Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 96: It Was Yuanyuan Who Was Thoughtless and Angered You
Dong Qiming pedaled his bicycle so fast it whirred, and Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t even hear what Su Shuochi was saying.
Su Shuochi saw how much his wife enjoyed riding the bicycle; she was laughing joyfully as she steered it herself.
’In a year at most, I’ll be able to stand again. Then I can ride my bike and take her to school every day.’
’Maybe I could even drive her to school in a car.’ The thought of a car made Su Shuochi think of his former comrade-in-arms, Lin Haoshi.
After his injury, Lin Haoshi had gone out of his way to find renowned doctors for him, but Su Shuochi had refused to see him.
’I’m bored now that my wife isn’t here. I might as well give Lin Haoshi a call.’
He and Lin Haoshi shared a bond forged in battle, the kind of friendship where you’d trust the other man with your life. Lin Haoshi was from the Imperial City, and his surname hadn’t originally been Lin.
Over a decade ago, his family had fallen on hard times. He and his sister had followed their mother when she remarried into the Lin Family, and she had changed both their surnames.
His sister, who was thirteen at the time, seemed quite pleased to take the surname Lin. She had looked at their biological father with disgust and said,
"The revolution is a great cause, and I refuse to let familial bonds hinder its progress. My father has ideological issues. You should handle this impartially, without any consideration for our new Lin Family’s reputation."
It made Lin Haoshi so angry he wanted to punch his sister, but he was only eleven. If he defied his mother, he would have to join his father on a pig farm.
But you can’t fight a losing battle. To survive, his only choice was to follow his mother into the Lin Family and take his stepfather’s surname.
As a result, Lin Haoshi developed a warped and difficult personality. In his entire life, Su Shuochi was the only friend he ever truly let in.
According to Lin Haoshi, his stepfather’s grandfather had been a long-term laborer for a wealthy family before the nation was founded.
During the final stages of the war, that family fled overseas, and his grandfather came into a bit of their fortune, which he used to start his own business.
The father of Lin Haoshi’s stepfather had never known hardship and grew up to be a good-for-nothing.
He was an artsy type, obsessed with raising cats all day—not unlike the idle, profligate sons of wealthy families in ancient times.
Mr. Lin had several sons and was so utterly disappointed in that one that he nearly threw the good-for-nothing out of the house.
But then he discovered his grandson had a gift for academics. Mr. Lin wept with joy, and suddenly, even his useless son seemed more tolerable.
From then on, Mr. Lin took his grandson under his wing to raise him personally. It was said the Lin Family held some sway in the Imperial City.
His stepfather was said to have a harsh fate, one that led to the deaths of several wives. Each wife had borne him a daughter before passing away.
He supposedly had five daughters in total. Eventually, Lin Haoshi’s future stepfather took a fancy to his mother after her divorce and married her, bringing her and her two children into his home.
When the patriarch of the Lin Family saw Lin Haoshi’s handsome features, he demanded the boy change his surname to Lin.
Su Shuochi didn’t even know what Lin Haoshi’s original surname was. He wasn’t one to pry, which was probably why Lin Haoshi felt comfortable telling him so many things.
Lin Haoshi had intended to achieve great things and, once he had the chance, go find his biological father.
But then Lin Haoshi was injured, leaving him no choice but to continue relying on the Lin Family.
He’d been injured a year before Su Shuochi, and not as severely.
The Lin Family had hired famous doctors to treat him, and in the end, he was left with only a slight weakness in his left foot. It gave him an awkward gait but didn’t affect his overall health.
A few months ago, Lin Haoshi had even found a leading medical expert from the Imperial City for Su Shuochi, but unfortunately, the diagnosis was the same: incurable.
Just as Su Shuochi was thinking about his friend, a cloyingly sweet voice called out, "Shuoci~ I haven’t seen you in so many days~~"
Su Shuochi had no desire to deal with the crazy woman. He swiftly maneuvered his wheelchair forward. ’This thing from my wife’s space is incredible.’
