Chapter 315: Chapter 315: Secrete Backfired

While Noah was charging his most destructive attack yet, Arachne instinctively reacted to the zombie speeding towards Noah.

Despite her initial state of terror, deep down she understood that the creature standing before her was still the person she would give the world for.

To most of the humans, not even a blur of the zombies’ movements was registered. Even amongst the strongest there, only a flicker of a streak of unnatural motion was barely visible.

But Arachne was able to track it despite its absurd speed. Her gaze traced the figure, one of a zombie who still maintained its human appearance. It was covered in dark leather gear, clothing that was torn in multiple areas that were covered in dried blood.

Its skin was completely dark, almost the same shade as its attire. With the way it moved, one wouldn’t be able to tell it was a zombie. It ran with a fluid gait. There wasn’t a hint of a lifeless drag in its stride. And to add on to the mystery, it wielded two butterfly swords in its hands, bracing them for an attack as if it was intentionally coordinating its strike.

Each sword was glowing with a black sheen on the edges of its blades.

The creature’s condition didn’t matter to Arachne. Human or zombie, she still broke into motion, not thinking about the fact that if she could keep up with the creature’s speed then Noah’s heightened vision would miss it. With Noah in the middle of such an intense attack, and with the way he was now, she couldn’t allow it to get close to strike Noah, not her Noah.

Noah was still gathering energy. The glow within his mouth seemed to be building up within his entire body as if his whole body was now a catalyst to use for the attack.

Arachne was going to slip past him, intercepting the zombie before it could get any closer.

But the moment her figure was about to pass him; a blur even faster than the zombie suddenly filled her vision.

She quickly had to brace herself, just in time before one of Noah’s spider appendages stretched out, whipping into her. An attack that sent her flying to the wall.

Following the blow, it was Fenrir who realized Noah was different. He could still smell the scent of his pack leader, but it was also mixed with something else that he didn’t like. All this time, Fenrir was in conflict with his thoughts trying to understand why his master smelled different.

It was when he saw Noah attack Arachne, the creature that he believed to always be pampered under Noah’s care, that he was convinced that Noah wasn’t his.

Fenrir was ready to pounce, his growls were overbearing, almost deranged. Not just from this imposter doing something to Noah, but also because that same creature hurt the one companion, outside Noah, whose life he valued outside his own.

His giant body was becoming seethed in flames, his muscles swelling, ready to pounce. That was until Ailetta stepped in front of the seething beast.

"Calm down Fenrir, that’s still Noah. That’s still the person who cares about us, but this isn’t our place to interfere."

"Bu-But Arachne.." Fenrir words stumbled over each other as his rage stimulated flames within each breath. His heaving breaths were much calmer than before. Not because of Ailetta’s words, but because it was her who was defending the creature that he believed was impersonating him. In Fenrir’s mind, if Noah’s mate could still believe that creature was the real Noah, even after striking one of his own, then maybe he had acted too fast.

"Noah is consumed by his rage. I know you felt it; you should still be able to feel it. Our bond with Noah is still there. What we need to do now is to let him release it all. Interfering would only direct his anger towards us. If your prey frustrated you, if they made you so angry that only killing them would satisfy you? Would you want someone else to take that satisfaction away?"

Noah never looked back when he sent Arachne flying, nor did he care about the others’ reaction. What he did was exactly what Ailetta surmised. Noah’s other half was going to make sure it enacted on Noah’s deepest urges, that was the reason for its existence, and anyone who tried to deny his existence would pay deeply, even his family.

Not once did he lose concentration in charging his attack. Even now, his body didn’t seem to react at all to the zombie that was suddenly upon him. Its swords crossed one another to form a V shape as it aimed to cut off his head.

Ding!

The swords collided with one of his spider legs, while the other three instinctively stabbed at the enemy at different angles, blocking off any means to escape.

The zombie’s speed meant nothing to Noah’s instincts, and his legs responded in sync with his subconscious. However, the moment the zombie was about to be skewered, all three of the legs phased through it. It wasn’t just its body; the swords interlocked with the lone leg also became intangible as the zombies body moved forward unimpeded.

This shocking display should’ve thwarted Noah’s attempt to still release his charging attack, yet he continued without a change in expression. It was unclear if he had complete trust in his built-in defense system, or if he just didn’t view the creature as a threat at all.

When the zombie traveled through the spears of death, its phantom-like body no longer made contact with Noah’s body; Its figure became tangible once more, right as its sword was mere centimeters away from finishing the job it started.

But again, its attack was forced to phase through. If the zombie could reason, it would be surprised by Noah’s reaction speed, and it would be even more so confused as to how Noah was able to react appropriately at all.

In the moment it phased through Noah’s attacks, the legs sent to pierce it had stopped immediately, it was as if they knew the zombie’s body couldn’t be harmed in that state. Not once did the legs even make an attempt to attack it in that state. Yet, as soon as it unphased itself, the legs were right upon it.

What was even more frightening was the fact that the legs were already aiming towards it just moments before it unphased. There was no delay as the legs adjusted themselves in mid-air.

The zombie wasn’t able to understand the implications, it could only allow itself to go through Noah’s body entirely, having to find another angle to attack.

On the other hand, Noah’s attack was nearing completion. The mana that was gathering had turned into a violet version of the sun. The creation pulled and twisted the air around it as if it had its own gravitational force. If the man-made star was even bigger, perhaps it would.

Even now, it formed cracks beneath Noah’s feet just from the intensity of the power it was radiating.

Wish!

Again, the zombie attacked, hacking towards the back of Noah’s head, just to have the same outcome. Unlike before, the zombie had tried to complete five different attacks within a few seconds, just to be held back without any conscious effort.

That was when the sun had finally spiked. And it was also when everyone understood for the first time what true power was.

______________

The people caught themselves fumbling over each other, half tempted to run away while the other half were waiting for someone to run so they could justify themselves for doing the same.

Vincent didn’t have the manpower to change the foreseeable outcome. His best man, Malcolm, didn’t have the capability to stop such an attack, nor did he have any other capable people under him who had an ability to help in this situation either. Their main enemies have been zombies and animals, not monsters who could unleash energy attacks of mass destruction.

It was now that he finally admitted that his son’s revenge would have to wait. All the effort he put into the base would have to be considered a waste; he wasn’t going to die here.

He was about to give the call, he still had a way out, but before he moved, he heard Burke talking to himself.

Or so he thought.

Burke’s lips moved low and fast, the volume of his voice was instinctive, like a practiced action that has occurred too many times, but now, Burke was too irrational to realize that Vincent was close enough to hear every word.

"Are you saying...wait that’s not possible, his parents were human, how can he be a devil? Ho-how do I know you’ll keep your promise? But....No! This isn’t what we agreed with. I’m not dead yet! This isn’t what we agr-"

Vincent narrowed his gaze when the self-muttering began to turn into a conversation.

Then he saw Burke clutch his head, his eyes looked completely horrified. And then, those same fearful unnaturally dilated eyes clung onto Vincent.

"Please! Don’t let her take my so-"

His voice abruptly stopped, the life in his eyes momentarily dimmed, but then a light began to build within his gaze. A small holy radiance that started as a small dot that gradually began to completely fill the void in his eyes.
