Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Omnipotent

Although Su’s mother didn’t know where the Southern Border was, she knew going on missions was tough.

Every time her son went on a mission, she was so worried she couldn’t sleep. She was also incredibly grateful to Sheng Shijing for taking care of her daughter for the past eighteen years.

So she eagerly served Sheng Shijing food, and Mrs. Gu was even more grateful for the care and affection Sheng Shijing had shown her daughter.

The two mothers looked like they wanted to pile every single dish from the table into Sheng Shijing’s bowl.

Sheng Shijing was still in a daze, stunned by Su Shuochi and Gu Jiaojiao’s lavish meal. He still hadn’t quite recovered.

Now, the two aunts were eagerly pressing more food on him, with Su’s mother even carefully deboning a fish for him.

He passively lowered his head and ate, his heart churning with emotion as he fought back the tears welling in his eyes.

He really hadn’t expected life in the Su family to be so bountiful. From what everyone was saying, these dishes were just their everyday meals.

The stir-fried snails, however, were something they were eating for the first time. Apparently, Jiaojiao and her husband had bought them in Feng’en County the day before.

"Jiaojiao, how was school today? Did any of your classmates bully you?"

Dong Qihua’s boisterous voice sounded from the doorway. He and his father always came over to scrounge a meal at lunchtime.

"Brother, Qi Hua, you’re here! Quick, sit down and have some stir-fried snails. Jiaojiao made them, and they’re delicious."

Seeing her brother and nephew, Mrs. Gu immediately invited them to sit, showing she already felt a sense of belonging.

"Jiaojiao, how are you supposed to eat these snails when they’re still in the shell?" Dong Qihua asked excitedly, seeing a new dish.

"You bumpkin. These are called stir-fried snails. Even if you’ve never eaten them, you must have heard of them, right? You just suck the meat out with your mouth."

Uncle Dong chuckled as he teased his son. In truth, he had only heard about them from a fellow soldier; the state-run restaurants in Qing City really didn’t serve this dish.

"Dad, why don’t you teach me how to eat it, then," Dong Qihua said with a grin.

When it came to putting his father on the spot, Dong Qihua was second to none.

"Second Brother Gu, you teach him how to eat it." ’How was I supposed to teach him when I’ve never eaten it myself?’ Uncle Dong thought.

"Jiaojiao, did any classmates bully you today?" Second Brother Gu asked worriedly after teaching his older cousin.

In his mind, his little sister could do anything, so he never dreamed that a classmate would bully Jiaojiao.

"Hah! Don’t you worry. We should be glad Jiaojiao isn’t the one bullying others."

Sheng Shijing had been so moved he was on the verge of tears. With the arrival of the Dong father and son, he felt a little better, but his voice was still a bit hoarse.

His memory drifted back to a few years ago, before he’d left the military compound to join the army.

Back then, schoolteachers were constantly coming to them to complain that Jiaojiao had bullied so-and-so, and so-and-so, and so-and-so.

"Jiaojiao, you used to bully your classmates? Looking at you, I just can’t see you as someone who would bully others."

"Hehe~ That’s impossible. The teachers were just using it as an excuse to suck up to Mr. Sheng and my big brother."

Gu Jiaojiao touched her nose and spouted nonsense with a straight face. The original owner of her body had, in fact, been a bit of a bully growing up, throwing her weight around.

Although they were just minor, harmless incidents, everyone later found out she wasn’t the Sheng Family’s daughter.

They all kicked her while she was down, eager to stomp on her. In reality, they were all just jealous of how good the original owner’s life had been.

Hearing Gu Jiaojiao’s explanation, the Su and Gu families started piling even more food into Sheng Shijing’s bowl.

If it weren’t for this doting big brother, Jiaojiao would never have been able to live so freely.

Sheng Shijing had a hearty appetite, but even he had to say, "Please, don’t give me any more. I’ve already eaten four bowls of rice."

Hearing this, Su’s mother redirected the chopsticks of food toward Dong Qihua instead.

Mrs. Gu also placed a helping of food into her brother’s bowl. "You work hard, so eat more."

Uncle Dong chuckled happily. His sister often served him food like this.

