Belated Moonlight: He Regretted Only After I Left-Chapter 157: Actually, It Wasn’t My First Time...
Grace Quinn stormed home angrily and threw her bag onto the sofa with force.
Audrey Quinn was sitting on the sofa applying a face mask. Seeing Grace’s disposition, she frowned slightly and lifted off the mask, "What’s happened? Who’s upset our little princess now?"
"Who else could it be!" Grace flopped onto the sofa, her chest heaving with anger, "It’s that old hag from The Donovan Family!"
As if she’d found a vent, she poured out everything that happened at The Donovan Family today, especially the part about Old Mrs. Donovan suggesting Jasper Hawthorne to marry into the family, embellishing the story further.
"...Mom, don’t you think she’s too much? Asking Jasper to marry into the family! If this gets out, where would Jasper’s dignity go? How could he possibly agree?"
The more Grace spoke, the angrier she became, her eyes reddening, "What if... what if he breaks off the engagement because of this?"
She had worked so hard to get Jasper Hawthorne to agree to marry her, and now the wedding was scheduled for the end of next month...
Audrey Quinn was taken aback at first, then she chuckled silently, patting Grace’s hand, "I thought it was something major, is it just about that?"
Grace was dumbfounded, looking at her mother in confusion, "Mom? Isn’t this a big deal? Marrying into the family! How could someone as proud as Jasper Hawthorne..."
"He won’t break off the engagement."
Audrey Quinn interrupted her, speaking with certainty, "Silly daughter, what are you afraid of? Jasper Hawthorne has dirt on him that we hold, he can’t cause any trouble."
"Moreover, he’s already been with you..." Audrey Quinn smirked slightly, "A girl’s first time is the most precious, Jasper Hawthorne has taken great advantage and wants to shirk responsibility? There’s no such thing as a free lunch in the world!"
She paused, "This matter, he must agree whether he wants to or not! He can’t back out!"
Upon hearing the words "first time," Grace’s face briefly flashed with an uneasy look. She lowered her head bashfully, twisting the hem of her clothes, her voice as faint as a mosquito’s, "Mom... actually... it wasn’t my first time..."
"What?!" Audrey Quinn’s smile froze instantly, and she sat up straight, looking at her daughter in disbelief, "What did you say? You weren’t... How is that possible?"
She played the role of a vegetative person for five years, and in her memories before the coma, her daughter Grace Quinn was somewhat spoiled but had always adhered to the rules regarding relationships. She hadn’t heard of Grace having any serious boyfriends!
Grace was startled by her mother’s reaction, shrinking her neck and timidly and softly said, "It’s just... during college, I went out for a social gathering with classmates, drank too much... with a guy from the neighboring university... later I also slept with a few men... I’ve long... I’ve long not been..."
As she spoke, her voice became smaller, her cheeks flushed, it was unclear whether it was from shame or embarrassment.
Audrey Quinn pressed her lips together, "...forget it, it’s not a big deal..."
She took a deep breath, "In those circumstances, with the lights off, Jasper Hawthorne is inexperienced, what could he tell? Just insist it was your first time..."
Grace’s eyes lit up immediately upon hearing this, nodding with delighted agreement, "Mom, you’re right! He was out of it at the time, surely he couldn’t tell!"
She seemed to have resolved a major nuisance, feeling relieved, and suddenly remembered something, worriedly frowning, "By the way, mom, should I take the morning-after pill? What if... what if I get pregnant?"
"What pill!" Audrey Quinn immediately interrupted her, eyes glinting with calculating light, "Getting pregnant would be perfect! Have the baby!"
"Ah?" Grace was stunned.
Audrey Quinn held her daughter’s hand, explaining earnestly, "Grace, think about it, your current status, after all, is not completely legitimate, it’s somewhat awkward. Old Mr. Donovan’s attitude is unclear, although the old lady supports you, she ultimately can’t make the final call. But if you really could have a child, especially a boy..."
She paused, lowering her voice with an enticing tone, "At that point, even for the child, The Donovan Family must give you a status! With Jasper Hawthorne marrying in, and the child bearing the Donovan name, he becomes their heir! With a child in hand, what do you have to worry about for the rest of your life? Endless prosperity and luxury!"
The more Grace listened, the brighter her eyes became, as if she already saw herself rising to power within The Donovan Family!
"Mom! You’re right! That’s perfect! Then I need to rush, get the DNA paternity test done, and once the results are out, I can rightfully claim my status and start preparing for the wedding in grand style!"
She planned excitedly, oblivious to Audrey Quinn’s face turning pale upon hearing "DNA paternity test," blood draining away!
"What did you say?!" Audrey Quinn’s voice carried a slight tremble, "Why do a DNA test?! Hasn’t The Donovan Family already recognized you? Why do this?!"
Grace pouted and muttered, "It’s that old man from The Donovan Family insisting I do it! Saying that they need to confirm the Donovan bloodline before formally acknowledging my status! Such a hassle! Annoying! My father is Philip Donovan, who else could he be? Could he be someone else?"
Audrey Quinn quickly lowered her eyes and when she raised them again, she forced a smile, "Grace, listen to me, this DNA test, we can’t do it."
"Why?" Grace puzzledly furrowed her brow, "Doing it legitimizes my status! Otherwise that old man keeps being difficult..."
"Silly child, think about it,"
Audrey Quinn interrupted, "If The Donovan Family has already publicly recognized your status and the old lady has too, doing the test now makes us look hasty and insecure, it might make people look down on us!"
She paused, observing Grace’s expression, stoking the fire further, "In these grand families, appearances and poise are vital. The less you seem to care, the more composed you appear, the less likely they’ll despise you."
"We need to hold our ground, let them understand that we’re not here to beg, we’re rightfully here! This test should happen only when they implore, making us appear passive, as if we’re giving them face, understand?"
Grace, somewhat dizzy from her mother’s words, but "aspiring to greatness" and "being looked down upon" struck a nerve.
She hated being looked down upon!
Although she felt something was amiss, she believed her mom wouldn’t harm her, immediately agreeing, "Alright, mom, that sounds reasonable. Then... we’ll just wait for them to ask desperately!"
Audrey Quinn nodded with satisfaction, "By the way, you..."
But before she could finish, the doorbell suddenly rang...
