Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Memories And Fears

Before the rank 4 zombie could attack, a meteor fell from above forcing it to dodge. A man wearing heavy armour landed Infront of him.

He said nothing and attacked the zombie, their battle shook the land. His vessel was a huge hammer.

Everytime he used it, the ground shook and split apart. Burning rocks fell from the sky like rain.

The zombie used her ability to control light to block and attack. He looked at Naledi and both had grim faces.

This nightmare seemed more terrifying than they had expected. However what confused Ved was why they assumed the roles of such weak characters.

Shouldn’t they logically take over the roles of people who were as close to them in strength as possible?

The answer came from Manas. " It’s not exactly random, you took the roles of the only characters the dreamer remembered more clearly.

His memories of them are more vivid and naturally more suitable to housing your souls, look around you, at everybody else."

He did and noticed something he did not before. While some of these people had complete faces, they didn’t look alive.

" The dreamer can remember how they look, he remembers their voice, even if not clearly those memories are still embedded deep in his mind.

The herald can draw them out but even he cannot draw out what is not there and that is their personalities.

The dreamer didn’t know these people personally and as such have no memories of their true selves. Using a term you’ll understand, they are just NPC’s)

He nodded, when she put it like that it made more sense. The battle below continued raging on.

The more the fight continued the more terrifying the nightmare became. This was not merely a fear of zombies.

There were specific reasons why this Jonathan feared zombies and said reason was showing itself now.

One, these zombies were unkillable, not in the truest sense. Every zombie he and Naledi had killed.

Even those he had turned to ashes came back meaning he feared their immortality.

He couldn’t see an end to this horde because Jonathan’s nightmare was an endless horde that just keeps coming.

Ved sighed, this man’s nightmare might be even harder to deal with than the first one.

When he explained everything to Naledi she couldn’t help but sigh too. ’ So you’re saying the horde is endless, undying and will continuously grow stronger?’

He nodded. ’Pretty much, yes.’She sighed again. ’To borrow your thing. By Aphrodite’s underwear we are fucked.’

’Big time.’ He agreed, they made sure Jonathan couldn’t hear their conversation by using will transmission.

’ So what are we going to do?’ she asked.

’ I’m not sure yet.’ they continued watching. More rank 4 zombies appeared.

In response, more rank 4 humans appeared. However the humans couldn’t kill the zombies and their attacks were not very effective.

’ I think I might have an idea.’ she looked at him expecting him to continue. ’ This is still a dream so logically weapons made with my dream mist should still effect the zombies even if they’re immortal.’

She nodded, ’ Makes sense, should we try it.’ he looked at Jonathan.

’ Depends on him.’

She looked confused, ’ He’s the dreamer, this entire thing is constructed from his memories and fears.

Even if I create those weapons, the two of us still can’t defeat all those rank 4 zombies, not by ourselves.’

’ Okay so just give those weapons to the others.’ she said, he smiled at her.

’ If only it was so simple, if he can’t remember them using those weapons, I can’t give them those weapons.’

She frowned, ’ So it’s impossible?’ he shook his head. ’ Not necessarily, memories can be changed, it just won’t be easy, especially since the herald won’t just watch me do that, but I’m going to try.’

He approached Jonathan and grabbed his head with both hands. " What are doing?" Jonathan asked.

" Relax, I’m trying to help." Jonathan nodded though he still looked tense.

" I’ll be gone for a while, it’s up to you to protect us."

He told Naledi then his consciousness left the nightmare. He appeared above the dream island.

Below he could see the endless flood of zombies. Connected to the dream island was it source memory.

The memory and the nightmare did not exactly match. After all the nightmare was a mixture of memory and fears personally shaped by the herald.

Ved realised how it was created and it was more genius than he had ever expected. It wasn’t a single memory.

The herald took every memory Jonathan had of zombies, every trait from every zombie type.

Combined them to form a foundation for a nightmare with stronger and more terrifying zombies. The horde, a common idea for zombies, made it endless.

Near immortality, made them entirely immortal and gave them the power to adapt like World War Z zombies but much much greater.

They can adapt to attacks, however the worst of all was the zombies created from Jonathan’s most recent memory.

The walking undead of the child of winter, their trait was power, pure power. They were as physically if not more powerful than their living selves.

Of course they couldn’t use their innate abilities or vessels but that was where Jonathan’s fear came in.

He feared that the already powerful zombies could somehow use abilities like them and do it even better. ’ This damn coward.’

Ved realised most of the nightmare was made from Jonathan’s own fears, the endless horde, their immortality, their strength.

All the herald did was use his memories to create the playing field. Ved took a deep breath even though he didn’t need to breath.

He used his dream mist to try and change the memories of Jonathan. He wasn’t changing anything major.

Or it would’ve been harder, all he tried to do was create a memory of others being able to wield weapons created by Sam.

However he realised how hard it was to do that. Jonathan’s mind rejected the idea of Sam being able to forge weapons, there was not a single instance in his memories where that was possible so he needed another way.

Looking through his memories he saw there was a time when Sam disappeared for months.

Jonathan and Nancy found out he spent that time with a woman he was hiding from them, he never told them who the woman was or what they did.

Jonathan didn’t know what Sam did during that time and during the invasion of the undead, Jonathan actually fainted at some point and woke up after the battle.

He wasn’t changing anything just adding a few details where everything was blank.

What Jonathan will remember was Sam taking out powerful weapons he found and giving it to others.

Those weapons had the power to kill the immortal zombies permanently. Ved was even more grateful of his new will and dream mist upgrade.

While it came at the cost of failing to save a life, at least more good will come out of it. He was about to add the memory when he felt like he hit a wall.

No, to be specific he felt like something grabbed him preventing him from doing anything else.

" I can’t have you do that little dream walker, now can I?"