After finishing the meal, the two mothers went to wash some fruit. "Jiaojiao’s big brother, have an apple to cleanse your palate."

"Here, Jiaojiao’s big brother, have a peach to cleanse your palate." Mrs. Gu also washed a peach and pressed it into Sheng Shijing’s hand.

Sheng Shijing had just put down his bowl, and now he stood there dumbfounded, a peach in his left hand and an apple in his right.

This made Gu Jiaojiao roar with laughter. She was full too, and someone had also pressed a peach into her hand.

Everyone else only got a peach, no apple; the Su family wasn’t yet so wealthy that they could afford to eat two kinds of fruit at one meal.

Although all the fruit came from Gu Jiaojiao’s storage space, Su Shuochi was very particular about these details, usually only giving everyone half an apple each.

"Jiaojiao, stop laughing. Let me rub your stomach for you," Su Shuochi said with concern.

"Hehe, Jiaojiao, don’t laugh at us. We’re just doing this because Eldest Brother Sheng is about to leave."

Su’s mother and Mrs. Gu said sheepishly, then lowered their heads to take a bite of their peaches.

"Mom~ Couldn’t you have just washed the fruit, put it in a mesh bag, and given it to Big Brother to eat on the road?~"

"We washed a whole mesh bag of peaches and a few apples. The bag was already full."

"And my big brother’s stomach is full too!~ Haha... I can’t... my stomach hurts from laughing."

"Jiaojiao, stop laughing. Your big brother can still finish them," Sheng Shijing said with a gentle smile.

When he smiled, a dimple appeared on his cheek, and his starry eyes curved into crescents. He was devastatingly handsome.

His own family once had this kind of warm atmosphere, but it vanished after his biological sister came home.

’So, there’s no joy wherever Yueyue is,’ Sheng Shijing thought. Just this morning, breakfast had been so aggravating it felt like a heart attack.

Gu Jiaojiao looked at the large travel bag, a mesh bag of fruit for the car ride, and another mesh bag with stir-fried snails and braised meat.

"If my big brother had two more hands, I wonder if the moms would pack another two bags for him. You know, Shu Ci and I can see him to his car."

Gu Jiaojiao teased, her lively eyes blinking, her smile as beautiful as a blooming flower.

"Aiyo~ Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll go make some savory pancakes for Eldest Brother Sheng to eat on the road."

Second Brother Gu slapped his thigh and pretended to wail.

"Jiaojiao’s big brother, I’ll go make a pot of spicy sticks for you to eat on the road," Su’s mother added.

And so, because of Gu Jiaojiao’s one little joke, Sheng Shijing ended up with two more mesh bags of things.

"Qi Hua, go tell Zhang Weishan to drive the car over to our doorstep," Su Shuochi instructed his friend.

’Since Sheng Shijing doesn’t know what happened with Sheng Yueyue, it’s better not to distract him. If he found out, it would more or less affect his mood.’

Dong Qihua instantly understood his friend’s intention. His cousin wouldn’t stop chattering after coming home, and besides, the Sheng Family next door had been turned upside down by a huge fight.

As Dong Qihua came into the house, he was still thinking, ’How can Sheng Shijing still be smiling so happily?’

’Oh, so he doesn’t know yet. In that case, we shouldn’t let him find out,’ Dong Qihua thought, then rode his bicycle to tell Zhang Weishan to drive over and pick Sheng Shijing up directly.

Su’s mother had just finished making a pot of spicy sticks and was dishing them out when Zhang Weishan drove up.

Gu Jiaojiao looked at Sheng Shijing seriously and carefully reminded him, "Big Brother, you must take care of yourself.

Just do your duty to the country and its people. Don’t go chasing the spotlight just for fame and glory.

Fame and fortune aren’t that important. Having a clear conscience is enough. Taking care of yourself is the best way to repay Mom and Dad."

"Your big brother will definitely come back alive," Sheng Shijing said, his voice choked with emotion.

The tears he had been holding back for so long filled his eyes again. He recalled what Yueyue had said that morning: getting injured was nothing; a promotion would let her bask in his glory...