In the blink of an eye, Su Shuochi had covered a good distance, but he kept urging the wheelchair onward.
But Dong Yuanyuan hadn’t seen Su Shuochi in a long time. There was no way she was going to let such a good opportunity slip by.
She was on a ladies’ bicycle, a more delicate model than the standard heavy-framed bikes, and she pedaled furiously after Su Shuochi.
She couldn’t believe it—she was on a bicycle and still couldn’t catch up to Shuoci’s wheelchair. So, she yelled out,
"Shuoci~ Wait for me~ I truly love you! I’m the person who loves you most in this entire world~"
The person ahead actually stopped. Dong Yuanyuan was thrilled. ’I knew it! Shuo Ci does like me.’
’As soon as I say something like this, my Shuoci is bound to reconsider. But... I’ve already promised to marry He Aiguo.’
’If Shuoci asks me to marry him, should I agree?’
’I mean, I really do like him, but marry a cripple? I don’t want to do that!’
And so, Dong Yuanyuan’s pedaling slowed considerably. She didn’t know how she would face the deep affection her Shuoci was about to show her.
Su Shuochi had intended to wait for the woman to get closer before warning her off, but she was still dawdling after quite some time.
"Who are you? How shameless can you be, spouting nonsense like this in the middle of the road and damaging my reputation? If my wife gets the wrong idea because of you, I’ll cripple your entire family."
A vicious glint flared in Su Shuochi’s eyes, and his dark gaze bore into Dong Yuanyuan.
He was like a wolf lying in wait in the dark, radiating a grim, murderous aura that made Dong Yuanyuan shudder in fear.
"Get lost. The next time I catch you spouting nonsense, this little tree will be your fate."
With a hand chop, Su Shuochi snapped a tree by the roadside, one as thick as a rice bowl. A loud CRACK echoed, and Dong Yuanyuan was so terrified she wet herself.
A puddle instantly appeared on the asphalt road, and a yellow stain spread across the front of Dong Yuanyuan’s white dress.
The passersby were also scared stiff. They had been about to edge closer to listen in on the drama—gossip from the compound had been endless lately.
But from now on, they wouldn’t dare listen to, much less spread, any gossip about Su Canfei.
"SOB... Shuoci... you’re so cruel... As of today, any bond between us is severed!"
Dong Yuanyuan spat the words out through gritted teeth, her expression tragic and her eyes welling with tears. Saying it felt like a thousand needles piercing her heart.
But when she saw Su Shuochi’s completely unmoved expression, her pain morphed into fury.
To her even greater humiliation, Su Shuochi replied in a serious tone, "I don’t even know who you are. What ’bond between us’ could there be? Comrade, please stop slandering my name."
"What reputation does a cripple like you even need? And you think you can just stand there and slander an innocent maiden like me?"
Dong Yuanyuan was so furious she could have spat blood, and she lashed out without thinking.
"Everyone, come and be a witness," Su Shuochi’s rich, deep voice rang out as he looked at the passersby with sincerity. "I was minding my own business, traveling down this avenue, so who was it shouting nonsense from behind?"
"My wife says that a person should be dependable and never run away from their problems.
A dependable person takes initiative and accepts responsibility. They actively think of solutions and can withstand any trial.
An undependable person, on the other hand, is like an ostrich. When trouble arises, they just stick their head in the sand, pretend they can’t hear anything, and shove the responsibility onto someone else."
The passersby: ...
’We see nothing. We hear nothing. We *are* the ostriches. Please, just let us go.’
Dong Yuanyuan was so furious she could have fallen over backward. ’I never should have provoked this lunatic. He went crazy after he was crippled!’ 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
’If I don’t apologize today, this cripple definitely won’t let me off the hook.’
"Comrade Su Shuochi, I’m sorry. It was Yuanyuan who was being foolish and angered you. It won’t happen again."
