he wouldn’t say it out loud, Zhang Weishan had to admit that he was outmatched.
Sheng Shijing said no more. He slid into the driver’s seat, having no time to wonder why Jiaojiao had changed so completely.
"Haha, those little bastards stopped to switch drivers! Everybody hold on tight! I don’t care who’s driving, I’m losing them."
Gu Jiaojiao laughed triumphantly, even turning back to playfully stick her tongue out at Su Shuochi.
The sight left Su Shuochi’s mouth dry. "Jiao... Jiaojiao... your older brother is driving that car now."
